Driveguard Runflats on a Model 3

That’s just not true. Runflat tires are rated at their max operating capacity. They don’t survive being used without air, but they will get you there.

Driveguard Runflats on a Model 3

I wish I could, but I sold the car in June, 2021. The tires had 5,000 miles on them, and I never noticed much of a difference between them and the factory Michelins.

Living with the 16v LV battery

I never found an accessory that had a problem. I used a cooler, cell phone charger, air compressor, and low pressure inflator without an issue. I don’t think this is an issue in the real world.

Living with the 16v LV battery

I don’t have a pic handy, but I keep the lid off whenever it’s running. It’s a perfect fit with the load floor in place, but there’s not enough airflow for the cooler to operate. It’ll eventually error out for high condenser temp.

Living with the 16v LV battery

Mine is the F40C4TMP 23-quart cooler that I bought from Amazon. I bought it last summer, and it’s been great through repeated shopping trips, boating, and 8,500 miles of road trips. It’s had zero issues with 15.2v, and you can leave it running indefinitely if you enable Sentry to prevent the...

Model Y Charging 48 amps on a 50 amp breaker

It’s because the Wall Connector hasn’t been configured using the Wifi interface. I believe mine defaulted to the 60A setting, and it’s changed by logging into the web interface and changing the selection. You can run the commissioning procedure yourself, or just dial down the charging...

    18” wheels on model Y

Yeah, most of my winter miles are on dry roads. We had record amounts of snow last winter, so there were a couple of weeks were things were difficult, but at least 70% of those miles were on bare pavement. I couldn’t take corners quite like I do on my summer tires, but they didn’t behave...

    18” wheels on model Y

Yes, I would recommend them. They grip well in deep snow and don't seem to be wearing any faster than other sets of winter rubber that I've had. I think I have about 12,000 miles on them and still have 9/32nds tread all around. It's just fine. These tires were originally bought for my 2021...

    First Tow of the Boat!

Sorry for the late reply, I was on the road over the last couple of days. The only time I've seen it shift into park is when my door is open and my seatbelt is off. I do this sometimes when I'm backing a trailer into a tight spot. I think it will shift into park the seat sensor detects no...

    18” wheels on model Y

Mine are mounted to the set of Enkei 18x7.5s that Tire Rack sold me with the winter tire package for my Model 3. I can’t say how they’d do on wider wheels, but it can’t be far off with 8.5s. You’d probably have the same problem OEM wheels/tires do with no curb protection, though.

How much power does each USB-C port provide (2021 Model Y)

Not sure; mine is showing much higher at 13% phone SOC.

How much power does each USB-C port provide (2021 Model Y)

Which app are you using? I can try this morning on my Pixel 7 if I know which app to try.

    Roof rack disaster

No reason not to drive it. It’s not a safety issue because the crack isn’t obstructing your view of the road. You could probably drive it forever like that without a problem.
  14. TomB985

Living with the 16v LV battery

It provides ~15v to the trailer plug for the lights, and the +12v battery charging circuit is not used.

    First Tow of the Boat!

This is awesome, thanks for sharing! It amazes me how well they pull.
  16. TomB985

Living with the 16v LV battery

I’ve never seen 16v out of my outlets. My cooler reads 15.2v resting from the rear plug and 14.5 when running, which draws 45w.
  17. TomB985

Living with the 16v LV battery

Fully functional, and all of this is in the manual. One of the circuits on a typical 7-pin connector is a constantly-powered 12v circuit to charge a trailer battery. This pin is not powered in cars with the Li-Ion LV battery, but the other 6 work as usual. I tow trailers frequently with mine...

Living with the 16v LV battery

I’ve never had a problem with 12v accessories working on mine. I have an electric cooler that displays voltage, and I usually see 15.1v when the compressor isn’t running. It drops to 14.7 when it’s running, and it’s always worked just fine. I can’t find the specific product, but my...

Wall connector failed after adjusting amperage

Very interesting, thanks. I don’t see how the two can have anything to do with each other. I don’t think are any moving parts beyond the open/closed relay that connects the circuit, so the setting shouldn’t be relevant. I’ve never heard of one breaking like this, so I hope Tesla stands behind...

Wall connector failed after adjusting amperage

I haven’t heard of this before. How old is your wall connector? Are you getting a message in the web app, or an indicator light pattern on the face? Have you tried cycling the breaker to see if anything changes? I’m very curious how Tesla responds to this. This seems entirely beside the...

    Reset Learned Tire Values

I remember being able to reset the TPMS alert threshold on my Model 3 back in 2019 with a button that sounded similar to that. It allowed the car to learn a new tire pressure after accepting a warning, so I wouldn't get the TPMS alert for lower pressures. The car learned from where I had them...

    MY vs MS air conditioning?

This is a good video posted today that’s relevant to this topic. They compare the consumption difference between max A/C and completely disabling the system on a 96º day. He logged a 15% difference between the two.

Model Y 4680 stand range and Acceleration Boost?

Sure, but that one hasn’t been in production for awhile and is as rare as hen’s teeth. The worst thing is people calling it the Model Y AWD…just about all of them are AWD.
  25. TomB985

    MY vs MS air conditioning?

Maybe, but the system operates the same. It commands lots of cool air until it hits the set point and then enough cool air to hold it. If the system had to work harder to get to that point, it would t matter to the driver because it still gets there. “There” being the same 24° or 26° point...

    MY vs MS air conditioning?

That’s a good point. A good friend of mine in Texas just bought a new Model Y. He sent me this in a text message about an hour ago: I told him that I don’t think he’ll see much efficiency improvement because of how little HVAC consumes. <1 kW draw from the compressor is almost nothing...

    MY vs MS air conditioning?

I decided to indulge my nerdery and pull up the service manual. It looks like earlier Model S used R134a. Both specs are showing.
  28. TomB985

    MY vs MS air conditioning?

They probably did. Has nothing to do with the OP’s concern, though. R1234yf is relatively new, and very expensive compared to the previous R134.

    MY vs MS air conditioning?

I think you’re overthinking it, to be honest. These HVAC systems are similar to every other climate control system. It commands the system to provide sufficient cool air to get to a certain set point. I suppose it’s possible there are differences in cabin temperature probe location or...

OK to use 16V aux outlet to charge iPhone?

I’m sure it’ll be just fine. I’ve never heard of anyone frying anything out of those outlets. I use an F40C4TMP electric cooler that displays voltage, and I usually see 14.5-15.1v from the rear. I use those outlets like I do in every other cars. My 12v compressor works great with them.

Will these 5th gen Mustang Wheels fit Model Y

I got curious and did some Googling, and a thread from TMC came up. The OP never reported back, but his photo suggests they fit just fine. https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/oem-mustang-wheel-on-m3p.231732/

Tow Hitch - OEM vs Aftermarket pros/cons

If I were rear-ended, the brand of metal bar under my bumper is the last thing I would care about. The standard beam is there to manage crash forces and deform. A hitch, both factor and aftermarket, is a structural member that must withstand the forces of a trailer acting against it...
  33. TomB985

Tow Hitch - OEM vs Aftermarket pros/cons

True, but I don’t think it’s that significant. Crash structures are complicated with dozens of different parts to manage forces. The car isn’t going to disintegrate in a rear-end collision because an aftermarket chunk of metal is bolted in place of a factory part at the most-rearward part of...

    Model Y Tire Replacement

I bought a set of Überturbine takeoffs last winter, and the rears were almost worn out. The fronts looked great, though, so I just replaced the rears. 8,000 miles later, all four still look great. Hopefully, the fronts will wear out with the rears so I can swap all four to all-seasons...

    How to trick frunk sensor?

I don't have a solution, but I'd be extremely cautious about driving it like that. It's not uncommon for the secondary latch to fail on regular ICE cars when the primary latch isn't locked, which causes the hood to fly up and smash into the windshield. This happens in less than a second, and...

Tow Hitch - OEM vs Aftermarket pros/cons

This. I have the sensors, and they only give me issues with the bike rack in reverse. I sprung for the $1,300 add-on because I prefer factory harnesses without cutting and splicing, but that was it. I could care less about tow mode, and I don't like how it disables autopilot. There's no...

Will liquid spills in the trunk damage the battery?

You can't hurt the HV system with spilled water. Sorry to hear about the spill, but you should worry about mildew more than an electrical problem.

    First Tow of the Boat!

Yikes...that's nuts. Traction at the ramp can be an issue with my RWD Expedition. I should have my son shoot a video next time we go on the boat. It's predictable; when backing down the ramp, surge brakes don't work because the tongue is being extended. I usually lock the front axle as I...

    New Pirelli stock tires?

Current availability is a problem, but I think it’s great to see another OEM tire being used. Tire prices are almost exclusively a function of volume and competition. More tires from different manufacturers will push prices down in the coming months.

Can I transfer my RWD M3 2020 winter mags and tires to my new RWD MY 2023?

The wheels should fit, but the tires will be a bit short. There’s no reason they wouldn’t work, but you’ll have a 6% speedo error. You could reuse the wheels and buy taller tires. I run 235/60r18 snow tires on an 18” set of wheels I bought for my Model 3. Clearance around the rotors was...

'Plasti-dip' Gemini Wheel cover before and after

Thanks for the photos! I think they turned out pretty well. I’ve never used Plasti Dip because of some of the flakey results I’ve seen in the past. Not sure if that’s caused by time or not applying enough coats. I went the stupidly expensive route of buying a set of takeoff Überturbines...

22MYP Suspension Upgrade third party or new 23 comfort suspension?

This thread has been very helpful. A friend of mine is taking delivery today in Texas before driving up to visit. Mine was an 8/22 build, and I’m wanting to see how the new suspension compares. I might be ordering parts if I’m as impressed as some of you guys are. I’m not worried about...

    New Pirelli stock tires?

Wow, that’s quite the tear. Can you peel back the flap and snap a photo? I’m curious if the cords are exposed. I think that one will need to be replaced.
  46. TomB985

    New Pirelli stock tires?

I used to think the same, but M&S is a very different thing than the more stringent three-peak Severe Service Snow certification. The old Continental ProContact RX used on the Model Y since 2020 is an M&S tire.
  47. TomB985

Is this okay to drive on?

I’d recommend asking a shop with experienced techs who don’t stand to gain from a tire sale. Just like service centers and dealerships sell unnecessary maintenance, a tire shop has every incentive to condemn the tire to make a sale.

Is this okay to drive on?

We’re all a product of our experiences, and my opinion comes from my years as a truck driver and a short period as a tire tech. The most stringent DOT regulations on tires applies to the steer tires of commercial vehicles. These are the requirements from 49 CFR Part 396 for steer tires...

Is this okay to drive on?

The cords aren’t visible, so the tires are just fine. They would pass DOT inspection if that was a commercial tire, and I’d run those all day long. The hysteria is a bit overdone. No chances are taken by driving the tread right off of this tire. It’s just fine.
