Did Tesla really lay off their entire Supercharger staff

i don't know about that ... lots of superchargers are just not that full all the time. For me, superchargers are only for road trips. I imagine that's the case for a lot of people. Gas stations famously don't really make money off the gas ... they make it off the attached stores.

    Entire Supercharging Team Fired?

I'm not seeing a generous take on Elon's action here, to be frank. We don't know if there's something going on behind the scenes, of course, but if Elon is so out of his mind as to not understand that cutting the entire supercharger team needs additional context, then he's still acting crazy...

HV Battery Died with 7 miles range left showing on Range display

If it were a bad capacity estimate on a pack with healthy cells, why would the pack go immediately into shutdown? Wouldn't you expect the remaining estimate to drop unusually quickly first as it enters the tail end of the discharge curve, not just enter a shutdown state (especially when there...

HV Battery Died with 7 miles range left showing on Range display

Of course I do not know for a fact that this very particular mode of failure is what's going on in OP's battery, but it's called out in the presentation and clearly OP's battery is defective in some way. Averages and expected behaviors do not apply. You're assuming the battery pack is...

HV Battery Died with 7 miles range left showing on Range display

I believe the charging curve Tesla uses while supercharging mitigates a lot of the wear on the battery, correct? Of course supercharging isn't going to produce *less* wear on the battery than Level 2 charging, but the data out there seems to indicate supercharging batteries today isn't as scary...

HV Battery Died with 7 miles range left showing on Range display

There is a failure mode with li-ion batteries where the electrolyte oxidizes and coats the negative electrode. It causes relatively sudden / catastrophic loss of capacity. I would not be surprised if the BMS is just not well equipped to deal with this failure mode and tell you what is actually...

3D Printed Rear Headrest Tablet Holder That Uses Headrest Poles

These look great. Would use one made for iPads. I found a pretty good holder eventually, but the vast majority seem optimized for loose insertion and not for holding onto the tablet in the event of an accident.

    Laptop tray - any opinions?

I agree the Jowua tray feels a bit bulky surface area wise, but I don't see any alternative to it ... it needs to sit in front of the steering wheels and it provides just the minimum amount of space to function as a reasonable desk. Any smaller and I don't think it would be quite as useful. I...

    Laptop tray - any opinions?

I ended up buying it. It's amazing if you need to sit in your car and wait for a bit. I got a ton of work done on it while the wife shopped ... and was quite comfortable the whole time doing remote desktop type work on my iPad. It stores away very well in the frunk. With a reasonably slim...

I regret my Model Y purchase because of seat comfort and seating position problems

I haven’t had any comfort issues on day trips, but I did find my butt a bit sore after a 5 hour road trip. I tried a generic gel grid seat cushion off Amazon and it took care of the problem quite easily. Recommended.

Am I crazy? Model Y without home charger...

You're right about the theory, but do you feel like 200 ft is a worrisome distance for WiFi over a directional antenna?
  12. L

Am I crazy? Model Y without home charger...

I believe you're missing the detail of "with a directional antenna or dish" that is being discussed. It does not sound like this has been tried yet? Regardless, if you are planning on getting rid of the car soon, perhaps this isn't a rabbit hole you want to go down. But wifi signals can go...

First impression of FSD and how TSLA should promote it

When it gets better, I could see myself buying it for kids or old parents to keep them (and others) safer. At the moment I'm the one that drives ... once a week and pretty safely, so it's hard to justify the extra expense above and beyond autopilot.

If you have line of sight, I’m not certain you need anything on the far end where the Tesla is.

A directional wifi antenna or dish should cover that distance pretty easily.

    Travel cooler/fridge

The big downside is it can only do 40F below ambient, which makes it more of a drinks fridge. To use as a normal fridge, you have to plan around ambient temps, inconsistent performance, lack of long term freezing temps (and certainly nowhere near 0F), etc. Compressor based fridges definitely...

Wall Plug Over Heat Issue - Better 6-50 Receptable? (Using Mobile Charger)

Yes, this kind of stuff is scary. The frequency of these horror stories makes me believe the majority of electricians are just trained monkeys who have imitation learned and who don’t understand the theory behind anything they are doing.

The quest for the ultimate efficiency.

Yes, is this about efficiency or isn’t it??? I believe lowering the car improves efficiency if OP hasn’t tried that yet.

This Latest Attempt to Force FSD Upon Everyone is Hurting the FSD Cause More Than Helping

I don't know, why wouldn't you? I've only driven it for one day so far, but in chill mode on the highway it seemed to be just autopilot with FSD lane changes that I can activate with a stalk. That was a plus for me. I did encounter some annoyances with the speed limit constantly going under...

This Latest Attempt to Force FSD Upon Everyone is Hurting the FSD Cause More Than Helping

I wouldn't pay 12K for it but i did find it pretty useful. The lane change stuff is annoying, but my sweet spot was putting it in chill mode and just using the turn stalk to make it lane change (which I figured out does work on the second day). I do have lots of thoughts but i overall was much...

Am I crazy? Model Y without home charger...

Interesting situation overall and thanks for the additional details. It really seems like you're threading a needle here in terms of getting everything to line up, so it's still pretty difficult to zero in on an actual solution. But that carport situation sounds promising. One thing that does...

    Travel cooler/fridge

We liked the Phantom when we had it, but in hindsight, it really doesn't match up to the Tesla specific ACOPOWER fridge. The TesFridge, being specifically designed for the subtrunk space, properly vents the heat directly out of that space. The Phantom can't do that, so in addition to being...

Can't run service mode battery health check without internet connection?

OK yeah ... this is definitely not working. Blew a few hours on this. I can start the test but it never seems to ACTUALLY start. I never see the Test In Progress indicator on the HV system screen or hear the heater and fans running to burn energy. I suspect this is due to my charger being...

Can't run service mode battery health check without internet connection?

Oh, there’s an internal gateway? Yes, it did ask me to unlock the gateway by holding the brake and right turn stalk before running the test. Maybe I should reboot the car and try again?

Am I crazy? Model Y without home charger...

Feels like more detail on this situation is still warranted. How far are you from a plug of any kind? Is anything in the way? What exactly is your landlord against? Electrical receptacles are not particularly controversial ... maybe he/she doesn't want to put in a whole EV charger, but that...

Can't run service mode battery health check without internet connection?

So I prepped all week to run the battery health test before a big weekend trip, and I keep getting this message. The car is at 30% SoC, should be fine to run the test. It seems quite obviously to be some sort of connectivity issue with the server? But I have so many questions: 1. I DO have...

100% range on new Model Y LR with 3 miles on it calculates to 301 miles

To be clear, I don't think going off percentage is really bad or anything. I think what most people end up doing is just fudging in a lot of safety margin to avoid doing too much math, so the rest of the discussion below is really just about those margins where one ends up needing to calculate...

    Laptop tray - any opinions?

Hi all, I'm looking for opinions on these laptop style trays ... aka: Jowua - Foldable Car Tray for Tesla In particular, general opinions of these products (do you love them, hate them?) and the ergonomics of how far back you need to put the seat to make it actually usable. I often find...

100% range on new Model Y LR with 3 miles on it calculates to 301 miles

Those on-screen miles are rated miles of range, so I always mentally derate by some fudge factor + safety buffer. If i were trying to think about range in terms of percentage, I would still need to do that + convert to a battery percentage. Just seems like an extra unnecessary step. I do...

100% range on new Model Y LR with 3 miles on it calculates to 301 miles

Yes, this has always confused me. How does using percentage help? Doesn't one end up having to convert that percentage to miles anyway?
  34. L

100% range on new Model Y LR with 3 miles on it calculates to 301 miles

I believe the ranges on the purchase page are EPA range numbers, which reflect a test cycle wherein the car is driven until dead. The miles on the screen have some miles taken out of the number as a buffer ... about 4.5%. So what you're seeing looks kosher to me. In a gas car without any...

Phantom Drain (vampire, parasitic, maintenance) with long term parking.

Correct ... I went on a trip for a week. Went from 40% to 39%. Just make sure you aren't obsessively pinging the car or running features that keep the car awake and you'll be fine.

    Charging below 50%

I don't understand your question. Maybe wait on the questions until you watch the video first?
  37. L

    Charging below 50%

I'm saying one shouldn't charge to 100% without a good reason. It takes several hundred 100% depth of discharge cycles to degrade the battery to 80%, so you should spend those wisely. I personally plan on just calibrating one or two times a year and that's mostly it. Even for a road trip...

Long Term Battery Costs, Fears, and Serviceability

Yes it is. There are obvious benefits to high integration, but I find the built in obsolescence to be objectionable. I would like to see us to get a place where safety and efficiency goals can be met with modularity still present.
  39. L

Long Term Battery Costs, Fears, and Serviceability

Definitely want batteries to be replaceable and just cheaper. There's a lot of work to be done to make this possible due to how the battery packs are becoming highly integrated with the EV's themselves structurally and the need for battery replacements that aren't fly by night in terms of...

Travel charger pigtails I made today

Sure. While I think you are aware none of this setup is particularly kosher, I would highly recommend you at least redo your 5-15P -> 14-50R pigtail to something like a 5-15P to 6-20R (or 6-15R if you're actually using 5-15 extension cord). There's no reason to use the Tesla 14-50 adapter with...

Travel charger pigtails I made today

So the point of this was to use a 5-15 extension cord to get extra length? That wasn't very clear from the initial post ... and does seem a bit backwards. What if you had bought the following? 1. NEMA 14-50, 14-30, and 10-30 -> 6-20 adapters. 2. 6-20 Extension cord 3. NEMA 6-20 adapter for...

Travel charger pigtails I made today

I can't quite follow what the point of this is. Doesn't Tesla already make many of these adapters? What does making your own get you? And how is 240v interacting with your 5-15 sockets and plugs?

My Experience Taking my Model Y down to 0%

The voltage measurements at the top and the bottom of state of charge help to calibrate the BMS to represent the true capacity of the battery. It's worth doing every so often as a single deep cycle is hurting the battery by a miniscule amount relative to the total expected lifetime of the...
  44. L

My Experience Taking my Model Y down to 0%

Most graphs show about 500-1500 100% DoD cycles to cause degradation to 80%. One or two of those cycles per year to calibrate the BMS is hardly noteworthy in that context. I plan on calibrating once or twice a year.
  45. L

My Experience Taking my Model Y down to 0%

Doing a 100 to 0 run every year is perfectly fine. No individual cycle of that depth is “good” for the battery, but at that rate it would take decades or centuries to noticeably impact the battery. There are many other reasons for the battery or the car to fail in that period of time.

Is it better for my car to spend more time at 50% or have shallower discharge cycles but spend more time at a higher state of charge.

I have been making this point ... the way you are stating what you read is not quite correct (I do not think the expansion is "visible" to the naked eye), but is heading in the right direction (the effects of expansion / contraction are real and significant if repeated excessively on the margins).

capability of center console USB-C plugs

If you replace the ports with higher power versions, how will you ensure this doesn't overload something? I'd love higher power as well, but in reality I haven't found a serious need for this in my own usage. Two alternative ideas tho if you seriously need 100W PD charging. 1. Use a USB-C...

Is it better for my car to spend more time at 50% or have shallower discharge cycles but spend more time at a higher state of charge.

Because you aren't cycling the battery daily, leaving the battery at a lower state of charge during the week is probably the dominant factor in battery aging. But also, charging to 100% to arrive home with 50% is definitely going to wear your battery more quickly. Parts of the battery...

Finally found a good iPad / tablet holder for rear seats

So it's been surprisingly difficult to find a solid tablet holder for a kid in the back seat that looks to be reasonably safe in case of an accident. Nearly all the designs seem to be some sort of loosey-goosey clamping or retention mechanism that definitely will not hold onto a tablet during a...
