DIY Tesla Model 3 Driver Console / Instrument Cluster?

Hi Bpiv, Thanks for the help. The hardware is pretty much finished. I do need a lot of help on the software side though. On the version 3, I have 2 LCDs: https://es.aliexpress.com/item/4000055026873.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.49cc3c0069Kfia&mp=1 Controlling them is a single ESP32 on a SPI...

DIY Tesla Model 3 Driver Console / Instrument Cluster?

There are 4 buttons on the console currently. I am using two for settings (brightness, display modes, etc.). You could use the other two to control some car functions, but I am weary of injecting data into the car's CAN bus. It now in the read only mode.

DIY Tesla Model 3 Driver Console / Instrument Cluster?

Not much progress in coding I am afraid, I just don't have much free time to play. But I did finish the two CAN bus ports.

DIY Tesla Model 3 Driver Console / Instrument Cluster?

The problem is sourcing a narrow wide OLED screen that can fit the form factor I want. I like the design to remain small enough to not block the vents, but big enough to relay all the information I need. This is second version combining the two center OLEDs into a single larger LCD.

DIY Tesla Model 3 Driver Console / Instrument Cluster?

Thanks, it was printed on a Markforged printer with Onyx (carbon fiber and nylon mix). The finish is a satin dark gray which I think looks better in person than in pictures. Here is the same print in ABS on different machine.

DIY Tesla Model 3 Driver Console / Instrument Cluster?

Right now, it is just a series of OLED screens with the embedded microcontroller to receive and display the data. You can program it to display anything you want assuming 1) you can fit that data on these screens, and 2) you can extract that information from the car's CAN Bus. My plan is to...

What do you guys think? 3D printed shell out of nylon/carbon fiber. Electronics is an ESP32 driving 5 OLEDs. I am just starting on the software.

Any way to upgrade the dome lights

The LED is soldered on so it is not easy to remove and solder on a new one. The amp draw of the new LED would be different from the original and may not work with the board anyway.

Any way to upgrade the dome lights

@XLR82XS , Glad to hear you got it installed. I thought the best feature was the ability to turn it on and off with the lid. Keeps the car dark until I need the light.

Any way to upgrade the dome lights

Hi @PNWLeccy, The pins crimp on to the end of the bare wires coming from the LED. You do need a crimping tool for this. The cover plate slide on to the plug once the pins are in place to secure the wires from coming loose. CJ

I had a few requests for instructions on installing the LED so rather than answering each one individually, I made a video. Hope that helps: Instruction on making your own is here: https://www.mymod3.com/led-light CJ

    My center console

On another note, an update on the kids' project. They never could make contact with their charity at Casa Mantay and I would not let them send the check without verifying where the money is going. So we agreed to find a local charity. In June, they made their first $10k donation to the...

Got some time to catch up today. Here is the picture of the center console this morning with the completed dash and door trim: Thanks for the offers to buy my dash but it is the only one I have. Sorry. Note that this is vinyl and not real wood. Any good wrap place and can do this for you...

@S2000, The first one is taller and is designed to cover the silver edges. I do also like the second one better. Do you prefer matte black or glossy? No current plans on manufacturing these - we need to clear the back log of other projects. Need to make sure there is a market for this. CJ

    Center Console Wood Wrap

@03DSG, That layer is actually pretty thin, so no problem with the key card reader. I thought about completely redoing that rear piece and repositioning the key card reader into a vertical format so you could slide the card into a slot instead of the current flat layout. Maybe a project for...

You are right about the dash ofcourse, This is the only picture with the dash I have at the moment. But it can be made to match along with the small door trim pieces. The wood looks much better in gloss. Never liked the matte wood in my old Mercedes.

500 to 3 different warehouses, I think. The kids are finishing up with their high school graduations and settling in for their last summer at home. They're not going to spend much time on this project once they start college, hence the need to move this to the less labor intensive...

At low speeds Model 3 is too quiet [Update: now solved with new pedestrian warning sounds]

My 84yo father in law got hit while walking on the side walk by a guy backing out of his driveway. But the guy was driving a Suburban and neither party was paying attention. That accident could have been prevented had either one payed attention to their surroundings. Noise maker on your model...

    Driver Centric Center Display

The slit was a great idea, but does require quite a bit of torque to compress the two sides in aluminum. And once done, it is harder to remove as the pieces are now bent. Not a big deal if it is a permanent fixture. But one of the early tester wanted it to be easily removable. The new design...

His SMAIset, My stuffs survived the last Texas summer. And if they can survive here, I am pretty sure they can survive most places. The key is the type of plastic filament used. PLA is generally bad (low transition temp). ABS and PETG should do fine. CJ

I wish I knew Mr. O'Leary. Would have gladly hand over the projects as I am not a good businessman. I am just not that interested in the manufacturing/sales sides of things. But as I wrote in a previous post, I did enlisted some help, and he will handle all that aspect of it from now on. This...

    Driver Centric Center Display

Hi RV, The project is actually moving along well. We have already lined up manufacturers for both the mount and shroud. I am making some final tweaks in the design now before handing off the drawings. The OCD in me is causing most of the delays now. This is what I am playing with in the lab...

Yep, shroud is a one piece sleeve. Mine is covered with 3M matrix black vinyl. Final version will be dark gray like the original. I love to design and build these things. I am just not good at mass producing them. There is just not enough time on my schedule and that part is not as...

    Driver Centric Center Display

Regarding the brackets, the local CNC shop finally got back to me regarding the cost. For this small production run, it is prohibitively expensive and that is with a pretty good family discount. I am now exploring the idea of having a cast mold made, Working on a few prototypes of those at...

@Glamisduner , @EVnut, The procedure for flocking involves completely covering the entire surface area, allow the adhesive to set for 24 hr, then shaking off the excess flock not attached. It had been working well in the past. But, for some reason in the last big batch, we have a few people...

    Driver Centric Center Display

Hi Roentgen, I have a few current prototypes which require you to align the top and bottom halves of the shroud. You will then need to use two included 5mm Allen screws to attach the two pieces. A little difficult to do as you will need to get to the bottom of the display. But it does not...

    Driver Centric Center Display

@Roentgen, No splicing or re-wiring needed. Just remove the right center console panel. The existing plug connect the LED in the front center console compartment to power. Unplug that LED since it will not be needed anymore. Plug this LED in, replace the panel and you are done.

Hi @SeventyFix, Beautiful chairs you built. I love the mission style and your workmanship is amazing! I am just a novice woodworker so do chime in with suggestions and advice. So far, I just raised the grain with water. Sanded it off. And dyed with TransTint dark walnut. I am letting it dry...
