    [Speculation] Model 3 0.237 kwh/mile!

Given that the actual usable battery capacity is less than the stated pack size, you should probably scale that down by 2-5%. The S75 usable capacity is 72.6 kWh per Jason Hughes, which would mean about 306 mile range on the Model 3 at 0.237 kWh/mile.

    Model 3 v2

I'm reading what he wrote. If you choose to read something else (like his mind?), all the more power to you. It's interesting that you're now so adamant that Elon didn't mean it would look like a spaceship, when just last month you thought "all signs are pointing to something we haven't seen...

    Model 3 v2

Because that's what those words actually mean in plain English. Despite your attempt to add a qualifier that did not exist in Musk's statement, it conveys a desire to examine the pen that typically includes, but isn't limited to, visual inspection.

    Model 3 Interior: Ugh!

    1. The feel, experience, witness, or usage of something does not mutually exclude seeing it. 2. In English, we also colloquially use the word "feel" as a synonym for seeing, observing, noticing, etc. If you look at the totality of Musk's statement and its context in response to a suggestions...

    Model 3 Interior: Ugh!

Wait until you see the real steering controls and system for the 3. It feels like a spaceship. Probably something to do with that.

What would make you cancel your Model 3 Reservation?

This is not how the displays look on every other car Tesla makes. Unless you've never seen a modern flat screen TV, you'd know many people prefer the aesthetic of a display mounted flush against a vertical or angled surface.
  7. J

What would make you cancel your Model 3 Reservation?

I casually mentioned out expectations of a 300-mile range earlier, but it really is a deal-breaker the more I think about it. Using a rough approximation of the S85 range/speed chart, extended driving at highway speeds would bring the nominal range down to 220 miles or so. Multiplying that by...

    Poll: Model 3 Dissuasion?

Those are combined numbers for the S and X. If you look at the S numbers alone, there's a case there for low/stagnant growth. I don't know how much of that is attributable to supply vs. demand, but based on Elon's continued anti-selling of the 3, I'd say it's a concern for Tesla.
  9. J

What would make you cancel your Model 3 Reservation?

In the near term, nothing short of shaky financials will cause me to cancel the reservation. Long term it's going to be cost, range and possibly early reviews. Given our winters here, range must be close to 300 miles. If the Ontario EV credit (around $USD 9K) goes away, I would likely...

Another discussion about EVs as they compare to ICEVs

Except that it doesn't actually power the Teslas, unless you have some sort of multiple battery-pack solution which seems impractical. The electricity you are producing is not the electricity you are using for the Teslas.
  11. J

Another discussion about EVs as they compare to ICEVs

Your solar PV system charges your two Teslas overnight? Interesting.
  12. J

    Elon says no Central Speedometer

But that has nothing to do with the decision to have it or not - everything points to the choice being made on cost, not better design.
  13. J

    Elon says no Central Speedometer

Well, yeah, not building something is generally much simpler than building something. If Tesla fundamentally believed that this was a better way of doing things and no one would miss the instrument panel, why not remove it from future versions of the S/X? Yeah, I didn't think so.
  14. J

Another discussion about EVs as they compare to ICEVs

The problem is that most of the things you listed are largely irrelevant to most drivers, they do not constitute "fundamental" differences. If I could summarize most of the practical differences, it would be: acceleration, software, smaller carbon footprint and safety. But for the most part...

Elon Tweet: No 'significantly new consumer-facing technology' in Model 3

Elon Musk on Twitter "The shorter wheelbase only allows for a 75 kWh pack in Model 3 at current cell/module energy densities." He's not technically ruling it out if you want to be extremely picky, but why not take this at face value? The alternate view that Musk doesn't really mean what he...

Elon Tweet: No 'significantly new consumer-facing technology' in Model 3

The problem is that the point of contention for most people won't be upgradeable at all, and it's such a integral part of the daily experience. I know there was some fuss raised about the hatchback (or lack thereof), but in the midsize sedan segment, I really don't think trunk space drives the...

Elon Tweet: No 'significantly new consumer-facing technology' in Model 3

It was always going to be cheaper AND inferior to the MS - there should never have been any confusion about that when we're looking at a two-fold price difference. I do understand the general sentiment that it should "feel" like a Tesla - but compared to an ICE alternative, though. The...

Elon Tweet: No 'significantly new consumer-facing technology' in Model 3

The difference is that the iPhone was always meant to be a singular mass-market product with successive iterations. Yes, it occupies the luxury/premium space, but a $1,000 luxury good inherently has a different market than a $100,000 luxury good. Tesla can and does make better versions of the...
  19. J

Elon Tweet: No 'significantly new consumer-facing technology' in Model 3

Critics of the first iPhone were both right and wrong. The battery life did suck, it wasn't as secure, and you couldn't type emails/texts as quickly. But what it COULD do turned out to be much more important than what it couldn't do, which in turn created so many more uses (and users) for...

Elon Tweet: No 'significantly new consumer-facing technology' in Model 3

This really explains 95% of the reason there is such disappointment on the controls/dash - it was the over-promising. After all, "watered-down Model S" is pretty much the Model 3 in a nutshell right from day 1 of the Secret Master Plan. The other 5% of the problem is a large tablet jutting out...

    Model 3 Battery size

I find it highly unlikely the Model 3 would see a 5X sales by increasing range from 215 miles to 240. Furthermore, the base model is just that - the base. Tesla ia clearly betting that they can skim off some consumer surplus by offering higher range options at a cost premium.
  22. J

    Model 3 Battery size

Why does it have to? Blackberry devices had much better battery life than the first IPhones (or even current IPhones for that matter), you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone that cares about that anymore.
  23. J

    Model 3 Battery size

"Can't" and "won't" are different things. If the demand is there to support the various software-enabled battery tiers at their respective price points, then I don't see the issue. The resolution and screen size of Iphones has lagged behind Samsung for a while now despite a higher price and I...

    The Dreaded Exchange Rate (CAD/USD)

It's not so much Trump as it is interest rates starting to drift apart. BOC seems intent on maintaining rates or possibly even cutting them, whereas the US Fed has signalled coming increases.

    Panasonic Debuts Next-Gen Head-Up Display

I think you're reading something that isn't there (i.e. distinction between Tesla tech and 3rd party tech). It's fairly clear that the overall sentiment is that the S and X will get any new tech first because they are the premium products. As it should be given the relative price points...

Part 2 of Unveil - Uber-type ability to rent out your car

I think we can safely assume that everyone here that's adverse to car-sharing would probably never rent out their personal homes and would retch at the thought of strangers sleeping in their beds. So obviously the "personal item" aspect will never go away for some. The point is that the model...

Part 2 of Unveil - Uber-type ability to rent out your car

It's not for everyone, but it's not as if you couldn't price the cleaning into the offering. Look at Airbnb, does the exact same thing utilizing a much more expensive asset (housing).

    Tesla Master Plan Part 2 & 3

No, bad renters wouldn't really care at all about damage to the home. They can simply find another place to rent, or worse, decide to squat without paying rent (depending on jurisdiction, eviction may be difficult and costly). On the other hand, damage to the car may correlate with the health...

Joshua Brown's family hires law firm - attorney claims more accident victims coming forward

And that's the key point. You can draft any kind of waiver form you want with a million disclaimers and qualifications, but the question of responsibility and liability ultimately lies with a court/jury - again, something that was 100% foreseeable. There's also a PR element of the battle here...

Joshua Brown's family hires law firm - attorney claims more accident victims coming forward

This whole thing was inevitable and entirely foreseeable. There will be more accidents, injuries, casualties and lawsuits related to AP. I see a lot of arguments essentially stating that this particular crash wasn't the fault of the AP, that ultimate responsibility lies with the driver, etc...

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

That is exactly right, as obvious as it may sound. Any delays are the responsibility of Tesla as a whole. To say it's the fault of department X or Y based off a news article is a simplistic understanding of "facts" that actually provide very little insight.
  32. J

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

Sure, but very inter-related departments that require a great deal of coordination and communication to successfully work as a whole. Design choices may cause supplier issues, which in turn affects production rate if parts are short (see Model X). Poor production processes can increase the...

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

"How to make an MS", i.e. a singular vehicle, is a totally different question than how to make 1,000 or 10,000 or 1,000,000. It's not simply a matter of robots that need to be programmed, it's a complex process of supply management, financing, human resources, logistics, quality control, etc...

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

The problem is that large scale manufacturing is hard. And I'm guessing that it gets harder when you're making complex machines that people's lives depend on, cost $100,00, and are supposed to last for years. The S has not been out for "a while", it has barely been 4 years, and they've made...

Tesla officially trying to upsell M3 to MS 60

Ontario resident here, and I also got the email. For us, the EV incentives are tremendously cut back if the MSRP exceeds approx. $57K (basically only Teslas), and the new S60 is still well above that. It's about a $7.5K difference on incentives alone compared to the Model 3. I'd be comparing...
  36. J

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

Yes, but the huge number of cars being produced by other automotive companies isn't all that relevant to Tesla. They are on their first mass-volume iteration of a new manufacturing process of a new design with new parts. These aren't suppliers and parts that they have a long and stable...

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

What you perceive to be a simple problem isn't simple at all. In fact, scaling efficiently and effectively is THE problem of manufacturing. Here it is straight from Elon: "It's worth saying that making one of something is quite easy. Making lots of something consistently that's going to last...

How could we NOT have Model 3 production by the end of 2017?

They haven't "been" through anything, they're - still - going through production issues on a much smaller run of vehicles. And when/if they get that down, that's hardly sufficient preparation for ramping up output 4-5x. That's like saying any skilled home cook could step into a busy restaurant...

Fiat can do it in 12!

Actually, the way you're describing Kodak makes the analogy even more accurate. They weren't completely blindsided by a competitor (they developed a lot of the digital tech themselves). Instead, they put blinders on themselves because they were too consumed by maintaining their old business...

Fear of Delays, and why they are unfounded

I'm certainly rooting for everything to go smoothly, but this is just silly Pollyanna optimism. As Musk has said himself, making 1 of something isn't hard, making lots of them IS hard. Large scale manufacturing is hard, and nobody on the planet has a proven track record of building hundreds...

Do you need a positive test drive before taking delivery of your Model 3 pre-order?

Maintenance goes beyond the specific actions performed during the actual Tesla service visits per se, and it isn't only tied to the number of moving parts. The Model S is a design that has had very few iterations, manufactured by a company with a relatively short history of mass production...

Wonder how many people are going to flip their Model 3?

Very important part which negates the flipping potential. I'd figure most people who'd want the 3 desperately enough to pay an all-in premium of 20% on top of retail would've already reserved as early as possible. And most people with early reservations because they waited in line or already...

How does the trunk work on the Model 3

It's the lighting as well. In the rear view, the inner/bottom edge of the trunk opening is not seen well as it's in the shadows. In contrast (literally), the side view does show light shining on it and it visually/physically reduces the effective size of the opening.

    I can't imagine - What will part 2 bring?!

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the #1 thing I want to see in part 2 is that they've made significant progress on production.
  45. J

How does the trunk work on the Model 3

Doubt I'm the first one to make the connection, but I think the greater emphasis on rear headroom has a lot to deal with the rise of Uber and other car/ride-sharing services. Add in the autonomous driving component and more passengers will be moving towards the back seat, so the model 3 design...

How does the trunk work on the Model 3

I think was primarily it, although the desire for the visual impact of the 1-piece glass roof may have had a role too. It's a disappointment, but not a deal killer for me. I don't understand the "rent a truck" proponents - don't you realize how inconvenient that is just to transport something...
