Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

The Tesla ECM puts out a 1Khz 16 v signal as measured by oscilloscope. I am curious to know how you confirmed that the dampers are fully soft with 0 current.

I’ve started a petition to show Tesla the breadth of this issue. If you’ve got a problem with your suspension, sign it! The petition will go to Tesla executives. Also, send a link to the petition to everyone you know who owns a Model S or X. Be a part of the effort to get this problem...

    Show of hands… Adaptive Suspension

I really don’t know what the Tesla system is capable of, but the problem is that they haven’t even tried yet! NONE of the physical settings they are using open the valves enough to soften the ride. Please see the thread “Physical measurements of variable suspension show that you’re NOT getting...

Physical measurements of Variable Suspension show that you’re NOT getting the ride you call for.

The recording oscilloscope is a good idea! Do you have such an instrument? If so, it would be great if you could take the readings. I suppose one could also just video the scope while driving the same route in each ride mode. I would sure welcome the input. I won’t be able to do much more...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

This has been done. Read sub-thread 6 of this thread. They found that their cars were identical. The most current thinking on this subject is found in the thread “Physical measurements of variable ride control show that you’re NOT getting the ride you call for “. Everyone should move over to...

Physical measurements of Variable Suspension show that you’re NOT getting the ride you call for.

I’m retired (that’s how I can waste all this time on this issue!). I did coding/systems analysis… mostly for the manufacturing industry. I am an electronic hobbyist and have always worked on/restored cars non-professionally. (When I got my first car I immediately disassembled it).

Physical measurements of Variable Suspension show that you’re NOT getting the ride you call for.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments! Your concerns are valid. I think I did address most of them in the video though. The problem is that I was trying to minimize the length of the video so a lot of information comes at you pretty fast. (You almost have to watch it twice to catch everything!)...

Physical measurements of Variable Suspension show that you’re NOT getting the ride you call for.

It turns out that “Sport“ is the only Variable Suspension mode that actually delivers what you call for. All other ride modes are virtually the same, forcing the shocks to their stiffest possible setting. Watch this video to see physical measurements of the actual shock settings that result...

    Show of hands… Adaptive Suspension

Hi guys! Sorry… I’ve been a little distracted for the last few months. But, in that time, I’ve refined my thinking and produced a new video detailing the problem. First, I have to comment on Doug’s feeling that only early MS refresh cars are affected. This is a SOFTWARE issue. Early cars...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

When you get together, please try the old “shade tree mechanic’s” shock test: one of you sit in the car and activate the suspension, while the other simply bounces the fender up and down. This should give you a good “feel” for the damping rate. A low damping % will be noticeably easier to push...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

So… if lower % means less damping, (ie. Softer) why does the % INCREASE when you encounter rough pavement?

Read the thread Plaid Suspension Accelerometer Test Readings in Comfort and Sport Modes. You’ll find it nearby. Notice that “sport“ is softer than “comfort“.

Would you please tell us the model, delivery date, and suspension data numbers for your car? (Read how in one of my posts above). I’m especially interested in knowing the numbers of a car that works. Thanks!

Where did you get this manual? Everyone associated with Tesla has been so tight lipped about ANYTHING to do with how the thing works that I’m amazed to see an actual repair manual. Too bad that this isn’t my problem. I’ve personally checked the continuity of my wiring and Service’s diagnostic...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

….. an update on what I’ve been doing. Since Tesla apparently isn’t interested in hearing from their customers, it occurred to me that they might listen to a suspension expert. After a little asking around in the suspension industry, I learned that Tesla’s air spring/struts are made by...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

We’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one Callllvin. It’s just that when I can measure something and quantify it, it takes on a degree of factualness.

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

By actual measurements, Sport is the softest setting you have. It starts at 28% softness vs. 0% for Comfort.

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

My main thrust in this whole issue has been to shift the discussion from a subjective to an objective one. With this in mind, I have tried to document the provable facts about the system’s operation. I am sorry if I have given a different impression, but I try to explain the difference between...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

Good thought! But I can determine which wire is the ground with the o-scope. The duty cycle is as stated and agrees with the % posted on the Suspension Info screen.

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

You don’t need any equipment! As I explained in my post, the values displayed as “percentage damping“ are NOT percentage damping but ARE solenoid voltage duty cycle. They are a direct window to the operation of the valves. Getting the numbers I need takes about one minute…. Go to the...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

I agree with you regarding the damping... ie. Higher % is stiffer. The problem is, the numbers presented here are NOT damping! Think about it… 0% damping, as many of the settings read, is not possible unless the damper is missing! The numbers are actually the duty cycle of the voltage applied...

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

Thanks for your help! The twitching of the numbers is the result of the system continuously reading the analog pulse width and converting it to a percentage to display on the screen. Analog electronics always involves slight moment to moment variations.

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

Look again at the first post in this thread. The numbers are on the “suspension info“ screen. It tells you which ones and how to record them. That is, if your Raven had such a screen.

Adaptive Suspension Damping… Real or Ruse? Which one do you have? Find out fast!

You’re right Dave.. the values aren’t static… that’s the “Adaptive“ part of Adaptive Suspension Damping working. This system starts with a “base comfort percentage“ and ADDS to it as the road gets rougher. That part of the system works fine. I’ve monitored it on the oscilloscope while...

Many new Model S owners are unhappy with the adjustable ride control in their cars. They feel no difference between Comfort and Sport. Others THINK that their systems are working… but can you be sure?… the “placebo effect“ is strong. When you select “Comfort“, it’s easy to convince yourself...

Maaz: it sounds like you have a “working“ Adjustable Ride Comfort system in your ’22 Plaid.… unlike my ‘22 LR. I’m trying to work out a fix for this issue. To do this I need to know what the “suspension info“ screen reads on a “good“ system. I will be eternally grateful if you would look at...

It sure would! Unfortunately I haven’t been able to do it. I tried to schedule a test ride in a new Model S, but none are available now. Even so, while I would love to experience variable ride modes for myself, I agree with tm1v2 (above)… if you have to ask yourself if it’s working, it ain’t...
