Government mandated TPMS in all new cars as a fuel saving measure. Lower pressure than spec will cause increased fuel consumption and pollution.

Kind of strange that it would also be mandated for an EV.
It might not be mandated - I remember a while back my Lexus hybrid didn't have TPMS while the ICE version of the same car did. However EV manufacturers want their cars to go as far as possible on a single charge and just like ICE cars, under-inflated tires cause less efficiency (actually, EV drivers are more range conscious than ICE drivers, so even more of a reason to include TPMS to keep them happy).

Btw, if you don't like to pay for TPMS, just don't install it and disable it where possible.
