Clarity around CAC imbalances, voltage imbalances, bad bricks, and battery warranty - 2015 90D

Probably lots of factors at play in why SMT and other apps' nominal capacity don't match the straight V * A * bricks * modules math, the main ones being: - Voltage drop is not linear from 100%-->0%, therefore estimates of 50% voltage are just that, estimates. Though estimating from 51% should...

Clarity around CAC imbalances, voltage imbalances, bad bricks, and battery warranty - 2015 90D

I’ve been fed this info many times, and heard lots of conflicting info on whether the buffer is accessible or not. My drive well below 0% was after recalibrating my BMS many times (more than a dozen) as recommended by Tesla and others on here as one of the bricks in my battery was dying. High...

Clarity around CAC imbalances, voltage imbalances, bad bricks, and battery warranty - 2015 90D

I’m fairly confident in the SMT buffer of 4kWh based on how far down below 0% I’ve driven my 90D on the old dying battery. I’ve gone 11 miles past 0 at ~310wH/mi = 3.4kWh. And I wasn’t dead yet, just too scared to keep going. Not sure how temp plays into the calculations.

2021 Model X, Monroney Sticker Range Increase

Old thread I know, but I can’t find many other threads that discuss the G vs H battery revisions (2020 LR+ vs late 2020 and 2021 LR++ should we call them?). I’m interested in picking up a MX of this vintage. Was anyone ever able to assess capacities of these batteries through charging, Scan My...

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

Interestingly, on SMT the last 6 bricks (1 module) on the refurb HV battery seemed to initially have a slight but distinct lack of capacity compared to the others after the replacement. They would be the first to reach a higher voltage at higher SoC and vice versa at lower SoC. I’m suspicious...

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

Sorry, life and a growing family got the better of me for so many months here. Tesla gave me a refurbished 90kWh battery. Took about a month to get it all done. Car is better than when I bought it now, but not as good as the brand new 87.5kWh batteries some have received when refurbs are on...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

Can’t be calculated from other values in SMT. Sounds like only the iOS version gives them out. Not sure if other ways to get that data, but it’s a value calculated and reported by the BMS directly it seems.

Battery defect for IT brainstorming BMS_u029 - P85 MS 2013

I essentially figured that, but I’m more curious as to why in this situation, as it would involve taking a full brick out of series, not an individual cell out of parallel. Individual cell removal has clearly not been an appropriate solution.

Battery defect for IT brainstorming BMS_u029 - P85 MS 2013

Is this (a u018 error) at all a case where the the “snip out” method of “fixing” the battery would work? It seems like creating a 95/96 brick, 396V battery by taking the one degraded brick out of circuit would maintain brick balance and “restore” range since the BMS limits capacity/range based...

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

Old battery had no label unfortunately. Fell off or was removed. Could see the residue where it was. I think some of the gurus on here have mentioned it’s not uncommon for the label to fall off.

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

Alright, after some additional digging, I found a reman 90kWh battery in the parts catalog. It is technically not for my 8/2015 build Model S. Practically, it's probably just fine. Googling that reman part number nets essentially no results. I'll keep TMC updated on what I end up receiving as a...

Battery defect for IT brainstorming BMS_u029 - P85 MS 2013

Makes sense. I didn't realize that the u029 error reduced charging capability that much in all cases. Again, seems like with a chance of thermal runaway/fire, no matter how small that chance, that some level of urgency might be relayed by the warning. I've seen "pull over safely and tow...

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

I don't dispute that at all. But I haven't found one in the parts catalog, nor have I heard an anecdote on here of someone receiving one.

Battery defect for IT brainstorming BMS_u029 - P85 MS 2013

I find it interesting that the u029 error reads: "Maximum battery charge level reduced. OK to drive - Schedule service." The "OK to drive" part is starting to seem highly questionable to me. I can see that message being appropriate for the u18 imbalance error, where a brick is just losing...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

Additional note from all this: the brick ID is almost always wrong or even flat out backwards. In the pic above it says my max CAC brick is 45, when brick 45 is/was the problem child all along. First brick to reach max voltage and first to bottom out at low SoC, demonstrating it’s severely...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

Totally wish it had brick-level CAC reporting. Interesting you use min-to-avg delta % instead of min-to-max. Useful to know; I was wondering if there was a slightly more official of the two calculations to use for imbalance %. SMT is clearly reporting max-min as the CAC imbalance total. Good...

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

I think I’m most curious at this point if reman 90 packs exist. Service center is giving me mixed messages about new va reman zero say in the matter since it’s warranty work. I’ll certainly report back when I know more.

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

Also posted in the FB group, but it sounds like I might be one of the first but not the very first reported 2015. Error showed up at very low SoC and went away with charging. I took photos and quickly made a service appointment. Tesla never messaged me via the service part of the app...when I...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

Seems to me that the iOS version reports CAC and Android does not for some reason. It does take a few minutes for it to show up on iOS. But all the screenshots I've seen with CAC listed are iOS.

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

Yes I’m aware and have joined the Facebook group as well. Not a big Facebook guy generally, however. This thread is to start a similar conversation about 90kwh batteries, as I suspect I may be one of the first, but likely not the only, imbalance failures of this type of battery. Share details...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

I’ll follow that up with a thank you, @Recell. We’re all here just trying to understand more and help each other out, and you’ve been very generous with sharing deep knowledge that is limited to only a handful of individuals outside of Tesla, who also rely on that knowledge to drive their...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

Second @kirkusss, my SMT app calculates/reports what seem to be valid CAC values. So no, not referring solely to voltages and SoC values. See photos posted above by them in this thread and the other CAC thread I started referenced by @EvDart. It would be very odd that if those aren’t real CAC...

Clarity around CAC imbalances, voltage imbalances, bad bricks, and battery warranty - 2015 90D

What you’re referring to here is overall degradation and total energy capacity loss. This may well be due to all 96 bricks losing some capacity equally, which is not warranted on older Tesla batteries, but rather considered normal wear and tear. It may also be due to a brick imbalance, but we’ll...

Clarity around CAC imbalances, voltage imbalances, bad bricks, and battery warranty - 2015 90D

I’m on the iOS SMT app, but I would assume the same data is available on the android version. After some period of time with data coming in (usually 2-5 minutes) that app calculates CACmax, CACmin, CACimbalance, and CACavg values as well as identifying which bricks are min and max (The brick ID...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

I ran for over 6 months and multiple software updates at greater than 15% CAC delta. 20% triggered it right quick. When you refer to a 100mV delta, is that at a certain SoC or voltage range? I also spent several months at greater than 100mV imbalance (at rest, climate off and everything) at...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

Yes, agreed, not many "hard stops" in the BMS for voltage imbalances per @wk057 and @Recell , but perhaps this CAC imbalance is one. At least its a value that (with SMT and a little calculation) can be monitored by the slightly-above-average-Joe-Tesla-driver and help folks anticipate when that...

    90D replacement battery under warranty?

Curious if anyone has within the past few months had their 90 battery replaced under warranty. Hoping to build a bit of publicly available info as we reach the realm of many of the early 90Ds running out of battery/drivetrain warranty. For first reference, mine has been trending toward a...

What Constitutes Battery Replacement Under Warranty for Older Batteries?

Unofficial word from my Tesla service tech was that for older batteries (those without the 70% range guarantee) that a brick imbalance of 20% is one means of being considered defective. I'd been spatting with them for a few months now over rapid degradation (20-25 miles - about 10% - range loss...

Clarity around CAC imbalances, voltage imbalances, bad bricks, and battery warranty - 2015 90D

Quick update for anyone out there battling a worsening brick imbalance: Things gradually continued to worsen with the imbalance and we reached what by my calculations (ScanMyTesla data) was the unofficial 20% CAC imbalance that the SC tech said would be considered defective. BUT, before I could...

Clarity around CAC imbalances, voltage imbalances, bad bricks, and battery warranty - 2015 90D

Thanks, I’ve done several supercharges including 8 of them on a 1000 mile round trip last month, hasn’t shut down on me yet. Done a couple supercharges at single digit charge percentages up past 90% as well. It’s been almost 6 months of progressive worsening, though the rate has slowed recently...

Okay, I've read dozens of threads on here of the past couple years of owning a 2015 S90D, and first of all, thanks to so many for providing insights and useful information. Particular thanks to @wk057 and @Recell for their incredible depth of knowledge about our batteries and how they work...
