This just turns off the notification and the annoying '1' badge on the Tesla app, not the capability to use the phone as a key. You can still unlock and do all the phone magic tricks.

I was as surprised as you, but he said it was fairly standard to do that now. He used some kind of clamp contact to tap off the meter tails which must make an electrical connection without the person doing it making contact themselves. All very neat.
