Tesla Model S Survey by Plug In America

Although I participate in both True Delta and Plug in America data collection they are inherently skewed. The participants self select to participate and this prevents the ability to predict the entire population accurately. People who have problems may be much more likely to volunteer their...

    100% drive unit failure rate??

The current replacements are refurbished units. The question for the future is how much Tesla or third parties will charge for refurbs. I expect there will be a standard charge regardless of the problem. The negative is cost to send the DU to and from Fremont. The positive is best refurb...

Can normal people travel in a Model S?

I thought the point of the OP was "Can normal people road trip in a Model S?" My answer to friends is that it saves time and convenience over all (home charging) but requires a mind shift back to my youth where a trip must be planned rather than just driving to a destination without thought.

    map updates!

My road is four years old now and still not on Navigon system in Tesla. The Google map updated prior to my getting the Tesla three years ago. I continue to wait for real updates as promised for Signature buyers. So many promises. I'm still happy with the car though.

[Rumor] Tesla Model S Facelift in 2016 !

As previously discussed on prior threads. Elon indicated long ago that the cycle life would be similar to BMW seven year cycle. Why would anything else happen? I see no creditable arguments other than making pieces the same between X and S. This is not something that will show on the outside...

UK to shut down all coal power stations by 2025

Not to take away from other replies, but the USA could not switch as quickly as it would overwhelm the world's ability to supply other fuel sources for electricity. Short term supply price spikes would follow. Nuclear time frame is too fast. Solar farms require too much regulation...

"BEVs are cleaner" - Union of Concerned Scientists

Thank you for this post. IMHO this is the most informed, comprehensive, and important study for our future as a species. This is from a group that originally condemned electrics, not knowing enough and then made a later study giving ammunition to Fox News which tried to show Teslas as coal...

40amp to 30amp Charging Drop Update

Thanks Flasher Z, do I need an electrician to look at it or is my dad safe as long as no further tripping of the breaker occurs?

40amp to 30amp Charging Drop Update

My charging went down from 40 to 30 amps a few times this summer at my Dad's house. I thought it was from the AC turning on. Later on a hot night the circuit breaker tripped in the middle of the night. I now charge at 27 amps and/or check charging status frequently. The plug is less than one...

Bill Gates Dismisses Free Market's Ability To Counter Climate Change

Free markets work better than all other markets, including for climate change if costs are included. Carbon tax. Carbon tax. Carbon tax. Incentives work. I support a Carbon tax because it is the purest way to mitigate Anthropomorphic Climate Change. Other ways are possible and are likely...

    Chicago owners, your opinions please

Although I have never been stuck in my RWD S while in South Bend IN(lake effect snow over 100 inches last year), I stongly recommend the D similar range as my 85P but much safer driving in winter.

    Service TPMS

The early Model S TPMS eat up the battery faster than the more recent version. The after market versions are longer lasting also. The original ones only last about 500 days.... This is part of the early bird special. Ha. I LOVE MY TESLA. Warts and all.

    Washing in Winter ?

In a closed garage, open windows of car and start the heater on max. When warm enough, close windows use war/hotish soapy water and warm clear rinse water. Four microfiber cloths folded. Wash gently a panel at a time. Start high go down. Rinse high to low. Keep leading edge of cloth consistent...

    AC

Good question but there is a heat pump rather than AC plus resistive heating when very cold. I expect the cold air felt is from the heat pump action. Moving air feels colder than it is until somewhere over 100 F.

    Those Dirty Birds!!!!

Bird dropping damage is variable. Size, acidity, time, temperature, sunlight, the bird's diet, type of bird. All these and more play into damage. Wax, clear coat, protective coatings, and ppf mitigate damage. Wash your car or quick wipe detail frequently in the future. Color of the car makes an...

    Firmware 7.0 - For Classic Model S

My sig reply to the new V7 is meah! Some improvements, some things worse, and many things randomly changed. The contrast was decreased for both screens making things difficult to see in the sun with my old eyes. 50 year old eyes require about 3x the light that 20 year old eyes require. Wow!

New York Times Article - Electric Autos Outpace Plugs - Sparks Fly

This is yet another antiTesla NY Times article thinly veiled as news. Why the animosity persists is odd. They are trying to make EV driving perilous. Unfortunately much as shootings are contagious, other types of (bad) behavior are contageous. I think that they are looking for more negatives to...

T boned by deer (graphic photo)

Yes this is comprehensive. Good that you documented. Poor deer. Lucky people to be in a Tesla. I have had several near misses with deer and my Tesla. Call Liberty Mutual early Monday to report and get the process started. It will be frustrating, just be patient and polite. Sugar typically works...

Gas car parked at a Supercharger

I believe a study should be done by Tesla to determine what works best to prevent ICEing. My observations: 1)Parking garages using green cones are never ICEd (theft of cones in open lots make this impractical ? ), 2)Green paint on the asphalt seems to work well, 3)multiple types of signs are...

Tesla at the Grand Prix du Cycling at Quebec

Tesla Model S as a support car for the only cycling major event in North America. Very environmental and no exhaust for the cyclists to breathe. Sorry about upside down.

Once you sit in a Tesla, it is hard to want anything else!

As long as the "luxury" in MB cars refers to seats, trim quality(portions), and sound deadening I could agree with criticism of the Tesla. Any criticism of the dash, center console lack, lack of buttons to press, or style is purely taste and/or rooted in history not "luxury."

Automatic Change from 40 Amp to 30 Amp charge rate

This happens when the input voltage drops a certain percent from its initial voltage when supplying more current. This is called voltage sag. For example typical household voltage will be 240 V at 1 amp of charging. If the voltage sags to 230 or so the car notices and drops the amp draw...

Model X Signature Configuration has begun!

The Model S Signature premium was about $10,000 over a similarly equipped standard Model S. The only real differences were available "white" (cream) leather and Signature Red color other than arrival time and labels.

Almost abandoned my Model S for an ICE rental last night...

I am glad that my wife still has an ICE SUV. There are many trips that I take that are not able to be done with my Model S in a timely fashion. Things continue to improve but I still need at least four times the current national number of superchargers and public destination chargers to go...

No more Tesla Model S caught on fire??

Todd is correct. The "driver" eventually died. No real fire though. Just a few of the cells smoldering and popping like fire crackers. As we now know it is a Very safe car. I hope that Tesla is able to document its safety record and publicize this to help draw more people to Tesla. Insurance...

    Hood Paint Deteriorating

I agree that it's the aerodynamics and tailgating causing the chips. If you are talking about a haze or other issue maybe the curing time. Curing time would be the entire car, not just the front end?

Buying a Tesla for all the wrong reasons?!

There is no negative stigma to the Tesla brand. Everyone realizes that although expensive your are helping to push to world to a more sustainable future. The model 3 will be great when it comes out. Buy now if you can afford it. You will NOT be disappointed.

Statistical poll of the drive unit issue

I answered the poll as written. Noise caused replacement due to perceived failure by Tesla service. Two noises. Buzz from inverter that bothered me. My new one has developed the same noise also after 22,000 miles. The second more important noise was the clunk with the lag from the drive gear...

Tesla backed my inventory P85D into a pole 5 minutes before delivery.. :(

this forum making hold out for a better tesla?

I am a "fanboy" who would suggest the Tesla Model S is an expensive car. There are other cars that are more practical, efficient, cheaper, and appropriate for income/savings levels. The S is still an early adopter car due to its limitations, cost, and foibles. It is still the best car for the...

Not the best day I've had :(

Wait AMPd, I must object. Every day I get to drive my Model S is "The Best Day Everrrrrrr!" More seriously, sorry to see the rash. I have stopped counting the contacts with curbs. Grey permanent markers until you have a chance to have a rim job.

Supercharging to reduce ownership cost of a Model S.

In California there may be concerns with using the Superchargers in cities, but in the great unpopulated Midwest I occasionally Supercharge as a form of advertising for Tesla. Otherwise people don't understand what the lonely stands are doing in the mall parking lot. Tesla uses the...

    Lack of Superchargers

I think the real cost of the standard set of eight Superchargers is more likely over $300,000. Rent for land, several electric poles and new wires from the nearest transformers, digging trenches and refilling/repairing road/parking lot, 20 years of electricity, the Tesla equipment and its...

Quandary: St. Louis to Huntsville, AL

Super Chargers all the way. I am an early adopter and find the SC routes much better than the unreliability and hassle factor otherwise. If you are extremely gregarious perhaps exploring the wilds would be more fun. Good luck. Enjoy. Don't sweat the miles.

Retractable Door Handles - Is It Practical?

My Nov 2012 delivery Model S has had multiple non-reproducible malfunctions of the handles over the years. They still put a smile on my face daily and are mentioned by half of the young women who admire the car. I prefer the light and feel (familiarity) of the originals and when the car is 25...

First Stone Chip... Tips for Touch Up Pen?

1 shake pen well 2 purge the color first onto a clean surface (cardboard) 3 use a flat toothpick to apply color 4 be ready to remove paint immediately if not satisfactory 5 repeat until satisfied. This is permanent paint. 6 Xpel Ultimate will prevent more than 9 out of 10 of the small chips.

    Model X Mule Sightings

Just to throw fuel out there, my Signature has many parts that are no longer made for the current Model S. Just saying that lack of sharing parts between the X and S doesn't mean much.

    Deal breaker therapy

An integrated aftermarket front camera can be installed and used with something other car companies use called a "switch." 360 camera action may arrive in the Model X first. Yes the iPhone interface is not elegant. You will forgive this omission when starting forward motion at intersections.

Model S Body Refresh Coming in Sept/Oct?

No refresh for many years according to Elon a few years ago. He indicated that Tesla would be similar to BMW and Mercedes with 7 or 8 year cycles. The body is still beautiful and gets compliments every day that it is clean and sunny outside. The Aluminum dyes are very expensive and took over...
