Cooling the Performance Model 3 On Track – An Overview of Our Modified Heat Exchangers

FWIW I don't expect much to change. The modifications will pretty much all carry-over, and things like the current limiting aren't going to change, as the HVB hasn't changed. In fact, the cars built outside of the United States probably won't be any faster than the outgoing Performance 3 due to...

Cooling the Performance Model 3 On Track – An Overview of Our Modified Heat Exchangers

It's very dependent on the track, car setup, and how fast you are. For example, this weekend on a track with a lot of low-speed/high-current corner exits I got it to hit current limiting in only ~6 minutes with one slow warm-up lap.

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

This is a good point, for AutoX smaller diameter works better. For track, doesn't make much of a difference.

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

Tread width is 10.5" for the 285 - should be fine on a 10.5" wheel, wouldn't go wider.

The quest for wider wheels and tires, 295, 305 and beyond...

IMO 305's on 10.5's don't provide enough sidewall support, and you would likely be faster on something like a 285. 305's on a 11, on the other hand, would be faster than a 285 on a 10.5. I think the Tire Rack tests illustrate this well. It's also somewhat dependent on the tire construction as well.

FWIW I did some testing this weekend and concluded that -3.5F and -3R to be near ideal camber settings. Tire pressures at 38psi seemed to be about right.

Cooling the Performance Model 3 On Track – An Overview of Our Modified Heat Exchangers

The MPP Cooling Party Controller I think is great because it allows you to be far more consistent with your laps without giving up a lot of speed. Here's an example of a ~240KW limit. As you can see, the current does not change throughout the 17-minute session. Normally, you'd be losing power...

    2023 200TW Tire Assessment

Good luck with the move, hope everything goes smoothly! IMO the wide-body is completely overkill. It's expensive, you won't get the resale value out of it, and we're talking about probably tenths of a second here. I've found 275's on 10.5's to work quite well, so that's what I would recommend...

    2023 200TW Tire Assessment

If you're just starting out, picking something with longer life as opposed to outright pace is likely your best option. For those cases the Goodyear Supercar 3 or the Kumho V730 is likely your best pick(s). I've found Tire Racks width measurements to occasionally be inaccurate. So...

    2023 M3 RWD + Erange Tires = M3 Highland range?

There are several other similar category tire manufacturers represented in that test, and there's no evidence to suggest that Sailun stands out from them. Looking at testing done on other Sailun tires, they consistently rank near the bottom, and a far cry from the performance of other...

    2023 M3 RWD + Erange Tires = M3 Highland range?

You made the same point we're trying to make. It's not about the fact they're built in China. It's about the factory and the quality control of the company making the product. Sailun has no reputation for making high quality tires in a high quality factory with high quality control standards...

    2023 M3 RWD + Erange Tires = M3 Highland range?

Making the blanket statement that all tires made in China are bad tires isn't accurate, but there are absolutely big differences between tire manufacturers in China, and the product coming out of each factory. Ultimately, you get what you pay for, and cheap brand tires are undeniably worse than...

Reducing battery drain on the track

At full power a modified Model 3 with a good driver will consume about 20-25% every five minutes. Of course, it can only keep this up for 7-10 minutes before hitting significant power limiting. In the Model 3 Challenge, we limit the cars to ~220kW to preserve energy and extend runtime. In a 15...

Steering wheel stiff after Tesla SC completed wheel alignment

Steering wheel stiff after Tesla SC completed wheel alignment

If I were to wager a guess - the alignment offset is not being reset. There is no inherit "issue" with the 3/Y suspension or steering. As if all other Hertz vehicles have a perfect alignment lol? Tesla has sold millions of 3's and Y's and a list of five threads on a forum signifies some...

Steering wheel stiff after Tesla SC completed wheel alignment

Yes, there was a change made to use slightly larger bolts on the front points. Have also never seen the originals fail, fwiw. To use this "gen 2" rack in an older Model 3 you literally just replace those two bolts with different ones. Not sure what you're referencing on the inner tie rods, but...

Steering wheel stiff after Tesla SC completed wheel alignment

Completely disagree. The 3/Y is incredibly easy to align. I've done dozens. The problem is that most people performing an alignment don't know what they're doing. Also, unaware of this "steering design flaw" you speak of.

Anyone tried Rock Auto's "Suspensia" brand for compression rod bushings?

Highly unlikely JB Weld is going to hold up IMO. Filling them with some sort of bonding agent would probably work better, but likely wouldn't stiffen them much. Or, just get the tried and true solution.

    2023 200TW Tire Assessment

The only concern I have with the V730 for AutoX use is that it takes a wee bit of heat to come up to temperature, whereas the RE71RS is pretty much ready to go. Probably can't go wrong with either option though. I would go with 275/40 sidewalls on 18's personally. 275 is as big as I would go...

    2023 200TW Tire Assessment

Certainly toe-out on the street will chew the inner edges of the tires. I've found it to be fairly similar on the track as well, though to a lesser degree. Auto-X again will present some different characteristics, as, like you said - not a whole lot of driving in a straight line lol!

    2023 200TW Tire Assessment

305/30/19 vs 275/35/19. I would say auto-x is definitely a different use case, so I'm not certain my data is applicable. It would be interesting to test them back to back. Inner edge wear seems to be a product of the toe you're running more so than the camber.

    2023 200TW Tire Assessment

I think the consensus is that all Toyo 200TW tires are uncompetitive at this point. The same company owns Nitto as well, so the compounds are very similar, and therefore deliver similar results - uncompetitive. I don't think I would spend my money on them personally. The Michelin PS Cup 2 is...

You all have about talked me out of a Tesla altogether...

I've put a cumulative 183,000 miles across five Tesla's. As far as actual failure of a part is concerned, I replaced the FUCA's on a 2018, and a charge port door went wonky on another 2018. Hey All! We got some pretty good exposure to lots of different tires during the Model 3 Challenge, and we put lots of laps on them. Here's my thoughts on where we stand on the current selection. Model 3 Challenge 2023 Concluding Event – Laguna Seca!

The best a competitor put down on our limited-power format series was Drew Peterson with a 1:41.087. Tony Barber pulled off a 1:36.623 at full power. The F8X M3/M4 is a good comparison, IMO, and the best I can find on 200TW tires is a 1:38.2.
