Why is this only available on new vehicles. When it uses the cameras?

UWB: ultra-wideband, a communication system transmitting high bandwidth data, over a short range, using minimal power. Think of bluetooth on steroids.

It’s the same technology Apple uses for precision finding with AirTags.

Using UWB, the car will be able to detect that your phone key is approaching the car and you stopped moving 2 feet behind the trunk so you probably want the trunk to open.

The regular BLE phone key does not have such precision.

I think its explained by a couple people in the thread, but ultra wide band does not have anything to do with the car camera system, so the answer to your initial question:

I use the Tessie app and tell Siri on my watch to open the trunk. Among other things. Does that count as hands free?
