Highlights:
- Natural gas' rise continues, with more generation, higher capacity factors and more capacity additons.
- But, batteries continue to be added to the grid, possibly displacing some other peaker generation.
- PV increases, but wind doesn't. It's not been a particularly end to the year.
- Coal down, continuing to be lower every month than in 2020. But no capacity change. Capacity factor again below 40%, making it 6 months of 2023 below 40%.

Month highlights:

Month Highlights
- Coal down significantly, and more capacity closed (-0.68GW)
- Natural gas generation up as usual, although capacity didn't grow much, and saw some steam turbine closure
- Solar generation was up on lot on the previous year, at 9.2TWh, and with Decermber normally being the low, could signal that in 2024 utility-scale solar generation will exceed 10TWh in all months.
- However, hydro was down, as was wind, so renewables in December were down compared to the previous year.
- In capacity, PV increased by a whopping 6.4GW, which I can only assume includes a massive data correction, and wind by 2.32GW.

Year Highlights:
- Coal generation saw a massive decline, dropping 18.8% down to 675TWh. Despite 8.5GW of capacity reduction, average capacity factor still dropped to only 41.8%
- Natural gas generation took up most of that reduciton, up 115TWh and contiuing CCGT capacity growth by 7GW, and with capacity factors continug to grow.
- PV capacity increaed by 18.44GW, and generation
- Wind capacity only increased by 6.24GW and the year wasn't very windy, with generation actually slightly lower than the previous year. Hopefully the worst is over for wind.
- Battery power capacity increased 6.4GW, an increase of over 2/3 and is forecast to increase significantly in 2024, overtaking pumped hydro as the biggest storage power capacity, although still behind in energy.
- Vogtle's new reactors finally opened, leading to nuclear generation being slightly up after years of slight decline.
