Without the 8-10 billion dollars in annual tax breaks that the oil industry gets, people would be paying $8-9 per gallon of gas. Would you still call that a collateral benefit?

What about the fact that electric cars provide a far superior driving experience than gasoline cars? There are certain niche areas where gasoline cars are superior, but for every day usage for most people an electric car like the Model S wins hands down. Better and smoother acceleration, no stopping at gas stations, quieter, smoother ride (no changing of gears), more reliable. Longer range and somewhat cheaper are about the only benefits a gasoline car has.
