SMS from Tesla re delivery and the virus

All fine and dandy until the hospital system is overwhelmed and you need some medical attention - whether related to COVID19 or not. This is at least 10x more dangerous than the flu according to every doctor and health official talking about it, and according to the WHO is approximately twice as...

    Powerwall Gateway

The powerwall keeps the solar running for as long as possible and charges itself with any excess. You need the battery to be able to absorb any excess from the solar and provide enough if the house load is more than the solar is producing. If, for arguement’ s sake the battery was depleted and...

    Powerwall Gateway

No, for that to work you need a battery of some description. The Solar inverters are designed specifically to follow the grid - not to generate one - and as such rely on it being present. You also need some way to absorb/fill gaps between solar production and the house load, which is where the...

Would you, could you drive a ICE again?

As a daily driver? No. As an occasional fun thing? Maybe. My wife’s convertible 2.8l Z3 is fun to drive albeit slow, loud and clunky compared to the S. Looking for when there is a small convertible fun car to replace it with for her - but I still like old muscle cars etc. Not so much any more...

    Supercharger - Richmond VIC

Not really considering the best place for superchargers is actually on the open roads on long trips. If you are stopped for more than a couple of hours then a 22kW AC charger is just as effective and can be installed for about $2k including wiring. If you are staying at a hotel or whatever then...

    [Australia] Electricity Bills

I have my car on a controlled load circuit that is at around 16c before discount and is energised pretty well all of the time other than between 5-10pm. Since I'm getting 12.5c export I don't really worry about the 3.5c difference and just let the car charge overnight when I get home.

    Maps with no mobile coverage

If you have already entered in the destination the nav keeps working but the map doesn't update details until you get back into a coverage area. I've found that the car's reception has been pretty good overall though, albeit with some blackspots where neither the car nav nor my mobile phone work.

Request to enable DAB+ - Interested?

Top be honest the addition of DAB+ radio probably doesn’t add that much to the car. I don’t listen to AM or FM any more and just use the built-in TuneIn radio to listen to radio stations using the cars internet connection. I’ve found that DAB+ reception is pretty limited, whereas the internet...

?Drop off of rate of charge at Supercharger St Leonards

To be honest I only supercharge on long trips because my time is worth more than the $8-10 per week and I can charge at home. I'll look at it next time I head down to Canberra.
  13. Mark E

?Drop off of rate of charge at Supercharger St Leonards

I haven't supercharged since the last update but note that my 90% charge is consistently at 344-345 typical on my S85 which is the same vintage as yours. Have you tried to supercharge at another location - ie one that isn't 5km from your home?

    Supercharger - Wendouree (Ballarat) VIC

Just because it has CCS2 doesn’t mean it’s a 250kW charger. It’s just so that the M3 can charge there.
  16. Mark E

    Electric V Hydrogen

Yep. 11-20% when batteries are around 80%+. That alone will make this 3-4x more expensive to use, and if the capital cost is even, then the whole thing is a failure. As battery production increases and prices come down it will be even cheaper to use batteries. In 20 years when there are lots of...

    Electric V Hydrogen

Yes, you are reading it correctly. The ammonia step is just to make it easier to transport and adds yet another level of inefficiency. A large part of what is driving this are the fossil gas producers looking for a way to make their product look greener. Woodside's submission to the senate...

    Electric V Hydrogen

Even if H2 gets started it’ll be killed by EVs, due to the dramatic inefficiency and inconvenience of H2. It’ll cost at least 3-4x as much to drive a H2 car, and the capital cost is still likely to be more as well. I actually think that it doesn’t even make sense for heavy vehicles eitther...

How much do highway chargers influence your EV purchase poll.

You can also use the ChadeMo adapter and do the trip today. Interestingly the difference between a 50kW charger and a 120kW charger is moot when the car tapers as it charges. In my experience the car is ready to go before we are, so the extra time charging would probably make very little difference.

Fair enough. To be honest, I never used the Casino supercharger at all.

How much do highway chargers influence your EV purchase poll.

In December 2014 the casino wasn’t open either, and we didn’t have portable chargers yet either - so charging options were very limited... I only charged at home for the first month or so. I can’t remember exactly when the casino opened. Originally there was a destination charger there from memory.

HPWC wiring question: switch between off-peak and retail power?

Current rates of atmospheric CO2 increase are not “natural”

Indeed. The irony of this is that Australia may succeed despite the attempts from our Federal governments rather than because of them. Households are installing solar systems and we are a leading market in battery adoption - last year we had the highest penetration of rooftop PV in the developed...

Current rates of atmospheric CO2 increase are not “natural”

Agree re Wave and geothermal, but solar and wind are already established. Nuclear is only 'clean' if you really distort the figures and overall experience globally is that it is horrendously expensive, and makes non-proliferation management extremely difficult. The new generation of more...

    AU Pricing

It's the same for anyone who has an agreed value on a lease - which I've seen from both other manufacturers and leasing companies. Why not pay it out now? Could be a heap of reasons including cash flow implications, the lease could have been offloaded to another company who is taking the hit...

    AU Pricing

While the dramatic drop in price is disconcerting for resale values, it really doesn't mean too much if you are going to buy another Tesla. The real number that is painful in that case is the changeover price to get a new one. Lowering the new car price has a bigger effect on the changeover...

    Another car tax

    Another car tax

In some instances it makes sense where the service being delivered is specialist and/or not capital intensive. Sadly most of the privatisations are not in that category. A classic example are tollways. If a private company can go to the market and raise capital, build a tollway, operate it for...

My 3rd door handle failure in 2 years

If you read the redbook doco you will see that they require the car to be serviced as per manufacturers requirements - which is perfectly reasonable imo. I remember selecting DAB and tuning but the interface needed work though as it was pretty clunky. EU Model 3 has DAB+ radio and FM... so assume ours will too!

It's relevant mate because the early demonstrator cars here were actual production cars from Europe... We didn't get DAB+ enabled on Australian delivered cars and the feature disappeared from the early demo car after it's software was upgraded. You can't just assume that because it's on Euro...

How much do you charge from solar in Australia?

Depends on your definitions. My car is charged off peak, so generally overnight, on the controlled load circuit that is shared with the solar boosted off peak hot water. Over the last 3 month billing cycle my net export of excess power (house uses solar output first) was 917kWh from a 3.3kW...

    Australia government supports for EVs

The reduced LCT is nothing to do with EV - it applies to all cars with a claimed fuel consumption of less than 7l/100km. Since EVs are generally more expensive to buy and there is sales tax and import tax, they are discriminated against. Then there is the issue of claiming expenses - with an...
