I am not sure of any of it. I just assume that:
#1: AWD could provide better regen than RWD
#2: The front motor design could be optimized for better efficiency as the rear motor handles more of the acceleration power (as weight bias shifts rearward during acceleration.)
I am sure gearing plays into it too, but I don't think it is the only factor to consider.

Yes exactly what I am trying to say. "Tesla patent documents suggest that the rear motor is tuned and geared for acceleration, while the front motor is tuned and geared for efficient highway cruising."
