Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

I would say there is nothing that you can do to avoid the issue, if it's going to happen. I tried to fix 2x and was unsuccessful. I'll ultimately try again, but I don't plan on putting it back in my car. No need to worry, some motors have no issues at all. Others have various issue. It's...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

I don't think I was able to change anyone's mind at Tesla. I honestly believe that they are still new enough that even the employees are unsure what they are allowed or able to do on owner repairs. I started talking to some of the people I knew that worked at the SC and then ultimately just...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Just to give an update, as the saga has finally ended. I installed a new (used) DU and was working with Phil to get the firmware pushed. The car wouldn't stay on the network and also wasn't accepting the update either when Phil was able to see it connected. I eventually worked through some of...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Sadly, the issue did pop up again. I finally decided to purchase a used DU and have been waiting to get the firmware pushed.. It's been quite the struggle as the car seems to not want to keep the 12V charged when it needs new firmware, so every time that Phil has tried to connect to the car...

    Salvage Car Owners Support Group.

Has anyone heard from Ingineerix? I know he just moved shops and I talked to him last week with the hope he would be able to push firmware for my DU swap. But now I'm wondering if he is stuck working on the shop or something different. I've had the DU in the car for over a month, and this was...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Follow-up: The car seems to be fixed this time. Been a few weeks and no issues. I'm still assuming that the inverter cooling plate(s) were the issue since that's basically what I sealed up this time as compared to the previous "repair". I'll be sure to update this thread is anything else...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Thanks for the almost congratulations.....I guess....even though your follow up insinuation that what I'm doing isn't my own "ingenuity", it's more of an insult. Perhaps other owners have had this same DU issue, done the same amount of work that I've done, taking an inverter completely apart...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

I would have to agree. Still a new car company and there is a lot of information out there and yet a lot of misinformation out there. I've seen plenty of stories of salvage cars getting "warranty" work but I wasn't as lucky. So, I take the route I take with everything else. Dont depend on...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Here's the additional work that I did on this repair. I believe that Phase A had a small leak on these clamshell pieces, at the corner. There is a plastic cover that goes over the end that bolts onto the gearbox. You can see this is one of my previous post (it shows the 3 copper AC leads out...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Here's my method for removing in case anyone is looking for a nice technique on the floor. I basically cut a piece of plywood that reaches across the rear subframe. Then I jack up on the middle support of the subframe, with the 3rd jack to pitch the DU forward or backward.

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

WELL.....the car drove great for about 2 weeks until I got the same error. I already know what you're thinking or wanting to say. Yes, it didn't work but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try again. I've already taken the DU back out, disassembled the inverter to a level that I don't think...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

That is correct...at least for the moment. I did not drive the car to work today, as I will be looking closer at the coolant, but it was definitely nice to have it on the road again yesterday. This would be two separate issues. My coolant leak was on the inverter side of the gear box, not...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Just another update, the car is back together and I took it for a little drive yesterday. I initially had a parking brake error, did not release. I simply put the car in park and back in drive and it released properly. I'm assuming due to the way I disassembled and reassembled, the parking...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Car is back together and everything powered up just fine. I'm working on 3D printing the inverter power cable cover, somewhat of a combination of reusing the old broken piece and gluing on my 3D printed piece. Hopefully back driving in a few days.

I would be guessing on the correct profile diameter and ID/OD. Tesla won't provide this information as it's part of the HV system. Per Tesla doc "The following will also void this New Vehicle Limited Warranty: • Vehicles that have had the VIN defaced or altered or the odometer or other...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Well, after inspecting the o-rings another time, I still see no issues with them and I'm a little hesitant to try and find a replacement of the exact same size. 1, because these look perfectly clean and no damage. 2, will getting exactly the same size really fix the issue if the originals are...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

I'm attempting to a do a megger test and I'm getting strange results. Now I'm not sure if I can even do this test on an inverter. I've tested the main two leads at 50V first, then 100V, then 250V, then 500V. Each time the meter will slowly ramp up to 15-16V and stop. The insulation...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

My initial thought is yes. I've also heard this has been done from Ingineerix. My concern is this isn't just water. It's coolant, so assuming it's propylene glycol and water. After trying to research to get the coolant off, i've basically seen water and dish soap. I'm sure there is a...

Attempts to clean. Using IPA (91% rubbing alcohol). No major signs of coolant except for at the HV leads, boards all looked clean. Last picture is my attempt to heat and suck out moisture. Makeshift greenhouse with a large container of DampRid to hopefully remove high humidity air. Placed...

Removed the transmission case, although realized this was not needed. So simple inside.

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

There are 3 o-rings that seal each channel of coolant to the inverter. I have not found any issues here and have looked at the aluminum housing that the coolant runs though. Long story short, no. I do intend to apply slight pressure to the inverter coolant housing to test those. Otherwise...

Drive unit coolant leak, tear down/test/repair (hopefully)

Hello all, This is my first post. I have a 2013 Model S, salvage, recertified car. Owned it for a little over a year and wanted to get this information out there as I had a lot of difficulty finding anything. This means the car has no warranties. I finally got a straight answer from Tesla...
