    400A main panel recommendations?

Just wanted to give one last shout out to @Vines and @wwhitney to close out the thread. Thanks to both for your amazing help to get me from my initial misguided plan to something actually workable!

    400A main panel recommendations?

So the plan is still good in either backup switch or GW2 scenarios, right?

    400A main panel recommendations?

Ok, but all my loads are already in a subpanel, would I need to move them to the main panel if I got the backup switch?

    400A main panel recommendations?

Hm, why is that? With a backup switch are those loads also non-backup?

    400A main panel recommendations?

Excellent, I like this plan. Last question (well, probably not the last, but one can hope): If we end up going with a Backup Switch (that piggybacks on the meter socket), does this setup accommodate that as well?

    400A main panel recommendations?

It's almost as if I don't know what I'm talking about... I'm certainly ok with that. Nor do I mind paying more for a meter breaker only panel like the CQRA200 Wayne pointed to. I just want to do things right. To recap: Stick with the SC816F200PS chosen by my electrician, put a HOM2200BB on the...

    400A main panel recommendations?

Agreed! I don't care about the cost. Well, within reason, of course, but a few hundred bucks is fine by me. I also see it as an "insurance" cost. I'd much rather pay a bit more now and never need it, than save a few bucks and regret it later.

    400A main panel recommendations?

Yeah, the SC12L200S is ~$300 more than the SC816F200PS even though it has no distribution, though I'm not sure if it's really an apples to apples comparison otherwise. But price isn't my top priority anyway here. I'll ask my electrician if he can put in a no distribution panel instead and see...

    400A main panel recommendations?

Is that good or just complicate things? What's the advantage of a no distribution panel? I'm happy to push on my electrician to choose something else, but I don't like to do that to an expert unless I have a good reason... Would this SC12L200S be the equivalent no distribution panel? It's...

    400A main panel recommendations?

Gas riser is 30+ feet away from the MSP, so good there. My electrician is recommending the SquareD SC816F200PS -- Does this look reasonable? I'm not 100% sure this is a "no distribution" panel or not as recommended by Wayne above. I'm guessing it is a distribution panel since it says it has...

    400A main panel recommendations?

And here I thought I was clever for wanting a 400A panel... Should the meter/main have a 225A busbar as well? Any specific recommendations for the meter/main that would allow for ? Something like this? Eaton 200 Amp BR Type Main Breaker Meter Breaker (without Distribution EUSERC) MBEB200BTS -...

    400A main panel recommendations?

Thanks, all, for your input. As usual, it's clear to me that I'm missing a lot of information even though I've been looking into this for a while. This is one of those things that drives me crazy as I'm sure there's a good way to do this that would keep things as future proof as possible but...

    400A main panel recommendations?

I’m getting my service upgraded to 200A and was thinking I should get a solar ready panel with a 400A busbar to futureproof against the 120% rule (as I’d have a 200A main breaker, so that would give plenty of capacity for the PV). Also would like it have “room” on the line side between the...

    Minimum service amps required?

Thanks, all, for the input. As an update, after seeing your replies, talking to a few more experts and reading a whole lot more, I'm going to bite the bullet and get the 200A. A conservative load calculation (including potential future gas->electric upgrade and house expansion) puts us at 32kw...

    Minimum service amps required?

Thanks, Ampster. So you have 100A service, 100-125A main breaker and a 200A bus bar? Is your total house load >100A? The other thing I'm trying to figure out is if per code I'm going to be required to upgrade my service anyhow. My calculated total house load will be >100A and CEC 220.40 says...

    Minimum service amps required?

I'm remodeling and it turns out that PG&E is going to want $26k to upgrade my service from 100A to 200A. I'm wondering whether instead of doing that I could get solar + batteries, but I'm getting conflicting information on whether that's possible. My GC says that 200A service is required for...
