Plaid S or Highland Model 3 Performance

I dumped my 2023 M3P for a Plaid. The 2024 is simply warmed over a touch and for all intents and purposes is the same car. I have 0 intentions of ever going back.

Help me decide Model 3P or Model YP

The Y looks like an ugly jelly bean, while the 3 is much less offensively shaped.

    Chill Mode usage

My M3P was set to standard for the year I had it. I put it in chill once and just laughed. OE tires lasted 8,600 miles, and the replacement set was about halfway gone after another 8,000. Traded it in at 17k for a Plaid. The OE tires on that thing are about half gone after 4K, and that includes...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I hope the above is true, but I find it very telling that tesla made a supposedly badass car and decided to ignore every acceleration metric except a moderate decrease in 0-60. If it was a 10.7 @ 125 car, I would think they'd capitalize on it.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

This right here is easily worth .2 to 60, which tells me that there really isn't improved power through 60 Mph, its simply a stronger initial hit. The OG Performance was SOFT from a stop. So, it appears that Tesla has quickened the initial power ramp to get a marginally better 0-60, and after...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

I went to a no-prep 1/8th mile event on the worst strip of asphalt I've ever driven on. Car runs 6.1-6.20 on the street, but here it was spinning up to 70 Mph and running 6.60. Tire slip absolutely can be felt, but the TC system is by far the smoothest I have experienced. If you don't think...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Applying more power at the rear during an understeer condition will only serve to take weight off the front end AND try to accelerate the vehicle, which will result in severe understeer. Natural understeer is certainly considered safer than oversteer for most drivers, but it does not have any...

Is the Model S worth it over the Highland M3?

From someone who daily drove a 2023 M3P for a year and ditched it for a 2021 Plaid...... The 3 is what it is in terms of suspension(partially addressed by the Highland), handling, ride comfort, etc... I liken it to a Civic, it just does what it does, and fundamentally it always feels like the...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

That was fixed with a SW update, and my car is smooth as silk. Compared to my M3P, the Plaid rides like a Rolls Royce.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Get the Plaid and swap the factory wheel for a Hansshow wheel. The yoke is a worthless piece of *sugar*.
  11. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

It's extremely easy when the car will already dead hook. Throw a bit quicker torque ramp in there and you're done. The only thing different about the new car powertrain-wise is the larger inverter on the same old rear motor. It's going to throw more power at it while possible, and the then motor...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

"Highland Performance Plaid Speculation", all 216 pages of it. You should look up the definition of "misinformation", because this ain't it.
  13. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The Plaid has 3 new motors designed to produce a flat HP curve, while the "new" 3 has the same old stuff warmed-over just a touch. The fundamental power curve is still going to be the same. A "Ludicrous" upgrade, if there ever is such a thing, will simply make it quicker to 50/60/70 before...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Do you honestly believe it picked up a measly .2 to 60, but is magically going to pull like a train after that? Low 11's will be the norm, with a trap speed of 120ish.
  15. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

So, 2 tenths quicker to 60, still falls on its face after that, and Ludicrous mode likely just warms the battery to even get that number. I guess the race is on to get one into the 10's after switching wheels/tires and ripping out the interior. No thanks. Keep in mind, the old Performance made...

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

For a regular MS, I'd go to Pueblo and do some 1/4 mile, but it would probably be a great 1/8th car at PPIR since it will likely dead hook on that slippery asphalt. Plus, it's easy to find a safe 1/8th mile spot just about anywhere.
  17. I

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

I didn't even ask, I just went to PPIR instead. If I had to guess, it's because they know a stock Plaid will likely dominate in the "Street" class against all the highly modified ICE cars. I noticed the tires were required to have a 300 or greater treadwear rating, and exactly 0 RWD cars are...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The 3L will feel like a dog compared to the Plaid, and FWIW, you will absolutely get used to a Plaid after a fairly short time. Great used Plaids are $65K now, I really cant see a reason for a performance-oriented person to buy a 3L unless you want NEW and just hate the better car for some reason.

Plaid Drag Racing - Not such a great night

Make sure you can run. I tried to go to the cash days thing this past weekend and they specifically banned Plaids in the rules. Check out the no-prep street drags or track sprints at PPIR this weekend, it's super laid-back and you can run 30 times if you like.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The old P's made 520/650 at the wheels on a dyno for reference. The figures then fall off a cliff after ~50 Mph.
  22. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The capacitive touch buttons work extremely well. If that's all that's stopping you from getting a Plaid, I hope you REALLY enjoy the tiny bump in performance the upcoming "L" or whatever will offer.

To Complete Steering Wheels, and Lateral Gs!

The yoke is gimmicky trash, I replaced mine within two weeks with a proper steering wheel.

No tax credit for purchase vs a $7,500 credit for a lease, at least some of which goes to lower your lease payments. Not everyone buys cars based on projected depreciation, otherwise we'd all be driving $800 shitboxes.
  25. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

He definitely hasn't. I drove my M3P for two days shy of a year and traded it in for a Plaid. All this speculation and argument about potential tenths and hundredths of a second is pretty laughable. It's going to run whatever it does to 60(let's say 2.9 seconds with or without rollout...
  26. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

The controllers ramp in power from 0-40 MPh, definitely not traction limited. I could launch mine in the rain and it wouldn't spin. Tesla could certainly get the 60' down to the 1.6 range with the current hardware, but I honestly don't see one slightly different motor making much of a difference...

Do you hand wash or car wash your Tesla?

The M3P and the Plaid both go through the gas station touch wash every 2-4 weeks or whenever they're covered in filth.
  28. I

    Used Model S (after refresh)

Well, any refresh S is still going to be under B2B warranty for a year and a half at a minimum, and if you purchase through Tesla they give you an additional 1 year/10K miles on top of it. If you can swing a Plaid and are a performance junkie, get it. The LR's are quite slow in comparison, and...

    We have officially hit bottom!

Similar Plaids are going for $65-$70k, with higher-mileage(30-50K mile) examples around $60K.

    Snippiness 2.0

Its not what I want, it's what is available. Teslas have always had various power modes, and if pushing a button on the screen or modulating your right foot is too difficult, then perhaps consider a more pedestrian mode of transportation. There are changes I would certainly welcome, but I'm not...

    Snippiness 2.0

My Plaid drives extremely nicely in "Plaid" mode with the suspension cranked as stiff as it goes, where it stays unless I feel like putting it in Drag Strip mode. What's stupid are people who foam at the mouth for a new performance model and then bitch because they are actually more concerned...

Used Plaid market... Are 2021 Model to avoid ?

I bought a 2021 through Tesla a month ago. Fifteen thousand miles, $72K, and an extra 1yr/10k miles of warranty. Absolutely 0 issues, the car is pristine, drives like new, etc...... You can certainly save five to ten grand by getting a 40-50K mile example, but now you pretty much have 0...

Torque, Horsepower, and speed, A technical discussion

If you've ever driven a M3P, you know full-well it falls on its face. If you ask a random internet stranger on a car forum about the M3P, the responses will be "it's a one-trick pony", "LOL, worthless from a roll", "0-60 is all it has", and of course "it's fun up to 60 but then falls on its...
  34. I

Torque, Horsepower, and speed, A technical discussion

Well, yes, but here's the thing......the M3P's torque falls hard after 50-60 Mph, and it falls faster than the RPM required to make horsepower, so horsepower also falls off a cliff. This is exactly where the Plaid shines, because it maintains 90-95% of its horsepower all the way to top speed...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Not at all. It was a 2023 M3P I purchased new for $53,900 in February of last year. Taxes aside, it was $44,500 after the tax credit and I received $33,700 in trade-in value from Tesla when I purchased the Plaid. I owned it two days shy of a year. The market is flooded with "cheap" Plaids right...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

No complaining here my friend, I was simply illustrating that for me, the "loss" of value was absolutely worth it. I got a Plaid with nearly the full warranty and only 15K miles for $20k+ off a new one. At the end of the day, the M3P cost was about $900 per month for the year I owned it.
  37. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

I was tired of waiting to see what this new Performance was all about, so I dumped my 2023 M3P at a huge loss and bought a used Plaid. Given the choice 100 times over, I would choose the Plaid every time. Makes the 3 feel like an anemic tin can.

MS Plaid Dragy Testing, Tires, Tire Pressure etc

The car does what it can with the available traction. Judging by your graph, a better road/track needs to be found. I did some runs yesterday under the same conditions, same wheels/tires and temperature, and did a 6.14 @119 with a 2.29 0-60(no rollout subtracted). Traction was ok, but the tires...

  41. I

    Tesla trade in values

Three weeks ago I traded in my 2023 Model 3 Performance(showroom condition) with 17K to Tesla for $33,700. That was the highest offer I received by $700, and they didn't even look at the car when I picked up my Plaid. I'm honestly amazed they're offering $20K on a 2019.

Demon 170 taken down by Plaid....

The 170 is a joke. Can't hit it's published times stock, Can barely hit them modified on a perfect track. Barely edges out the Plaid when modified on a perfect track. Runs 0-60 in 3.5 seconds on the street, spin city. Never seen a street 1/4 mile from one, but I'm guessing mid-high 10's on a...

    Buying a refreshed 2021-2022 Model S 35k miles vs 45k miles or a 2024 Model 3

The 3 is like driving a tin can compared to the S refresh. My advice: Ditch the whole FSD idea(it sucks) and buy a '21 Plaid with 19's for under $70K.

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

No way that slightly warmed-over Performance is gapping, much less lapping a Taycan.

Something other than a Model S?

Is this the same OP who refused to do any software updates because they were afraid the left scroll wheel wouldn't control their Sirius XM favorites? I know it's tough, I have to move my thumb about 1 inch to use the turn signals.

Vendor Official Signature Wheel Gallery | Model S Plaid & Performance.

This reminds me of the most recent occasion I went to a nice restaurant and the owner said "we don't have a bartender, we have a mixologist, and they're much better than a bartender, they can make all kinds of custom drinks and are so advanced, blah blah blah." Just show me a drink menu, I don't...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

That's the thing, the 3 will pull a Hellcat, Z06, etc. stoplight to stoplight, but try doing a 60-roll with a Scatpack or stock Mustang GT and it doesn't stand a change. Punches way above it's class at low speeds, but is destroyed at higher speeds by anything with more than 400 horsepower.
  48. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Most of the talk here centers around straight-line performance, and IF the new P/Ludicrous/whatever does not qualify for tax credits, pricing will be $10K away from a slightly used Plaid that is(in my opinion) a MUCH better car overall that has proven over and over again to deliver on...
  49. I

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

Sure, that's valid. it is an entirely different car and is certainly larger and heavier, but the ultimate cornering grip is higher than the 3. The Plaid is an ICBM that handles great for what it is, but if you're focused on Autocross or hitting the apex of every turn on your commute and don't...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

FWIW, used low-mile Plaids are in the $65K range if you want the real deal and not a slightly warmed-over midsize M3P with lackluster performance.
