    Model 3 Freak Out

The short answer is that 'firmware' is a broad term. As the name implies, it covers a grey area between hardware and software, but not all firmware is created equal. Some are much 'firmer' than others. For example, on your PC, a lot of the 'firmware' is like the driver for your video card...

Dual Motor no longer offers range choice

Think of this from an engineering & production point of view. The original plan was premium RWD car first. Then offer smaller battery, then AWD with either battery. Clearly the battery option and dual motor option are separate, and can be developed in parallel. 2 years ago, they...

Reuters: Tesla Reduced Model 3 Parts Order Due to Bottlenecks

The way they could delay US deliveries w/o taking a cash hit would be to deliver more cars overseas in the last quarter.

A modest proposal: remote steering to optimize charger utilization

I realize the current software doesn't support it, but the charge lock is under SW control, right? Also, at least for cars with autopilot, the accelerator, brakes and steering are also under SW control, right? So, in principle, it should be possible to write an app to do this. I realize there...

A modest proposal: remote steering to optimize charger utilization

Well, the problem exists because at least some owners want the freedom to plug in and walk away. They would like to return at a time dictated by their schedule, not the car's charging time. Fining them for returning late does encourage them to come back sooner, but it doesn't give them want...

A modest proposal: remote steering to optimize charger utilization

I'm a M3 reservation holder. I've driven but don't own a Model S. I was thinking about the problem of charger hogs, both at destination and superchargers. (where someone plugs in and wanders off longer than the car needs to charge up) The current solution is to simply fine the people who do...

Could 1 Pedal Driving lead to 'Unintended Acceleration' incidents?

There have been several cases on unintended acceleration reported. In each case it occurred in a setting where the driver could reasonably be expected to step on the brake but the logs show the Go pedal was floored instead. Tesla concludes that it's operator error and they aren't liable or...

    Wiki Model 3 Reservation Tally

Try adding a linear term and this latest data point. I have fewer observations than you did, but could still justify it in terms of reducing chi^2/DOF. 10.66k/day is a good starting guess on the linear term. Here it is hacked up in Excel. X-axis is days, Y is reservation in thousands...

[Speculation] Second-hand report of ball joint broken after parking

This failure could be from abuse (the pot hole from hell) or it could be any number of manufacturing or assembly errors: Steel not living up to the design spec, due to using the wrong material or improper heat treating... Or it could be as simple as some clown over tightening the nut. If the...

    Salvage Car Owners Support Group.

Those are almost certainly standard purchased parts. Do they have any part numbers or other identifications on them? They are also dirt cheap OEM parts, so you can afford to take a guess and then see if it works. Google "Monroe Mounting and Length Specifications" You'll get a PDF with all...

Nope. I've been told by a reputable source(*) that there is a pyrotechnic fuse in the battery which gets blown if the airbags go off. This part is apparently *NOT* easy to source or replace. (*) A retired engineer with 2 Rav 4s, a T-Zero, a Sig S and a Sig X. (He's been an EV advocate since...

That would be the blind leading the blind.... but we can try to sort it out together. Mike K is way ahead of me, and has been very helpful sharing his experience. BTR_FTW is boldly forging ahead with what is probably the *last* car I would ever consider standing next to, much less...

    Salvage Car Owners Support Group.

I'd like to get a Model S that is safe, runs well, and I don't have to worry about scratching, because it's already been totaled... (something I could throw scuba tanks in without feeling guilty :-) Not looking at starting any herculean projects. Not particularly looking to make money, but...

    Salvage Car Owners Support Group.

Mike, Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. Did you try visiting several Service Centers to see if this was really Tesla policy, or if maybe you just met one little emperor with an attitude problem? Also, what time frame was this? It's possible in the early days the SCs just didn't have...

    Repairing a Flooded Tesla Model S : HOW-TO

As a retired systems engineer, with a fair amount of experience collaborating with our "Field Circus" engineers, can I offer some tips? (a barter, really, since I'm considering getting a salvage car as well) On the electrical, stuff, start by isolating things. Remove all the fuses & fusible...

    Salvage Car Owners Support Group.

Someone once said you can have too much free time or too much free money, but never both. I'm in the free time camp, and thinking of buying a salvage car and fixing it up for my own enjoyment. I've read horror stories about Tesla not being salvage car friendly, but they seem to be rather...

    Live stream of event?

Reno Gazette promised live coverage, but so far it's crickets.... See Tesla Model X launching Tuesday, RGJ reporting live from event There is an event going on, but it's much smaller and lower key than the "D" unveil they had last fall. A friend with a Model S was able to get me into that...

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2013

What is the definition of a bottom? It's not when people are calling it... that is the sound of people in denial and just hoping the slide will stop. The bottom occurs when the largest percentage of people truly believes the stock will keep falling. Just as the peak occurred when the...

    Ugh. Another Model S fire - 2013-11-06

If that was a pushed in fender, I would expect the tail light assembly to be cracked, dislocated, or otherwise damaged. I don't see that. It's possible we are seeing the reflection of a road sign or something which is dark against a light sky from that angle.
