How to deal with phantom braking?

Yes it really seems to be this stupid, still. I had this happen repeatedly 2020-2022 on a highway going 65mph where it suddenly thought I was on the local road 20 feet below and cut my speed to 30mph.

Using Summon to park very close to a wall. Looking for advice to develop and improve my technique.

Summon is a parlor trick they cooked up, shipped half baked, and don't maintain. Use it at your own risk, don't be shocked if it does something insane 1 out of 10 times, or gets stuck causing you to need to climb across from passenger side to move it, etc.

If the logic was this well controlled & simple, they'd have "fixed" it by now.

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

I am extremely doubtful of this assumption. The assumed logic here is: AP is dumb enough to hallucinate objects such that it PBs urgently. AP is smart enough to judge distance of a following car reliably. AP has logic such that it makes the decision not to brake when there is a following car...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

#3 may be a common German approach or legislation based. I have a BMW iX with Driver Assist Pro which works very well on the highway. Additionally, when on the highway and traffic brings me down to 30mph or so, it offers/engages a hands-free mode. They aren't accepting liability like Mercedes...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

Pretty rough, looks like a 15mph speed drop in under 2 seconds, even with you intervening quickly to stop it from dropping further.

First Tesla vehicle delivered with HW4

Imagine blowing $100K on a car and you have a punch list that long? They've only been producing the X for what, 7 years now? I'm sure they'll get the hang of this eventually.

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

Right, but this gets to the crux of the problem with a lot of Tesla automation. What the manual says, what the website says, what Musk tweets do not match. It muddies the water enough that people push the envelope of where each feature is supposed to actually work. So you'll see arguments with...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

Autopilot or FSD? Because when you read the proper Tesla manual, Autopilot, Autosteeer, NoA are for controlled-access highways only, and there shouldn't be any cross traffic situations...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

If there's not a ton of urgency, give it 6 months or maybe a year. Look at the speed they are converting some of their chargers. 80 stalls in NY state in 2 weeks since its near the factory I believe. You may be surprised how fast they will move to collect some of that IRA money. Why lock...

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

Yes, AI/ML models are non-deterministic. However, for $15k, it ought to be good. Which it is.. not. If it drives good, in slightly different ways, fine. If it drives great, good, ok, awful, often in the exact same road in same weather conditions, it is not confidence inspiring. Consumers care...

Poor Model Y Tesla Vison Experience

Agreed, I think FSD/AP remains in an "uncanny valley" of trying to do too much while not doing the basics great. Imagine you bought an automated coffee machine - the bean bin dispenses to the grinder which grinds and dispenses to the brewer, which boils water and dispenses coffee. When done it...

Growing FSD liability could be massive.

I ride in ubers/lyfts/taxis all the time, and for years had no car.. racking up $400/mo in car rides. Absolutely AP/FSD is more stressful than just riding in a human driven vehicle. Look at how many guys will quietly admit to having to turn off AP/FSD when their wife is in the car or they get...

    Major Phantom Braking Issues

Go test drive some competition and be surprised how competent they are on the highway by comparison. If you have a functioning Tesla already, there's no urgency to take delivery of a new Tesla that invests you further into their ADAS system. Tesla is far from the only game in town nor a leader...

New M3P Owner Questions and disappointment

If the Cybertruck kicked you in the nuts when you got in the driving seat, would it be "a selling point for the car" because its a "feature not available in other brands" ?

Tesla Begrudgingly “Recalls” FSD Beta for NHTSA

I think a fun test would be if each state DMV took an FSD Tesla through their license road test and scored it like a human. Given the probabilistic nature of FSD behavior, it's a coin toss if any single shot test would pass or fail. So let's say the DMV could require it pass say 7 out of 10...

Tesla Begrudgingly “Recalls” FSD Beta for NHTSA

Exactly The behaviors NHTSA called out are behaviors that have existed with FSD and been complained about by users since the beginning of time. If they were so easy to fix, they'd have been fixed. Some of them get fixed an un-fixed in subsequent releases. Some of this is the nature of AI/ML...

FSD beta is now available to everyone who has paid for it with no safety score requirement

As a less tuned in observer as of late, it seems kind of crazy. Most recent video reviews I saw were that it was a bit better in some areas but still wildly unpredictable and not particularly good in actual city driving...

Would you buy again FSD today?

Exactly And I think they are really cruising for a serious regulatory crackdown from both consumer safety & fair trade / false advertisement angles 1) regulatory framework under Dem WH 2) tide turning as more people become more skeptical of Tesla FSD claims/abilities (even in this forum the...

Exactly, if you read the owners manual apparently Autosteer, TACC, NoA, Traffic Light Control are all BETA?.. But not Autopark/Summon/Smart Summon? https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/model3/en_us/GUID-32E9F9FD-0014-4EB4-8D96-A8BE99DBE1A2.html If you put those 7 features in front of me and...

    Bizarre AP experience today

This version COULD have been fire, had the driver not intervened (the fire would have been 1000 ft down the side of that cliff) The only thing worse is the new fad of Tesla owners having their kids run/walk around public streets to show how - see, this version of FSD, on my car, in this...

    Bizarre AP experience today

This seems fairly awful Even a supposedly attentive driver let the car drive itself fully over the double yellow lines with at least 2 if not 3, and possibly all 4 wheels.. while intervening. This on a pretty blind curve where there was no way the driver had good line of sight on the oncoming...

Former Presidential Candidate calls for Federal Government to pull FSD from public roads ASAP

Logically a same-cohort comparison will probably show an increased safety upon FSD start (due to vigilance) and then a decay of safety as the driver lets their guard down. One bias is likely that drivers most annoyed by / feeling unsafe from FSD will exit the program/stop engaging it. Another...

Former Presidential Candidate calls for Federal Government to pull FSD from public roads ASAP

Firstly - only Tesla has this data, and whatever is shared with regulators has been showed to have omissions / aggregations / obfuscations Secondly - you have to "test in" to FSD beta and therefore in theory, be a very very very safe driver. So any comparisons re: if FSD beta makes driving...

Former Presidential Candidate calls for Federal Government to pull FSD from public roads ASAP

I mean isn't implied that the car can avoid crashing into obstacles with tweets like this? FSD 10 predicts height from video pixels directly, without needing to classify groups of pixels into objects. In principle, even if a UFO crashed on the road right in front of you, it would still avoid...

Former Presidential Candidate calls for Federal Government to pull FSD from public roads ASAP

I think the problem is no one has any idea what FSD works / doesn't work for, Tesla doesn't publish it, and the state of the system varies wildly release to release with many regressions. It's hard to watch videos of recent releases of FSD beta with the car making no attempt to avoid stationary...

Would you buy again FSD today?

Really the $1.7k "Active Driving Assist Pro" package on my BMW iX does better on the highway than Tesla AP/EAP/NoA has. I'm really left feeling that Musk diverted resources to FSD and blew the highway AP lead entirely in the last 2-3 years.
  32. S

Would you buy again FSD today?

I bought FSD when it was briefly something like $2k for EAP owners, and I still think it was a waste. I would absolutely not spend $12k on it now, this is just fan service subscription money for Musk. You only held your last car for 2 years. What are the odds that FSD is achieved with current...

How to deal with phantom braking?

I think a lot of Tesla FSD/AP boosters were like me - came from no car/cheap car previously as we were not "car guys". Further, AP has stood still while Tesla focussed on FSD, and the the world has moved on and caught up. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis highway systems have shown in reviews to be extremely...

Seriously, why does Elon feel the need to lie about even short-term fsd beta timelines.

If you think the head of AI leaving isn't going to cause massive attrition in the org over the next 6-18 months, you have no idea how tech orgs work. First phase people leave because the pressure trickles down to them in his absence / take on responsibilities they don't want / share his same...

    Karpathy leaves - what's next for AP/FSD?

The L5 vs L3 thing is unfortunate in that Musk very obviously on a moonshot strategy, at the detriment of smaller incremental goals being achieved. The improvements in AP/EAP/NoA from 2018-2020 were noticeable. The product has now stagnated for 2 years while the team focusses on the (likely...

    FSD vs Stopped School Bus

So we shouldn't expect FSD to handle __ situation, because Tesla didn't tell us that it did.. but also we shouldn't expect Tesla to list all the situations it can't handle because the list would be too long? This is quite the cop-out.

    FSD is a fraud

FSD trolley problem: Pull the lever to turn on FSD - your car might turn directly into the path of an oncoming train which it can see & has rendered on center display... BUT!! you'll produce more data to help the car one day drive as adequately as the average driver Or you can do nothing and...

Seriously, why does Elon feel the need to lie about even short-term fsd beta timelines.

This is insane and backwards. Remember the saying "things that never happened before happen all the time". The car should be able to deal with classes of problems, not seeing every specific flavor of events to learn from them

Seriously, why does Elon feel the need to lie about even short-term fsd beta timelines.

LOL thats comically bad though right? Cars never reverse down a block while causing for parking, parallel parking, or having missed a turn? For FSD to be anywhere near ready, it needs to be able to deal with anomalous events defensively rather than "probably nothing" it. I'd have expected a...

Seriously, why does Elon feel the need to lie about even short-term fsd beta timelines.

I'm sorry but as a paying customer this is absolutely the wrong way to view things. The company which we have given thousands of dollars for beta software does not owe us anything? We should have higher expectations as a customer. Tesla is the only car company with the chutzpah to charge...

Seriously, why does Elon feel the need to lie about even short-term fsd beta timelines.

I find it hard to get excited by anything Tesla since the Model Y. Everything since has been overhyped, over-delayed, or compromised in some way. Musk was the right CEO for the rapid growth phase, and navigated Tesla through some treacherous waters. However to go mainstream and sell to the...

    FSD is a fraud

Right and it's not like the defects we are seeing videos of are bizarre edge cases you find after the millionth mile... I am more and more convinced the car is sensor suite & compute limited, beyond just the NN learning rate. I find it funny that Tesla is moving in the direction of less...

    FSD vs Stopped School Bus

This falls under a broad category of quibbles I've had with AP on the highway that's like.. think a step ahead or second-order decisions making. Another example of this I find annoying is when traffic has slowed considerably off in the distance but still very clearly visible and coming up...
