    Showroom coming to Fife, WA

Is there a way to do an after-hours drop off at the Fife service center? Is there a key drop? Even if so, is it safe to leave my car there overnight?

Road Trip to Tacoma: destination charging near Tacoma Dome?

I suggest leaving a little early, and stopping in Kirkland, WA at the free 80 amp J1772 chargers at the Nytec building. You can charge less than an hour at a ~50 mph rate and get a comfortable buffer. 416 6th Street S, Kirkland, WA 98033.

What Did 2012 MS Buyers Know About SC's and DCQC?

I was prepared to be perfectly happy with the HPWC, RV parks, Roadster adapter, and dryer outlets for charging when I ordered my P85 in Feb 2012. Supercharging was an incredible bonus after the purchase.

Very poor to no 3G and GPS signal

I had this problem with our 2012 P85, with 3G (GPS was fine). The 3G antennas are in the side mirrors and were replaced. No problems since.

Send commands to the car from a web server

You can use the "unofficial" API documentation and your own login credentials. This popular Visible Tesla app does this. Here's one link: http://docs.timdorr.apiary.io/ Visible Tesla site: http://visibletesla.com/Documentation/site_index.html

    Auto night mode not working

Yes...mine works fine. BTW, my wife corrected me...it's the two top buttons on the steering wheel that reset the driver's display.

    Auto night mode not working

Congrats on the new MS! Sorry you are having troubles with the auto dimming. First recommendation is to try the center screen reboot...hold both steering wheel scroll wheels down until the center screen blanks. In the early days of Model S ownership we had to do this periodically...not much...

    Misaligned door/Protruding panel/Pitted aluminum result

Here's what a Model S driver's door looks like from the same angle. I'll let the readers decide. And here's the original image.

    Misaligned door/Protruding panel/Pitted aluminum result

This is not a Model S door! The model S has a very pronounced concave line on the front door closure line when viewed from this angle. How about posting a photo from farther away!!???

    Anyone bored?

My recommendation: buy a boat. A big one. Keep it in the salt water. With lots of electronics, pumps, hydraulics, generators, engines, transmissions, sanitation systems, multiple power systems, radar, wood and fiberglass surfaces to maintain, there's never a dull moment. ;)

HPWC no longer opens the port door

If it works with your UMC or at a supercharger then your HPWC transmitter is bad. If it doesn't work then the receiver side of the car is bad. It's also possible that there is RF interference at your HPWC location.

Two drivers, two drastically diff seat positions: Anyone else have this problem?

I have the same problem. One workaround is to convince your wife to set to your profile when exiting the car. Or make a profile called "exit" which moves the steering wheel and the seat back and up. The problem with any profiles of any kind being tied to the keyfob is there are cases where both...

    Recommendation for Commercial Chargers

I second the Clipper Creek CS-100. Full 80A capable output, universal compatibility with J-1772. We installed two at work and they are great. We received discounts from the state for the labor and installation costs as well.

Battery interior and Repair of Model S

I believe someone a while ago figured out there are 96 series groups of 74 cells in parallel in the 85 kWh pack. This has been deduced from photos of the diagnostic screen, pics of battery pack guts, observed min/max charging voltages, and also seems to work out in a spreadsheet using known...

How do I lock the car, walk away, but leave internal systems (i.e. HVAC) running?

This method worked on a older firmware version. I just tried it briefly on 5.9 and it still seems to work. 1. Depress brake, put car in neutral. 2. Using the touchscreen controls (not the shifter stalk), put the car in park. The drive indicator on the driver's display will still indicate...

    5.1 or 7.1. How?

I had this same question, so I made a 7.1 FLAC test file with a software utility designed to play test tones through all 8 speakers in a predefined sequence. The result: The MS acts like it's a 2.1 channel system. It plays left, right, and subwoofer, but not center, left side or rear, right side...

Why does accelerating fast use more energy than accelerating slowly?

Resistive power losses in the battery pack, drive inverter, motor, and associated wiring are proportional to the square of the current. So doubling the motor current doubles the torque but quadruples the losses.

    Supercharger - Ritzville, WA

The paired stations can both be charging at the same time but share current. I believe the first one to start gets priority and the second gets what's left over.

Just verifying opinions of the combinations of P85/P85+ and 19/21 tires.

I have a P85 with two sets of rims, 21" Continentals and 19" Michelin Primacies. We use the 19s in the wet Northwest winters. The 21s have more road noise, sharper handling, more grip overall, and wear faster. The 19s are quieter, better in the rain, wear more slowly, and I think the performance...

    Firmware 5.9

I've triggered hangs in earlier versions by playing with maps with slacker going, when transitioning from Wifi to 3G, backing out of the driveway. This might be a vulnerable interval. Haven't seen this on 5.9 yet, though.

    Weird static sound

Where do you put your mobile phone when in the car? Or do you have a 3g tablet somewhere near the console? Most mobile phones will cause audio noise like you described when they are in close proximity to speaker wires or unshielded audio amplifier circuitry.

    Lifetime Average Wh/mi

Update 4/5/14 15,629 360 WA P85 21 3,352 of the miles were on 19" rims, so I have a blended result. Winter driving on the 19s tended toward 370 Wh/mi.

    Firmware 5.9

What they did makes perfect sense to me, from Tesla's perspective. Raising the car suspension was a way to immediately reduce the chances of an undercarriage collision while they were trying to figure out what happened. And I'm pretty sure their lawyers prevented them from saying anything about...

    Real Time Battery Voltage

I don't think such a thing exists. You can get clamp on ammeters, but to measure voltage you need some type of a connection. A pretty good estimate of battery voltage can be made from the state of charge. Since there are 96 cells in series, and they vary between about 3.0 and 4.15 volts per...

The 1-volt, now-it's-there, now-it-isn't dance, right after plugging in UMC

I'm pretty sure this is just stray AC voltage being picked up by the high impedance open circuit, when the UMC relay is open. I've seen it, too. As for it coming and going, that's harder to explain. It could depend on the line voltage, which varies regularly with the time of day.

    Combating LED Headlight/Taillight Strobing

LEDs are more efficient in lumens/watt at low to medium drive levels. They are more efficient in lumens/dollar at high drive levels. So cheap LED bulbs tend to use fewer LEDs, drive them hard and run them hot, which is what shortens their lifetime, and why some cheap LED bulbs will not last...

    Combating LED Headlight/Taillight Strobing

Doug is right. I spent two years running an LED driver design team for a major semiconductor company. Certain applications, such as TV studios and theaters can't tolerate the flicker and must use linear dimming. Super high quality lighting requirements, like museum lighting, also opt for linear...

    Strange Homelink Problem

I'm almost positive it's an electromagnetic interference problem. I just chased down a problem with our new EMC test chamber at work and it was the LED bulbs inside. They all have high frequency switching power supplies and a minimum of noise filtering. The receivers used in garage door openers...

    In-wheel motor

I'm wondering about the high voltage power cables and control bus that has to get from chassis to the motor hanging on the end of the suspension. This would have to be a very flexible cable routed in a very tough non-conductive sheath. Could be a maintenance problem.

Worse experience ever! More fast chargers needed!

EV roadtripping still requires some planning, at least until superchargers are as plentiful as gas stations. BTW, there are two free 80 amp J1772 chargers at 416 6th Street S, Kirkland, WA open 24/7.

Does the blinking green indicator turn off during low voltage charge?

I have noticed that when the car is locked and plugged in, if you push the button on the charge plug as if to release the latch, the charge port will light up green. Anybody else notice this? And...if you press it a second time, and the car was not charging, the HV relay will engage and car...

    alternators

The reason that the DC-AC conversion is desirable is to provide a stable line frequency for the Tesla chargers. Most of the higher end generators do this now, with an alternator powering an inverter. It's pretty well documented in this forum that Teslas are finicky and have trouble charging on...
  43. C

    alternators

Well, assuming you mean 12V automotive alternators, they will be able to put out about 2500 watts each (160A*15.6V) so for a decent charge rate of 10 kW you would need four. But then you need an inverter to convert 12V DC to 240V AC at 40 amps. There are two technical problems to overcome; one...

Older Teslas limited to 90kW Supercharging

In Q4 of 2012, when they were ramping up production and desperately trying to make the 2012 production goals, remember they were dealing with various parts shortages, and VINs began to be delivered way out of order. We speculated they were "batching" cars based on option configuration and...

    strange start up behavior

This does not seem like normal behavior. I would try the normal reboots and if that doesn't remedy it then give Tesla a call to see if they can remotely diagnose. In my experience 5.8.4 has been somewhat flaky.

Two new 80A J1772 stations in Kirkland!

My employer, Nytec, an engineering consulting firm, is constructing a new building at 416 6th Street S in Kirkland, WA. Although the building is not yet complete, we have two new Clipper Creek CS-100 units that are now operational and open for public use! They are located in the west parking lot...

    Charging from a generator.

All high power chargers that are any good these days are power factor corrected, to extract the most possible power from the source. This means they try to look like a pure resistive load (not capacitive nor inductive). They try to draw a current waveform which ratiometrically tracks the AC line...

    Decreasing rated range.

This does seem like an outlier. I would have Tesla check it out. Maybe they can diagnose remotely. Could be a balancing or capacity calibration problem. I've recovered up to 8 miles of rated range after doing many shallow cycles then a deep cycle.
