Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Now for something really cool. Finally, a detachable racing wheel! This took quite a bit of work. The Model 3 is different because its steering wheel buttons are critical to operating the car. Computer reset, mirror angles, & steering wheel placement all happen through there. And from what I...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Custom - these guys only do it for professional racing teams; I just happened to know some people. But I'm actually doing some revisions. The first were good, but not yet perfect. If there's enough interest I could look into setting up a group buy. Maybe send a DM so I know it's worth taking...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

191 lbs. Probably over 200 with baseplates. Could have saved a chunk of weight, maybe 30-40 lbs, by just building to min requirements (e.g. one diagonal, no rear cross bracing, no gussets). But after racing long enough, you see enough wrecks and you know enough people that get hurt, and it's...

Finished product. Clean. Passes tech for SCCA, NASA, and a number of other sanctioning bodies.

Floor is extremely thin. Added extra reinforcement to the baseplate to spread the load in case of a rollover event, so the tube is less likely to puncture into the battery-

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Lots to share since my last update. Trying to decide if it'd be better to just do a full build thread or not. But for now I'll just share some highlights: Dropped battery and removed glass in prep for cage welding-

Petition Tesla to make the Model 3 Performance 0-60 <3s

Totally stock? 12v battery is probably your best bet. @MountainPass makes a kit that shaves 20+ pounds and you'll never see it under the front trunk. For 0-60 performance like in this thread I'd say aftermarket wheels, rotors, and tires. You can shave a fair amount of rotating mass.

Petition Tesla to make the Model 3 Performance 0-60 <3s

For context that was prior to the November firmware power boost. Though we were on pirelli pzero racing tires (not as good as drag tires, but better than street.) Need to run the test again when the car is put back together.

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Yeah, good point. Power loss is noticeable after 2 hot laps for me as well. Though I'm usually not starting at 100% SOC. And at 1700+ wh/mi the car gets below 75% pretty quickly, which is where power drop starts to kick in. Mountain Pass did some good dyno tests on this which you might have...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Correct, but more to it than just brackets and hats. Piston sizes have to be adjusted to match clamping force relative to the Model 3's master cylinder. I'll be using the 9660 or 9668.

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Cooling hasn't been an issue with the Model 3, which really surprised me. But I've run it hard for multiple full sessions on 100+ degree days in the high altitude desert in UT. For reference, a few years back Acura brought out a couple of their then-unreleased NSXs for testing. They blocked off...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

It's interesting, but I swear that thing has been available for preorder for like a year. We'll see if/when it is ever actually available. I'd love to switch so I can drop hinges and make fully detachable. And, will be cutting up b/c wing mounts need to be fixed to the frame. Yeah if you're...

They're the same. Essex is the only authorized distributor for AP Racing in North America, so Redwood is just reselling / dropshipping.

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Yes! So much has developed since the start of this thread. But unfortunately not in an easy-to-show-in-pictures kind of way. Some cool things to note- Working with NASA (racing)'s head office to get rules in place allowing EVs on track with traditional ICE racers. Helped convince Essex to bring...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Thought to update on a few questions- We've pulled out 453 lbs to be exact. Still need to take out the driver seat which is another ~50lbs, so that 500 lb estimate is pretty spot on. Surprisingly, weight balance is still quite good @ 51/49. Biggest discrepancy is LF, but that'll be resolved...

I'm only aware of the following options on the market today: Mountain Pass Performance - Page Mill Street (non-P3D+ front only) Mountain Pass Performance - Page Mill Track (non-P3D+ front only) Racing Brake - XT910 Racing Brake - XT970 (non-P3D+ front and rear; P3D+ front only) Unplugged...

Yeah that's a good idea. A few people have been asking about acceleration - we plan to run some data and post up another video soon.

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

We used 14-50 that day. Lots of plans for aero! That's going to play a large role in the performance of this car. Which is part of the reason why we're so excited - if it can hit these kinds of targets now, the car will really be something with a full aero package.

Apex EC-7 18x9.5 ET35 Mustang Wheels may be a good option. I don't have any affiliation with them but it seems to match what you're looking for based on the the following: Fit P3D+ calipers Clear P3D+ hub lips Under $1300 I know a few mustang owners who use them in race group, meaning they can...

For sure- will keep the forum posted. Really happy with how well it has done at this early of a stage in the build. Thanks. It is a big challenge to be sure - largely because there isn't any info out there. Our end goal is the advancement of EVs in grassroots motorsport so we'll be documenting...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

On track the car pushes an average 5-6x normal wh/mi. I estimate 35-40 minutes of total track time, which is long enough for a sprint race. (But just barely). Power graph: Another big issue is that horsepower drops as the battery state of charge falls. So by the end of the race, the car may...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Track mode takes some getting used to. Awesome for new drivers but comes at the cost of rear pads (applies brakes individually to pull the car around corners). Smooth inputs help. I will say that most street car driver aids just get in the way for experienced drivers. But this is one of the...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Yeah, the 14-50 is definitely not adequate for a 4 full HPDE sessions. But it's good enough for laying down a few fast TT laps before the tires fall off. That's next step. Need a cage to do a race seat and 6-point harness properly.

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Cool. Any luck finding the right resistance? We've tested every 0.1 increment from 1.0 to 11.9 ohms and sensors still complain. Most airbags are around 2-3 so it's a bit strange. Then again so is most everything on the car! Wow thanks! The car is a lot more competitive than people realize.

18" Apex EC-7. It's really strange when there aren't any cars around. But I love it - feels so much more connected to the road because you can hear everything happening with the tires. Pulling the windshield is just a preventative measure - so many rocks flying around it will get wrecked...

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

Door panels, windows, windshield, etc. are coming off soon! Even still we've already been able to take off 275 lbs. I suspect there's at least another 80-100 lbs between the drivers seat, carpets, glass, and other elements. First on the scales: Heavy beast but amazing corner weights...

Blew the engine. You can remove the seat. They have airbags so the car throws warnings, but still drives. Next step is to fabricate a cage so I can tie in racing harness and brace the seat properly.

Model 3 Tearing it Up at the Track

I'm building a Model 3 race car. Full build. Stripped down, roll cage, wing, etc... no holds barred. And I'm taking it into real competition. My passion is motorsport. I've been racing competitively for eight years and as soon as I drove a Tesla I knew the future would be electric. The general...
