MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

One more quesiton ... not sure if the low DC on yoiur car is 12v, or higher. If higher, what inverter have you found that can handle 16vdc (or whatever) input voltage ?
  2. R

MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

So you're using the inverter output, for work, while driving ? Interesting.

MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

Thanks for sharing. A couple questions ... Why did you feel this pre-charge module was needed, rather than the "sparkless" connectors mentioned above (XT90AS, or Protek RC SQ8) ? The idea is to slowly charge the caps on the inverter's DC input, so there's not a sudden current draw on the...

MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

I did almost this very thing. I used an interlock (instead of a transfer switch, which my AHJ does not require) which bolts to the load center cover and prevents the main breaker and breaker for the generator inlet jack from both being on at the same time. Since my inverter is only 120vac, I...

Squeaking from inside cabin help please.

I have a squeak that clearly is coming from somewhere below the computer screen. Noticeable going over any bumps. Simply pushing down firmly below there (on the area where you can place your phone to wirelessly charge) makes it go away. Any fixes ? Any luck with warranty service ?

Tire Rotation [recommendations on where to get tires rotated?]

    Don't think I'm going to, but maybe. Don't buy their argument though. I'm a different kind of engineer than mechanical, but I believe the following is right. The equation for maximum deflection of a simply-supported beam is: [W(lb) * P(in)^3] / [48 * E(lb/in^2) * I(in^4)]. I used W = 2250...

Tire Rotation [recommendations on where to get tires rotated?]

Well, if you're satisfied with front-back rotation, and not afraid to lift an entire side of the car from one jack point, a single platform jack (and nothing else) will suffice. That's what I just did. Looks to me like the rear jack point is closer to the center-of-gravity than the front...

If they are non-directional, you can do a cross rotation. Not that you HAVE to.

You have you two platform jacks ? I have one, plus an emergency scissors jack. Wouldn't want to use the latter unless I had too.

Tire Rotation [recommendations on where to get tires rotated?]

Good grief, $300+ ?!? I'll just make my own, thanks you. 1. Piece of steel from the scrapyard. 2. Mount a couple of these on it: Mike 500 Jacking SOCKET ADAPTER for scissors jack to TESLA MODELs 3, Y, S and X | eBay 3. Maybe bolt something to the middle to insure against it slipping...

Tire Rotation [recommendations on where to get tires rotated?]

No foolin' ? For glass-roofed cars ? No, spending very little; just a piece of steel from the scrapyard, or the piece I already have. Glass roof IS a lot of money. I guess there's a risk the car could slip off the rig I'm proposing.

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

@Mike500 I posted an idea of mine at another thread (post#44 at Tire Rotation [recommendations on where to get tires rotated?]) because it seems like that's where it belongs. But you seem like a smart and curious engineering type. I'd be curious what you think of my idea.

Tire Rotation [recommendations on where to get tires rotated?]

I'd like to be able to rotate my own tires. I have a nice platform jack, and apparently you can jack up an entire side of the car (I haven't tried it yet). If you just do front<->back rotation, you're all set. But I've heard it suggested that lifting both wheels off the ground, from one of...

Not so free if they jack the car without using the pucks, damaging the traction battery. Or if they torque the lugnuts improperly and warp your rotors.

    TeslaTags (MP3/FLAC Retagger for Windows)

TeslaTunes doesn't actually work, and the developer seems to have dropped the ball.
  19. R

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

Small point of order: Amazon calls this 13/16", but a 13/16" wrench won't actually fit on it. Which is ok, because 13/16" won't fit the Tesla lugnuts either, so you need to carry a 21 mm lug wrench anyhow. (Because 13/16" is actually 20.64 mm).

Lord, so much stuff to buy - to be prepared for a flat. Ah well, thanks for the excellent suggestions, just bought 'em both.

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

I thought I'd heard it wasn't a good idea to jack the car so high that both wheels (on one side) came off the ground - on account of torsional forces on the car body cracking the glass roof. A non-issue ? I hope it's ok, because as difficult as the scissors jack is, I'd love to be able to...

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

Man, this car is HARD to jack up - using that red Torin scissors jack (with Mike's adapter) - but I don't imagine any other scissors jack would be much easier. Does make me wish it had a hex drive, so could use a rachet wrench (instead of that awkward hinged handle with a hook on the end)...

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

Since I don't have Ryobi stuff, that's gonna be real expensive (unless Dewalt batteries will work). Rather find one that plugs into the car's 12v.

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm gonna get one now. Got your adapter recently too, and it looks great. I am tempted to cut some threads into the post on your adapter though, and bolt it on - if it's possible to get a bolt up under there. This one will be dedicated to the Tesla, so no issue...

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

Looks like maybe you could take this one and simply drill a hole in the top (assuming there's enough clearance for the stud in Mike's adapter) ... https://www.amazon.com/Torin-Steel-Scissor-Jack-Capacity/dp/B004PX8BC2/ref=zg_bs_g_15708081_sccl_1/145-7925792-7695863?th=1

The perfect Model 3 emergency jack?

Mike, can you point us at an inexpensive scissors jack that will work well with your socket adapter ? A lot of the ones I'm seeing have a slot at the top instead of a hole.

Tire Rotation [recommendations on where to get tires rotated?]

So I have a regular shop jack (platform jack). I need one other jack, and it'd be nice if it were the small portable kind you keep in your car. But it needs to work with the pucks. Can someone point me to an inexpensive portable jack that works with the pucks ?

    How to use jack stands?

Here's a tip might be helpful here ... I had a slow leak (thankfully ended up not being a hairline crack in the rim). I jacked the corner up using a platform jack and a puck. But then I realized my jack has a slow hydraulic leak and the car would settle to the ground (resting on the brake...

tire service in Chapel Hill NC

My brand new MYLR has a slow leak in one of the tires. I fear a hairline crack in the rim (although I don't see one on visual inspection). I guess nothing is particularly special about Tesla tires or rims, except for the sound-deadening foam. Still, I'm wondering if anyone here can...

    How to use jack stands?

Found this image, which suggests it's ok to put jack stands anywhere along the side rail - if I understand what they mean by "safe stabilization points". Not clear why it's ok to support there if not ok to lift there ... (I have a Model Y, but found a similar image for the Model Y) OTOH, it's...

MASTER THREAD: Powering house or other things with Model 3

Looks like the XT90AS are only good for 40 amps or so though. Only good for 500 watts or so. Most people are going to want a lot more power than that, no ?
  33. R

Rear tire always gets low first

I also am noticing (on my MYLR received last month !) that one tire (left rear) goes low fairly quickly whereas the others seem to hold air very well. Not sure what to do. Local nearby tire shop would probably check it out for $10-20, worth that not to drive to Tesla dealer (40 min each way)...

    Replacement wheel covers

I went with these. Like the absence of logo. https://www.rpmtesla.com/collections/model-y-wheel-accessories/products/tesla-model-3-center-caps-lug-nut-covers-29-with-20-off?variant=32843279269942

    Replacement wheel covers

Yeah, I see a zillion of them on Amazon - cheap, but at least some reviews saying they break. I guess I can try it, and spring for the Tesla one if I get much breakage. At least one of the after-mkt ones is flat black, which I like more than any logo.

19" Gemini wheels without covers ?

Call me crazy, but I think the 19" Gemini wheels look pretty cool without the covers, whereas the covers look kinda cheap plastic. There's one problem though: with the wheel covers removed, the wheel bearings are exposed (to contamination) - not good. Anyone else like the no-cover look ? Any...

    viewing Sentry mode clips

I haven't had an incident where I felt I needed to see Sentry mode videos, but just for grins (while I've had the USB drive out to add music) I've looked at the Sentry mode videos. What I notice is that each incident is divided into clips of exactly one minute each, or all four cameras. This...

    dumb question about mobile app

I'm finding the mobile app incredibly confusing - and can't help thinking I'm being an idiot. When I open it up, below the picture of the car there are a series of icons (lock, fan, etc). Does the state of the icon show the current state of the car, or the state in will go to if I tap the icon...

USB music - folder structure? "Embedded" cover art?

Next thing you know, it might start handling tags correctly (e.g. not fragementing multi-artist albums) !
  42. R

USB music - folder structure? "Embedded" cover art?

If there were, it would also have to be supported by whatever tag editor I'm using (which is currently Tag Editor Lite, on Mac, and doesn't appear to). There is a "Comment" tag, that might not be so bad.

USB music - folder structure? "Embedded" cover art?

So the proposed solution appears to be to copy AlbumArtist to Artist (so Artist is the same for all songs on the album) and incorporate the per-song artists into the track names. A simpler option might be to simply interchange Artist and Album Artist - I checked and the car behaves properly if...

    Supported USB File Types

iTunes has the same album name for each song. But a different artist. I've got a half-decent solution which is to copy all the files for compilations to a separate directory (on my Mac) and use a free app called Tag Editor Lite to change the artist name on all the songs to VARIOUS. So when I...
  45. R

USB music - folder structure? "Embedded" cover art?

That's what I'm coming to also. On these compilations, simply make copies of them (not in iTunes), then use a free tag editor (Tag Editor Lite on Mac looks good) to change the Artist tag on all the songs to VARIOUS. Then, in the car, I can find all my compilations by selecting VARIOUS under...

USB music - folder structure? "Embedded" cover art?

Jumping in, hope this is appropriate here ... Things are working pretty well for me, converting the AIFF files in my iTunes library to Apple Lossless (aka. ALAC, losslessly-compressed in M4A files). Poking around, it looks like ALAC used to not work, but it's working fine for me now (brand...

    Supported USB File Types

Both really, but the latter is the problem I'm trying to solve here. Yes, but I have no way to make FLAC files (without using some other app). But that's ok, ALAC is working fine - except for the fact that compilations are fragmented into as many albums as there are distinct artists...

    Supported USB File Types

Being naturally suspicious as a Murphy-respecting engineer, I decided to test this. So I created an ALAC M4A file from an AIFF file in iTunes, put that AIFF file aside, and then created another AIFF file from the ALAC file. The two AIFF files don't compare byte-for-byte; but there's a single...
  49. R

    Supported USB File Types

Thanks for the explanation. AIFF is uncompressed - as far as I can tell, the file sizes certainly are consistent with that. And it definitely include tags. iTunes has two "encoders" which result in M4A files: one they call AAC, and the other "Apple Lossless". From the file sizes, the AAC...
