Tesla’s Real Range Anxiety: The YTOD

It's possible that both the front and rear motors failed in less than 2,000 miles, but others who've replied to my post seem to think it's likely that the SC made a mistake and replaced the wrong motor. Either way--unreliable motors or diagnosis mistakes--such warranty and repair problems have...

Tesla’s Real Range Anxiety: The YTOD

Yes, I diligently cover my MS with Tesla's $400 cover if it's left outside for a protracted period of time, say, 8 or more hours. In fact, I returned to the SC and covered it last Monday. I also always garage the car when not driving. The reason I do this is because the large screen becomes...

The SC might have very well misdiagnosed it the first time and replaced the wrong motor!

Tesla’s Real Range Anxiety: The YTOD

Good to hear your Tesla is doing well for you. We first looked at the Jaguar E-PACE but decided that the company just did not have the experience with EVs that Tesla has and we were also worried about Jaguar's financial stability. The Audi e-tron just seemed boring. Of the Tesla options, seemed...

Tesla’s Real Range Anxiety: The YTOD

I realize that SpaceX is separate from Tesla. I just identify it as another Elon company, supposedly with the same high-tech culture, so the SC communications system seems very backward given that culture. An SR+ is the Model S Performance, the Raven update with the permanent-magnet motor...

Tesla’s Real Range Anxiety: The YTOD

I’m having severe problems with my new Model SR+ that has only 2,000 miles on it. It has broken down twice with the “Yellow Triangle of Death,” you know, the dreaded YTOD that says “…vehicle needs service, may not restart.” The first time this happened the odometer was only at 1,710 miles. I had...

    Has Model S quality improved?

Amazing the number of "I never have a problem" comments here. Within a day of receiving my new Tesla Model S Performance, experienced the dreaded "door handle will not present." I learned about the "two credit cards and the string of shame" workarounds elsewhere on this forum but they didn't...

Upset with lack of features on Hardware 2.0

Shouldn’t be so hard on Xmen’s expecting basic ADAS features to work with a loaded MX with Hardware 2.0 for $100k+. Back in Sep, I had on order a P100DL, joined this forum to learn more about Tesla, and saw a debate going on that “AP 2.0 was imminent." At the same time, I called my Delivery...

[Poll] - are you mad that your new Tesla just missed Autopilot 2.0?

Perhaps the question should be why did I place my order in the first place. I went ahead and ordered in early August because there were articles being written about Tesla producing vehicles with new autonomous hardware. After purchasing, I could not find any evidence backing up these articles'...

[Poll] - are you mad that your new Tesla just missed Autopilot 2.0?

I was disappointed when I cancelled my August order for a MS P100D and lost the $2,500 down, but now I'm glad I made that tough decision. :) I'll certainly pony up the $8,000 for the new full autonomous camera and sensor suite. Just wondering if I should wait until January while they're...

    Firmware 8.0

The auto world is becoming more of a multidimensional competitive landscape going into 2017. Maybe for the sake of staying ahead of the competition Tesla is realizing it has to market its leading AP driver assistance equally with EV. Mercedes has lately been making a big deal about its new...

Why AP 2.0 Won't Be Here Soon, and It Won't Be What You Think It Is

Good question, given their escalating rancor of late. When the breakup was first reported back in July, the reports also indicated that Mobileye would continue to supply the EyeQ3 to Tesla in the short term. What else could Tesla be using before its "Tesla Vision" goes into production?

Why AP 2.0 Won't Be Here Soon, and It Won't Be What You Think It Is

You might conclude that we on this enthusiast site, who have no more insight than anyone else, are nonetheless aware of the Tesla foible of "Elon Time" (e.g., after making a down payment for Model X, I waited over two years, but had to give it up when there was still no delivery in sight). Why AP 2.0 Won't Be Here Soon, and It Won't Be What You Think It Is

Tying the introduction of AP 2.0 to that of the M3 is still highly uncertain. Green Car Reports just published this poll of "Elon Time" today: When do you think the first Tesla Model 3 electric cars will be delivered? 34% Jul-Dec 2017 (per Tesla) 38% Jan-Jun 2018 20% Jul-Dec 2018 8% 2019 or...

Why AP 2.0 Won't Be Here Soon, and It Won't Be What You Think It Is

AP is not just a novelty feature any more; it's become a huge differentiator on par with EV battery range. Granted, Tesla was clever with their recent OS 8.0 software update, but by Elon's own admission, what they did was facilitated mainly by new radar-interpretation algorithms given to them...

Why AP 2.0 Won't Be Here Soon, and It Won't Be What You Think It Is

I haven’t seen much in these posts that emphasizes the “competition factor.” It’s hard to imagine that Tesla would hold back on AP 2.0, when the German automakers are coming on so strong and so fast. We’ve seen lots of articles on the rapid advances in autonomous features over the past few...

Given the renewed rancor between Tesla and MobilEye (just this morning saw a blurb "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" on CNBC Squawk Box), will Tesla stop using the EyeQ3 in current production earlier than what they said back in July? If so, what camera system will tide them over until they finish...

Yes, I've seen some recent work out of U. Florida and elsewhere how deep learning on massive sets of disparate data can lead to a completely erroneous result. Still ML/DL has proven useful for visual recognition, which in my work, we usually cross-check with a multi-model approach. In the case...

What Tesla accomplished in its v8 software release with a coarse radar point cloud is indeed creative and unique, and it will buy them some more time to develop their follow-on AP 2.0 hardware platform. Elon has gone on record against LiDAR in the hardware suite because of its ineffectiveness in...

That's how I'd approach it too, but Tesla shouldn't wait too long to move forward with AP 2.0 hardware. NVIDIA provides a deep-learning development platform that's available today. The methods for collecting and analyzing more data exist and are being pursued by competing automakers.

I'd like to know more about how they do it too. Quanergy claims they're on to a whole new generation of LiDAR. Maybe this will shed a little more light (ptp). Might LiDAR be added to the radar and camera for the AP 2.0 hardware after all? Elon’s well publicized opinion against LiDAR is that it’s not necessary, radar with a camera is adequate, and that LiDAR doesn’t work well in rain, snow, or fog. LiDAR is also prohibitively expensive (check out...

    Firmware 8.0

Another possible reason for Tesla’s current v8 tack on AP 1.0 is that they were priority-focused on solving the problem that caused the Florida accident, and the target platform had to be the two-year-old installed base of AP 1.0 cars. We’ve heard Elon say he believes you can do a lot with...

You make a good point, if the advances for AP 2.0 are only going to be merely incremental. After I’ve made a major purchase decision, I generally stick with it and ignore any new announcements. However, AP 2.0 is not just incremental; it would be a major shift in the capabilities of Tesla’s...

That would be OK, not worried about the software that's OTA-upgraded regularly. The consensus in this thread on the hardware, however, is that it won't be easy to retrofit, so seems new purchasers should wait (hopefully only a couple quarters).
