On every other car, the hood tends to be in a position that air flow through the radiator can put a pressure to push the hood open.
I suspect that the frUnk in both closed and half-closed states would have downward air pressure to keep it closed.
I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to, but the M3 has a two-stage locking latch. In fact, I had to bring mine to service because when I used the app to open the Frunk sometimes only the first latch would release (I could hear it), but the 2nd one wouldn't and it will still locked.
I think the two-stage he is referring to means you pull the hood lever and it pops up a bit, then you go up front and pull another lever and the hood opens.
On the Tesla, there are two latches, but they pull at the same time to open the hood.
