    Hawaii - Let's Count Teslas!

I just went back home to visit my dad, and if there are 600 Teslas in Hawaii, then about 2% of them park in the HNL parking lot. I saw 4 Model Xs and probably 10 Model Ss, this was on two different days and both times there were about the same number of Teslas parking. Do they all work there...

Driving to Vegas from LA for 1st time-- a couple questions

I have the opposite reaction from your wife. I don't like to pass the same cars twice and wait behind the slow person in the fast lane going around the semis. So I would rather just drive at a slower steadier speed and not stop, but my wife and kids always have to use the bathroom at Barstow...

Early reservations are worth more than $1,000

I had a whole other thought process when it came to reserve the M3. I was thinking people were going to reserve the 2 limit just to get the points/mileage on the credit card then cancel once they get the points. You see this all the time when people buy money from the Treasury with a credit...

What is Your Monthly Maximum Minimum Solar Output

I only have a 3kW system in Southern California, but I get around 5-6 MWh a year with Enphase micro inverters. Low is usually in Nov/Dec about 150 kWh/month, high in Aug around 650 kWh. Although I have been having issues with my micro inverters lately, had to change 4 of them in the past year...

Comparing Tesla Motors Club (TMC) and Tesla Motors (TM) forums.

Thanks doug, if only you could do a tutorial on how to use this search engine. I searched for Martin, Martin Eberhard, Eberhard, etc and couldn't find him. There are already people with those user names and the search results only had one result. Either way, I just followed the Martin you...

    Working at SpaceX

I work in the aerospace industry and unless you are buying something from a US company, ITAR doesn't concern you. I'm not positive, but I think ITAR is so an aerospace (or any US company) can't sell weapons to a foreign company unless the US government says so. As for working in the aerospace...

Comparing Tesla Motors Club (TMC) and Tesla Motors (TM) forums.

I'm not sure how I got to TMC, but I haven't really looked at the TM forum unless somebody links a post to there. I do know that I came here because Martin Eberhard and his wife posted here and I was reading their posts. It was fascinating reading what he had to say back then and how he was...

After 25 years, I got stopped for no front plate

People use to always tell me how many years they have gone without a tint ticket. Not sure what was bugging him that faithful day, but I haven't put front tints on a...

Tesla's 85 kWh rating needs an asterisk (up to 81 kWh, with up to ~77 kWh usable)

So Tesla engineers knew that were size constrained, knew that the cells that they were going to get from Panasonic were already not going to give them the max capacity listed on the label when they got them, but still listed the battery size as 85 kWh. Then instead of correcting this with the...

Tesla's 85 kWh rating needs an asterisk (up to 81 kWh, with up to ~77 kWh usable)

So if Tesla pre-cycles their batteries, then why not measure the batteries then get them back up to 85 kWh? So, if the pack is measuring 81kWh, they should have designed it to hold more. If flathill is saying the powerwall has double the 7kWh, why didn't Tesla think of that for the 85kWh pack...

Tesla's 85 kWh rating needs an asterisk (up to 81 kWh, with up to ~77 kWh usable)

So are you saying that as the decreased weight, they started removing cells from the battery pack? Or that by removing some cells they started saving weight? If that's the case, then you are saying that to prove your theory somebody should just do a cell count on an early 85 pack and a later...

Tesla's 85 kWh rating needs an asterisk (up to 81 kWh, with up to ~77 kWh usable)

My 2 cents: 1Tb hard drive does not equal 1,000,000,000,000, it is 2^40 = 1,099,511,627,776. I think Tesla has said that they don't use the 18650 cells, they have Panasonic modify it a bit. Not sure if they do anything capacity wise to it, doubt it, but just throwing that out there. WK is...

Journalists Trespass, Assault Tesla employees at the Gigafactory

After placing certain things in certain places, you would think that you would put some of the glass on the seat where it should naturally go. Who breaks glass, then puts it only on the floor. Journalists Trespass, Assault Tesla employees at the Gigafactory

I also believe the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The Tesla security probably got to over zealous with their law enforcement skills, but the RGJ employees were obviously on Tesla's property. Quote from their own article:

Autopilot tries to exit at every right lane exit opportunity (SoCal)

I'm curious how AP handles left lane off ramps. Like if you are going north on the 5 in the carpool lane and want to go on the north 405, does it know how to go on the 405 carpool exit? Or the 710 north to the 5 north.

Consumer Reports gives perfect score to Model S P85D

Maybe it's just because this is so subjective. The gave the P85 a 99/100 score, so if the P85D is better, the only rating they can give would be 100 or better. It's like the dunk contest or the Olympics, once you give somebody a "10" and there is a better performance, there really isn't a...
