The Boring Company has been selected to build an underground transportation route connecting downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport, Mayor Rahm Emanuel told the Chicago Tribune.

The price tag for the system will come in under $1 billion, which is part of an $8.5 billion overhaul of O’Hare airport, the paper reported. The Boring Company will not rely on taxpayer support to fund the project

Specific details of the build weren’t released, but a joint announcement from the company and city is expected Thursday.

It currently takes about 40 minutes and up to $60 by taxi for travelers to cover the same distance. The Boring Company’s proposal would deliver passengers in 12 minutes for less than $25.

The Boring Company is also partnering with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority to build an underground transportation system called “Loop” that would charge commuters $1 a ride. The Urban Loop transit would consist of different levels and lanes and carry up to 16 passengers in pods that would travel at speeds up to 150 mph. Musk says passengers could go from downtown L.A. to Los Angeles International Airport in eight minutes. The tunnels will also support Hyperloop technology, which would allow the pods to travel at speeds up to 700 mph.

The company also recently received approval from the State of Maryland for a 10-mile tunnel connecting Washington D.C. to Baltimore.

The Boring Company was founded to “solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic.” It plans to use electric skates to carry pods full of people and freight through its tunnels, as well as Hyperloop pods for long-distance, high-speed travel.
