    P100D--planning for LDU issues

It's useful to know that the coolant level is something to follow. It makes sense, but I wasn't sure how much coolant has to leak into the drive motor electronics to cause a failure.

    P100D--planning for LDU issues

The seller showed documentation that the HV battery had been replaced but nothing about the drive unit; I'll certainly look when I get the car, though.

    P100D--planning for LDU issues

I just bought a 2018 P100D on a certain car auction site; I couldn't resist at the price. It has under 20K miles, which is a mixed blessing given the reports of LDU failure happening more frequently on low-mileage cars. I'm trying to figure out the best approach with respect to the potential...

To answer my own question: after a chat with Tesla, the answer is no.

Buy from existing inventory and register in Maine?

Would picking up a car in Connecticut (destined for registration in Maine) be an option now that Tesla has opened a showroom there--on land governed by the Mohegan tribe? Tesla offers to transfer lifetime free supercharging to new vehicle

I was surprised to see this, but Tesla sent me an e-mail offering to transfer my lifetime free supercharging to a new car (S, X, or Y) if I take delivery by the end of the year. Tempting... https://www.tesla.com/support/supercharger-transfer

    New 85kWH battery for my 2013 P85+

I'm not sure what you mean by authorized and unauthorized, but I guess I should feel lucky that they replaced the drive unit at no charge, as expected (covered under the 8 year warranty, using a remanufactured part), but also didn't charge me to replace the 12V battery (I believe this is the 5th...

    New 85kWH battery for my 2013 P85+

To recap and update my saga: My car (2013 Model S with 43K miles) has been at the service center three times in the past couple of months for what seems to be the same problem, reflected in error messages "car may not restart--needs service" and then "unable to drive--voltage too low." The...

    New 85kWH battery for my 2013 P85+

The replacement battery pack was remanufactured, part # 1088815-01-B (ASY,HV BATT,S3,BB,REMAN,MDLS). My original battery charged daily to about 215 miles, although I realized that I hadn't set the charging level for years and I'm not really sure where it was set--it may have been 80% rather...

    New 85kWH battery for my 2013 P85+

My main battery pack was replaced 2 weeks ago (see post 373 above). Today, I got message "Vehicle unable to start, voltage low, service required." It was after a heavy rain, so maybe water ingress into the battery? At any rate, very annoying.

    New 85kWH battery for my 2013 P85+

I didn't, but you make a good point. Of course, they could always say that both the battery coolant heater and the HV battery were faulty.

    New 85kWH battery for my 2013 P85+

As another data point, my 2013 S85 (43K miles) is being replaced with a 1088815-01-B (ASY,HV BATT,S3,BB,REMAN,MDLS). I hope my relatively low mileage car gets a battery with an appropriate capacity (my original battery indicated 212 miles at 90%). They originally blamed my problem on the...

Crazy Things Tesla Service Has Said...

This is a bit different than the other entries here, but the tone of this text I just received from Tesla regarding my service appointment tomorrow (for which I waited 3 1/2 weeks) makes me want to buy another car. I've had my Model S since 2013, when service used to be great. Now they're...

    Drive unit or battery problem?

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at what I believe is the coolant reservoir. There is a "normal" and a "max." The level is 1 cm above the max. Although that doesn't seem optimal, I wouldn't expect it to be a major problem (but what do I know).
  16. E

    Drive unit or battery problem?

Another data point: I had the "car may not restart--service is required" error. They said it was my battery coolant heater. After replacement (at my cost--2013 Model S with 43K miles, out of warranty), the error went away for a few weeks but is now back. I set up another service appointment...

No loaners? Tesla offered me Uber during Covid!

$100 Uber credit? When I dropped off my car this morning, I was told no loaner available, but would an Uber be OK. I said I'd take the bus (I really didn't mind.) I should have taken the credit...and the bus.

Near annual replacement of 12V battery is typical according to Tesla Service Tech

I've had one replacement and I just got a warning to replace again. Under 30K miles on a 2013 S85. I suppose it makes sense that it's more about time than miles driven.

Tesla "intermittent" wipes are HORRIBLE! We need to be able to adjust in the UI

Me too, especially in a light rain. Mine let the windshield get completely covered with drops until I can't see, and I have to push the stalk button to wipe manually. I complained about it when I had it in for service (1 1/2 years ago), and they said it was functioning properly.

Is it Conceivable to Go Back to ICE After Driving a Tesla?

I'm clearly in the minority, but I like having both and going back and forth--the effortless, quiet, perhaps somewhat sterile Tesla experience, and the visceral experience of a two-seater with a V8, a manual transmission, and a throaty exhaust.

how has has your energy usage gone?

It wasn't all that cold--19 degrees. It had been outside for about 24 hours. There were days last year when it was 10 below for a high temperature. The energy usage was routinely above 1000 Wh/mi for the first 5 miles, but not as high as this--perhaps because I hadn't left it out this long...

how has has your energy usage gone?

I looked down and saw this today. It went over 1400 Wh/mi a few minutes later, but I wasn't able to take a picture. No, I wasn't driving at ludicrous speed. I was averaging about 20 mph over the 5 miles. It's just the effect of urban traffic and cold weather during a Chicago...

climate control nonresponsiveness Maybe this has been commented on, but I don't see it... Since the upgrade to 6.0, I've noticed that the climate control temperature adjustment doesn't work for about 30 seconds after turning the car on. It used to be possible to adjust the temperature...

Lost power (resolved: accidentally put car in neutral)

I wondered this as well, since I've accidentally shifted into neutral (when intending to wash the windshield in the way that it works in my Audi--it took me a few seconds to realize what had happened.)

Car keeps telling me to “Add a Wi-Fi Connection”

I get this every morning. I've never tethered, and the car is set up to connect to my home wifi. Perhaps the problem is that I live in a condo, and the car picks up maybe 10 different wifi networks from other units (or nearby buildings).

I don't think chains on summer tires are a good idea. Those tires turn into hockey pucks in the cold. The handling may be dangerous.

    A reassuring warm day.

    Firmware 5.8

5.8 has reduced my vampire losses, but at a bit of a cost. I lost 8 miles over 30 hours at about 30 degrees--much better than the 30 miles I would have lost at that temperature before 5.8. But for the first 5 miles of driving with the "battery is warming" message showing, I averaged 780...

    Rain-sensing wipers driving me nuts!

I've been complaining about this from the beginning. Service has told me my wipers work as designed--apparently they're designed to require manually pushing the button a few times a minute! The most frustrating thing to me is the inconsistency--sometimes they wipe after a few drops fall, and...

    Panoramic roof creaking noise.

I'm at 4400 miles. My creak was "fixed" about 5 months ago, which improved it but didn't eliminate it. Lately, it's been getting worse--very noticeable. Unfortunately, it appears from the above post that Tesla still doesn't have a real fix for the issue. Having said that, I'll try taking it...

    Drive-in problems (and solution)

You're correct that what I wrote is not entirely true. Having just tested this, this is the behavior: If you push the touchscreen button while in drive, you end up in neutral with the brake on. If you push the touchscreen button while in park, you end up in neutral with the brake off. So...

    Drive-in problems (and solution)

To add further info, in case this helps anyone... I went to a drive-in last night (Cascade Drive-In, West Chicago IL). The Tesla worked out great. A few notes: Putting the car in neutral with the parking brake on works fine to keep the lights off (even when a door is opened) and audio...

    My 12,500 service

Since the TSB items are warranty issues and would be taken care of for free whether you're paying for service or not, it sounds like your $600 service fee gets you tire rotation, key fob batteries, wiper blades, and a cabin filter replacement. (I know, $475 prepaid, but that's still not much...

    Drive-in problems (and solution)

Thanks for the checklist, neroden. I haven't been to the drive in yet this year, but hopefully will soon. I would add to your list: (a) turn off the dome lights, so they don't come on when the door is opened, and (b) bring a towel to cover the instrument panel and touch screen, as they put out...

Car Care: Controlled experiment - test gloss and durability of the top paint finishes

My poorly controlled experiment: Last week, I applied Glare to my other car--first working it into the paint, and then another coat applied, dried, and buffed off (as per the instructions). The result was a nice shine, but not a great look of depth. Today, I applied Glare to my Tesla--just...

    P85 Loaner Cars! Sweet!!

Should I buy pre-paid service/extended service? Or annual service every 2 years?

I also drive relatively few miles--I expect maybe 6k per year on the Tesla. I had purchased the service plan prior to the announcement, but after talking to Tesla, I'm canceling it. I plan to service the car appropriately, at 12.5k intervals. I don't see doing annual services on a low mileage...

    Annual Service Thoughts

To add more info: I called Tesla and explained my situation (expected low mileage). They told me I would be better off canceling the service contract and paying $600 every 12.5K miles--which in my case will be every two years or so. I asked about software updates, and the rep said they would...
  44. E

    Annual Service Thoughts

Yes, I thought that too. Looking at the service agreement I signed (and paid for), there is a 31-day cancellation window, although they require a notarized statement of the mileage on the car--which seems like an unnecessary hoop to jump through. I'm thinking calling Tesla to discuss that...

    Annual Service Thoughts

I prepaid the $1900, since it was said that annual service was mandatory. Now that it's not, I feel I may have wasted the money, especially since I'll probably put 6000 miles a year on the car. Maybe if they made it four services, based on mileage--i.e., every 12.5K miles, with no time...

    My charge port won't open

    Drive-in problems (and solution)

I usually go to a drive in once or twice a year, and I'd like to take the Tesla, but it looks like I won't be. I use the car audio at the drive in, so the other issue is the 17 inch screen staying on. You could cover it with a towel, but that's kind of annoying. Also, how long does the audio...
