    Hydrogen vs. Battery

From Wikipedia: Mater (pronounced /mæːtɜːɹ/ or /meɪtɜːɹ/) is a formal term for mother, from Latin. So Doug, anti-Mater would be like my mother-in-law, right? I volunteer her for this worthy cause.

    Random Roadster Sightings

I'm guessing that's owner Eric (poster "Eric and Renee" from the Tesla Motors Website). At least I've surmised that Eric has a copper colored roadster, from the pictures posted after the recent LA rally. I would imagine someone who participated in that event can confirm or refute this.

Martin Eberhard sues Elon Musk and Tesla Motors

I doubt the departure of Jobs from Apple was as acrimonious as ME's departure from TESLA. For example, I don't recall any lawsuits being filed, or the back and forth recriminations. I think this particular pond is just too polluted for ME to return to TESLA. That said, if it were open for a...

    Random Roadster Sightings

Saw Martin's car in the shop at Menlo Park today. Word is he is having some upgrades done, but I didn't press for details. Sorry about the poor picture quality, but I only had my cell phone witih me.

    Tesla Roadster vanity license plates

Before I had my "BAT R EE" plate, the most memorable mistaken identity occurrence for me was when a coworker asked (before she knew it was my car): Did you see that gorgeous Ferrari parked outside?

    Solar Carport

Thanks, VFX. I wasn't aware a PV solar application like that was available. I'll look into it.

    Solar Carport

Yes, I'd like one day to have a PV system on my house, TEG. Just not sure how well it works for a Mexican tile roof like I have at the present time.

    Road Trips

I'm guessing that trip for you would involve a recharging stop somewhere, Graham. I don't have an HPC or I'd offer my house as a place to make a stop to charge. Perhaps the charger in San Ramon makes some sense for your likely route to NAPA.

    Road Trips

Ha! Not even close on that score. "Battery" wasn't available from the DMV, but this seems close enough to convey the status of the Roadster as an electric vehicle to those who aren't familiar with Tesla Motors. However, so far the great majority of the people who stop to talk to me already know...

    Road Trips

Roadster in Napa This seems like as good a place as any to post my first road trip. I just got the MC240 last week, so I was hesitant to take a longer road trip on the weekend, for fear I wouldn't be able to get the car fully charged again in time to use it as my commuter to work. So today my...

    Lightning GT

I thought it would be interesting to dredge up our old "friend" at this juncture. Who was so convinced a year ago that Tesla was vaporware and the Lightning GT was IT. Here's a recent item on the GT - DUE OUT early 2010. Which is the vaporware??? 700hp Lightning GT EV on track for 2010...

    Homelink garage door opener

Hi Graham. Yes, I too thought I wasn't going to get the homelink garage door opener because I didn't get the upgraded electronics package. As you, I was pleasantly surprised to find it works after all. It works like a charm and is quite easy to access with the touch of a finger on the...

    Want to be on TV?

Right. The Avatar was from a picture taken when I did a test drive, and since I took delivery of MY car my camera has been broken and I haven't had a chance to update the avatar. I'll get to it one day, but I'm having too much fun enjoying and driving the car to worry about that yet!

I think that was it, Graham, thanks. At least the numbers are pretty much what I remembered.

    The "Smart Grid"

Some months ago, I was directed to a site (must have been a PG&E site) where you could plug in your location by zip code and see what percentage of the enegy that they delivered to your home came from wind, hydroelectric, solar, nuclear, coal, etc. I've tried searching the internet, but I...

    Want to be on TV?

It was fun, and my car looked good, don't you think? And thanks to you, Doug, I'm sure I got my Roadster a few days early so I could have it in time to participate in the video shoot with the French TV folks. Also looking forward to seeing what I look like speaking in French, when they dub in...

Bay Area TMC Forum Meet 2 - April 26, 2009

So far I'm still planning to join in. And I have a tentative pick-up date for my Roadster of April 28th, so my car will either be nearly done, or if things go swimmingly, I will have it in time to drive it to Sunday's meet.

    Detroit Electric

There's obviously a misquote in the article. At the beginning of the article, it says "according to its CEO Albert Lam the company plans to get its all-electric cars into mass production soon, and on the market by February next year. " NEXT year, not two months ago (Feb 2009), as in the...

The AWD (All Wheel Drive) option

Are you talking about in-wheel motors? I remember Martin specifically stayed away from in-wheel motors for the Roadster, due to the added "unsprung weight" they bring, which would, as he said, "make the car drive like a truck". Maybe for a sedan that isn't as much of an issue, but it was felt...

Model S Specifications, Teases and Leaks

I don't anticipate needing or wanting a fast swap option for my Roadster, personally. I intend to use it as a daily commuter, and would use a roomier, more comfortable second car for those few long excursions I take. I have always assumed that when the Roadster battery is ready to be...

Model S Specifications, Teases and Leaks

So I'm no engineer, but can we assume that if these batteries were put into a battery pack for the Roadster, the range could go from 244 miles to nearly 300 miles just like that? (244*1.2 = 292.8 miles)
  35. SteveF

    Story on Model S reveal

Exactly. Lots of reasons that test drives for potential customers are many months off in the future (as WarpedOne reminded us - just like when the Roadster was introduced).
  36. SteveF

Model S Specifications, Teases and Leaks

I guess we'll learn more about this in the coming weeks. It DID sound like a "too good to be true" kind of quote.
  37. SteveF

Model S Specifications, Teases and Leaks

I find this quote from the Autoblog article regarding the Model S battery pack VERY intriguing: "They expect replacement battery packs to come in at "well under $5000" according to Elon." I am hopeful that means Roadster owners can also expect battery pack costs to be well south of the 20...

    Elon's Long Days and Nights - May '09 C and D

I found this tidbit nice to see, assuming the interview happened after the last Town Hall Meetings: At those last Town Hall Meetings, he very clearly backed off from his earlier assurances that he'd refund people's deposits on the Roadster if the company went belly-up.
  40. SteveF

    Story on Model S reveal

Well, the battery pack and PEM can't even be close to their final configurations, so I doubt a drive in this version is likely to be very impressive. Seems to me that would argue against letting outsiders drive it.

Car & Driver: Roadster Road Test

It's a pity, but there's that "founder" term being applied to Elon again. :frown: Martin will keep that title for us faithful followers of Tesla Motors.

Collective noun for a group of Teslas

Along those lines, a "hush" of Tesla's? A "gaggle" is already taken for geese, so I think it's best to stay away from words already in use as collective nouns. Will this be put to a vote at some point?
  44. SteveF

Collective noun for a group of Teslas

They can be both! But I hadn't considered the "he who loves to be named" drawback... After further consideration, although I still like "grin", I think either "bolt" or "charge" would do nicely.

  48. SteveF

    California Tesla Sedan Factory: Where?

Yeah, that's my vote too, but you know the decision will be based on where they can get the best deal. And since Elon lives in SoCal, and SpaceX is there, locating the Tesla plant there would allow him to have easy and frequent access. You know that will play a part in the decision.

    Ford EVs by 2012

Yes. After a tax credit of 7.5K, that puts the price at $17,500. That's a good price, don't you think?
  50. SteveF

    Um, well...

So I guess you don't have to plunk down a 5K deposit anymore before Telsa will let you take a test drive. How long has that been happening, does anyone know?
