Are you sure? You can only really see it if you watch from an awkward angle as the trunk closes, or you close it manually so it stops half way and you can inspect. Typically no-one would ever see it was happening during normal motorized usage, but they would see the damage if it happened.

That seems totally crazy - no way I would do this. I think (as mentioned below and shown on some videos) it should be possible to install the foot sensor inside the bumper and reasonably easily *except* having to remove the bumper during install

My guess is that the relates to the older way of using CANBUS which required tapping into wires, and isn't valid any more since these days both products use a plug into the CANBUS below the back row A/C vents now.
