Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Yup. My car is now famous. That’s more than most here can say! Honestly, I was underwhelmed with how hard they had to hit it to get it off. I was prepared to see much scarier footage. Agreed. Bearings and alignment are all good. No issues with the car. The wheels are TBD. Bringing them to a...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

The wheels are off! In truly anticlimactic fashion, I found a shop who works on heavy duty trucks who was willing to give it a shot. He said he used a 14 lb 4-foot sledge and had them off in 20 minutes… This is the exact tool the other shops used for hours with no luck. My running theory at...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

They are not! Due to the holiday, I’ve been unable to spend time, but I’m out of ideas and energy. I’m dropping it at a shop next week who says they’re willing to spend some time trying, but if they’re not able I’ll ask them to cut them off. If they don’t want to be responsible, I’ll be buying...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

This is my likely next step. I'm at a standstill due to the holiday, but will enjoy the mental break from this damn car for a week. I am scheduled for a shop to give it a shot towards the end of the month, but if that doesn't work, someone will likely be cutting at least 1 wheel off. My two...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Funny you should say that! This is exactly what I did this evening in a large empty parking lot with one wheel. I tried slowly moving the car with the lugs loose many times, but that didn’t work, so I stepped it up. Rapidly swerving back and forth going up to 30mph and corners going ~20. Even...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Still no luck at this point. Trying to find a shop who is willing to spend some time and maybe get creative. The manufacturer was of no use, whatsoever. Bad timing with the holiday coming up as I won’t be able to keep working on it next week. Hopefully I can make some progress this week 🤞

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

I have no other reference as to how hard wheels "should" be, but someone has mentioned that the fast wheels are quite soft. I can definitely support this as I have definitely dented the wheel in a bunch of different fun ways at this point and it doesn't seem to hold up very well against steel...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

^ this. and since my wheels are sitting flush to the hub hat (or at the very least more flush than 3mm), it proves the likely scenario that the wheel has deformed since the steel hub shouldn't have been deformed by the aluminum wheel. The assumption is that the deformation of the wheel happened...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

A week ago I thought "surely someone has done this before," but at this point, I'm pretty confident I am the only person to have done this. I think 1mm larger and they wouldn't fit. 1mm smaller and they wouldn't be stuck. I wish the manufacturer made that decision.... The dealer gave me some...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Yup, tried driving a bit, but haven't gone too crazy. This is another front-runner for next attempts. Even tried driving with the referenced gear puller engaged and it just bent the steel backing plate I was using to get a grip on the wheel....

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Yup - have not tried this yet, but it has been recommended a couple of times. Definitely in the running for my next attempt.

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Agreed. I'm far from an engineer, but the only thing I could imagine is that the lip on the P hub is significantly stronger than the aluminum wheel, so wheel I applied 129 ft/lb of torque on the lugs, since the wheels didn't have the small alteration to the bore to account for the lip, it...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

I would agree, but at this point, I've had 3 different professional shops + myself + a lot of hours and everyone has said the exact same thing of "huh never seen this before. I've always been able to hammer the wheel off." I'm at a loss, but I'm obviously going to keep trying! This may be my...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Ya that’s my thought about the pry bar. I could maybe squeeze one in there, but the amount of force I’ve applied with BFH and the gear puller is almost certainly more than the small pry bar. I also don’t want to damage the hat. It can wiggle on all axes. I hadn’t thought about the studs being...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Yup I tried more heat today and got no more movement. Did it simultaneously with the gear puller with a ton of force that bent the steel plates I was using for grip on the claws and still only have ~2mm of wiggle. I’ve been using a handheld propane torch and it’s impossible to apply the heat...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Eek quite the before and after photos. I think there is a chance the aluminum wheels deformed and that’s the reason why I can’t get them off. I’ll definitely post photos if I can get one wheel off, but still nothing at this point.

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

This is the one thing I’m not concerned about even in the slightest. There is nothing unsafe at this point with these wheels on the car. I am fairly confident I could take all the lug nuts off this car and drive on the highway and the wheels wouldn’t budge

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

I agree that some metal has deformed and I’m trying to brute force it off. I also generally agree with the sentiment that if it wiggles then it came come off, but at this point I have tried sledge hammers, crowbars, the gear puller with a 6 foot breaker and the wheel is not coming off. Last...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

A blowtorch seemed to work the best so far. I’m getting 2-3mm of wiggle at this point, which is the most I’ve seen. Now I’m going nuts trying to figure why I can get this movement but it won’t come off. It seems like enough movement where it should pop off, but nothing.

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Yup sounds about right. I’m at 10 hours invested at this point and have nothing to show for it. Already had 3 shops try and say sorry no luck. Had 10 others say no way I’ll try

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

I’ve considered attaching straps to another vehicle and trying to pull. I’m confident at this point that it would just drag the car off the jack. Something has caused it to completely attach. I would say corrosion and winter is possible, but the car has been driven ~50 miles in this condition...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Tried loading into a wedge. Tried the gear puller. The wheel doesn’t allow for the best gripping on all 3 hooks, but I got it to grab and cranked an ungodly amount of force and nothing. I have about a mm of space generated, but no matter what or how many times I do it, it just won’t wiggle off...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Attaching photos. The wheels are sitting flush to the hat. With a heat gun and some elbow grease I got about a mm of wiggle, but the wheel still won’t come off.

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Yup they’re all stuck. Maybe there something I’m missing they isn’t the lip or the center bore, but no clue

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Baffling to me, too, but the wheel manufacturer said the wheels shouldn’t be used on a performance model 3 because the hub bore is incorrect on those wheels. Haven’t totally solved why, but I think it has something to do with the little 1-3mm lip that is on the performance hub that isn’t on the LR.

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Thanks for all of your ideas. I definitely like the idea of the gear puller. I’m not sure the wheels will have best spot to place those hooks, and I’m concerned that the hooks are just going to eat through the rim with them touching such a small surface area of the wheel, though.

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

My comments about the hub bore diameter being the issue is from the wheel manufacturer who said their performance wheels have a “slightly altered hub bore” and then pulling the specs off their website. The only other difference is the offset of 35mm on the P wheels and 40mm on the others...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

I’m not super knowledgeable (clearly) about those specifics. But in terms of mounting these wheels, they went in perfectly fine. Slipped them on to the bolts and hand threaded the lugs an estimated 7-10 rotations before they were snug. Then used the torque wrench for the remaining rotations...

Mounted wrong size wheels - they’re now permanently stuck to the car. Disaster [resolved]

Holy *sugar* am I an idiot. Had a set of fast wheels EV01 with winter tires for my 2020 M3LR. Bought a 2022 M3P. Quickly looked at the website for the wheels I own and they advertise as fitting all variants of model 3. Perfect. Winter comes along so I throw the wheels on the car and take off the...

    Aftermarket Wheels on Model 3

Ordered the Fastwheels EV01+. Excited for an alternative to the aero in terms of efficiency, but with better styling (IMO). Curious if anyone else has them
