Review: Hankook iON evo AS vs Pirelli AS+ Elect vs Michelin PS 4S vs Michelin PS AS 4

Man, I really wish we had those labels here in the states... I seem to recall at least an efficiency rating being developed a long time ago, but was canned for some reason...

FSD v12.x (end to end AI)

Used 12.3 for a bit on my commute this morning with the new auto speed feature enabled and "normal" driving aggressiveness. Some behavior is the same, but some is new. Lane centering behavior is very worrying on my main route, which is a 2-lane 50-55 mph highway with erratic lane markings for...

    EV and Battery Credits

LOL! It still amazes me that Toyota is so backwards after the success of the Prius which mistakenly caused all to think that they were going to lead the race to zero-emissions vehicles. EVs still have some shortcomings driven mainly by the cost of batteries, but as costs continue to fall and...

Model 3 SR+ LFP Battery Range, Degradation, etc Discussion

How does that happen during a tire rotation? I mean, they will usually check the tire pressure, but to mess with the valve cores seems really strange to me.

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

It's pretty clear that if you are encountering an ever-increasing amount of FUD, you definitely need advertising to get the word out. Otherwise all you have are the falsehoods which fly about unchallenged.

Tesla Energy and utility scale projects

Yeah, the "DC-coupled battery expansion units" is interesting. I wonder when that will be available and how much it will cost to add an additional unit down the road. 11.5 kW of continuous power is enough for most homes unless you're charging an EV at high power, but if you're off-grid you're...

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

Way off topic, but you're right. Based on the most recent data I could quickly find, Steve Gordon, DMV Director (equivalent of CEO) was paid around $190k back in 2019. Probably getting more than that now, but almost certainly no where near what the CEO of PG&E (not to mention SCE and...

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

Back on topic - I have a question: I currently have a smaller PV system under NEM1.0. I submitted the plans/paperwork to my utility before the deadline last year to upgrade the system under NEM2.0. I would like to add batteries to my house, which I did not include at the time as I was in a...

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

I disagree. Aggressive plans to spend money on the transmission system is exactly how they raise rates and thus raise profits. You are taking my quote out of context - the utility gets fixed profit margins in exchange for a monopoly, so they can't change their profit margins. If PG&E spends $1...

    CPUC NEM 3.0 discussion

Like any organization, they should be focused on doing things more efficiently and getting more work done by spending less money. Beating a dead horse, but when your profit is dictated by how much you spend without any real guardrails on how efficiently you do it, you end up with a bloated mess...

Hankook new iON tire, an "EV" tire (not the same as Kinergy GT)

Front/side winds are up there, too. Combine that with water on the roads, and it's horrible! Driving on the freeway yesterday from NorCal to SoCal and efficiency was 350 Wh/mi at the best and at times over 400 Wh/mi (granted, this was on CrossClimate 2s, not iON EVO AS).
  19. D

Review: Hankook iON evo AS vs Pirelli AS+ Elect vs Michelin PS 4S vs Michelin PS AS 4

I think you got it backwards - the CrossClimate 2s, despite having a triple-peak snow rating and performing very well in the snow, are extremely long wearing tires. Their biggest downside to the CC2 is the efficiency (which sucks compared to the MXM4 and Ion Evos). But I also would expect them...

Hankook new iON tire, an "EV" tire (not the same as Kinergy GT)

I'm impressed with how efficient the recent RWD vehicles are - my 2018 LR RWD is typically 10% worse than your on MXM4s (around 250 Wh/mi) and < 200 Wh/mi on the freeway is unheard of. With Crossclimate 2s is around 10% worse than MXM4s. Can't wait until I need new tires and try out the iON EVO AS.

To me, I would have to guess they are doing magic dock upgrades. That's the only reason they'd have a table out with some power tools, so they can modify the posts to retrofit the magic dock. Regular maintenance wouldn't not likely require a big team, most of the time for regular maintenance...

    Coronavirus

Where do you get a test like that? Or is it just photoshop? I've had a nasty flu/COVID-like bug the last week and am on the mend with a lingering cough and stuffiness. It doesn't appear to be COVID (tested 3 days into it, negative). I did get a flu-shot as well this season. For some reason...

    Most efficient tire?

I'm only estimating, so either way. As I suggested, it's at least 10% worse for me. The difference seems to be bigger at higher speeds, probably because the tread is so chunky. They do grip well in the rain and snow, though. Only limited time in the snow and I don't have much else to compare...

Rear Axle Click: Ultimate DIY Fix

This seems to be a more common issue on EVs because of regenerative braking - my '11 Nissan LEAF did this quite noticeably after a few years (never did get around to greasing the axle splines) and now my '18 Model 3 is doing it (not quite annoying enough to fix, yet). For $66, I would probably...

Prediction: Coal has fallen. Nuclear is next then Oil.

That would be about what I'd expect, given that the capacity factor of utility scale solar is usually around 25%, so a 4-1 ratio between solar/coal makes sense. Next add batteries!

    Coronavirus

Yeah, having had COVID once, it was bad enough that I want to reduce the risk of getting it and long-COVID risk still appears to be real. What should my ideal charge percentage be?

Then don't do it? The reality is that you get maximum range when you want it with a bit of battery tending. For my use, it causes basically no extra hassle, here's what I do: Set max charge to 55% Set preferred charge start time to utilize off-peak electricity rates Plug the car back in when...

Discussion: Model 3 and Y price drop Jan 2023 / April 2023 / Oct 2023 and All other Pricing Speculation going forward

Not totally surprising, up until the last week of the quarter, discounts on inventory cars of $2-4k was pretty readily available. Now with the FSD transfer promotion over, I wouldn't be surprised to see that they either need to reinstate that or drop prices further.

Model 3 SR+ LFP Battery Range, Degradation, etc Discussion

Really nice charts! Can I suggest a couple enhancements? 1. Color code the lines by miles/month using some sort of hot-cold gradient. Would be harder to tell cars apart, but would make it easier to tell which lines have more miles than others. 2. Add an average line to the chart. Should make...
