I'd prefer Tesla make money and stay in business. I also think it is a 'bonus' for people who did buy early instead of wait for some feature. If orders drop because of this change I'm sure Tesla will add other combinations.
I like the homage to the model T with the 'you can have the cheapest model as long as it is black on black.' I'm guessing that the most popular model on the cheap end used to be white paint with multi pattern and white headliner. By taking away the most popular, it will drive the upgrades (it...
Imagine how other manufacturers must feel having to keep changing their target performance. The Mission E Tesla killer is being toasted before it is even off the drawing board. (Although it is a sweet looking car)--How far behind will it be when it is produced 2-3 years from now? By then...
The site makes money on clicks, not facts. Yes, The cult of Tesla is being trolled. The best way to thwart coverage like that is by not visiting the site--frequent the sites that at least fairly evaluate Tesla. I suggest visiting the sites Elon tweets if you are a true believer. :)
With dealerships, it would likely force Tesla to a yearly product cycle. Could you imagine a dealer getting a shipment of vehicles right before the AP 2.0 announcement? if it was a boutique dealership like Bentley, the markup needed would inflate the price substantially--especially with lower...
The flip side are cars where you need to get the top of the line model to get the safety suite--not an al a carte or post purchase option. I admit it is interesting how Tesla's manufacturing efficiency decision is resulting in ethical questions.
The other side of the 60d is that it was a way of addressing the falling costs of battery tech. How do you avoid cheesing off recent buyers with a lower the price tag? They lowered the cost of entry without offending the original 75d buyers. Genius.
My glass 3/4 full guess would be that on the 17th they announce that the 5 seat Model X is non Falcon wing, non-mono post so that it is in a lower price tier--and therefore a 60d isn't necessary.
I'll take the glass half full guess. There are a lot of queued over seas orders after pushing Q3 for US. Tesla has prioritized high end models on the queue previously. If they have the orders to keep production going, focus on the highest markup. They still need have to show their plan for 5...
There are currently 3 different physical battery packs. 75, 90, 100. The 90 will likely go away when the 100's tech is applied to smaller sizes. The question is, what will the new sizes be in December when 100 is available on non P models?
At some point they have to build the 'low end' 5 seaters/ coil. Having a 100d / AP 2.0 carrot means there will be strong demand after those are produced. The difference in revenue is made up by p100d.
With AP 2.0, what are the chances they charge an additional amount for level 3 autonomy with a guarantee like Volvo? Tesla has a decent job of keeping prior owners' values up despite constant improvements and battery cost reductions.
