@ChrisE congrats, that must be very exciting after a long wait. Admittedly I haven't paid super-close attention, but everything I've seen through various EV publications (Tesleratti, Inside EVs, etc) and watched in YouTube videos seem to point to high-quality units rolling out of Giga Shanghai. I'm not sure what I'd do in your shoes but if you're in need of the car sooner than later, I'd probably go for it.

You could wait for a German-built vehicle but nobody knows for sure when those will actually start delivering. Plus, Shanghai has had more time to work out any production issues, so there's less likelihood of running into early-run issues like you might from Berlin.

Those are my 3,048m (10k-ft) thoughts. I'm sure you'll get some more thoughts here shortly though!

My Model Y reservation in Iceland is finally getting close and expected to be delivered in September. Should I accept the Shanghai Model or continue to wait for Berlin? Pros and cons!

Hello Chris!
I am in Rome, Italy. I've been debating this myself for quite some time now. I reserved my Model Y on the unveil day, and it looks like I should be able to take delivery by the end of August, if all goes well.

I decided not to wait. Berlin built Model Ys will be more advanced technologically for sure, as we all know. Structural Battery pack, single rear frame AND single from frame, and more.

But:
  • I hope not, but it looks delays for Giga Berlin keep happening. I am afraid we'd have to wait until late 2022, for one reason or another.
  • We will be the ones to deal with initial production issues.
  • Unlikely, but possible: we may end-up with structural battery packs that do not have 4680s inside.
  • Shanghai's Model Ys seem to be of very high quality - better than Fremont's - and they should be free from many initial production defects.
So, while you can't go wrong either way, in my opninon, I personally did not feel like waiting. :)

Many thanks.

Yes we are all super excited indeed and I´m not sure if I can argue strong enough at home to postpone ;). I´m at least picking up the wall charger on Monday so the process has started.

I agree with the built quality it seems to be quite good from all I read and as you pointed out the early production issues have probably be sorted out.

All the best from the North.

Hi Taym,

Many thanks for the points.

My initial concern was that if I take the shanghai Model that the next batch or two could be from Berlin but as read more on the production process I agree with you on the Berlin delay. It probably will not start to deliver in any volume until summer/fall in my opinion.

I´m leaning towards the September delivery ;)

All the best.

Hi Taym, Have you received a delivery date yet?

Hi Chris!

No delivery date yet. I have just been called by Tesla and got OK'd to wire my down-payment. Not sure how payment and financing options work over there, but I was asked to wait for all paperwork to complete after my financing plan had been approved last month. I proceeded with the down-payment, and it is my understanding that once that is in their systems, they'll share my VIN and delivery date. I know (unofficially) that I already have a VIN assigned, so I suppose I'll soon be given a delivery date as well.
We'll see.

What about u? Have you confirmed your order? :)

Not yet confirmed but see my VIN. I spoke to Tesla and they are seeing the first cars arriving in Iceland beginning of September. I´m still back and forth. See Berlin could start in October, of course in super low, volume. Let´s put it that way if I would be able to know with certainty that MIG would arrive Q1/22 I would take that one. I would say I´m at 60% probability to take the MIC. The wall charger was installed yesterday. Will at least come of use charging my Mini Plug In ;)

Wow! That is soon! Am I understanding correctly, they informed you your car will be delivered thursday/friday, if you decide to accept the order?
Good for you Chris. :)

No news on this side of EU. Still waiting.
Yes decided to to bite the bullet after too much thought on MIC vs MIG ;) and confirmed delivery Thursday PM. It´s Tesla and I could always be waiting for new Tech, upgrades etc. Will look at the show car on Wednesday. They told me I was one of the lucky ones as I´m in the first shipment with only few cars next week. Hundreds will then arrive mid Sept.

Congratulations then! :)

I really hope to have mine delivered next week or the one after. From Zeebrugge (BE) to Rome (IT) my Model Y is travelling on a truck, but in few days it should be here. It maybe already is.

Hello,

My Model Y reservation in Iceland is finally getting close and expected to be delivered in September. Should I accept the Shanghai Model or continue to wait for Berlin? Pros and cons!
Hi, same dilemma here. Mine is practically here (Belgium) I have been asked to provide the needed docs, transfer the money and agree a delivery date. I have been told that I also have the option to wait for the one produced in Germany, no issue at all.

i agree with the pro and cons listed above. The model Y with 4680 batteries and structural battery pack from Germany would definitely be a winner, but it is not clear when it will be finally produced, possibly 2022. Moreover, as already noted by other users in this thread, there may be some youth issues linked with the new plant production process. Additionally, the production in Germany may start anyway with 2170 batteries.

on the flip side, the MIC model Y imported now in EU are coming with 5C LG chem batteries of 75kwh capacity. In Q4 2022 the production should already shift to the 5L version of 82kwh. The big break should happen anyway with the 4680 and structural pack. This solution would allow to have more energy density but, most importantly, to save significant weight, which would result in extended range and handling.

Elon Musk announced a county fair and factory tour in Brandenburg on 9 October. Most likely he is confident to start the production of mod Y in that period.

And today the news: the original Model Y assigned to me (VIN1 from the page source code) was part of a lot of Model Ys that Tesla has re-destined to the local Chinese market. So, while I had the cargo ship right, it was never on it!

This change was reflected in the VIN change I noticed at some point. My current VIN (still from source code, but today confirmed by my Tesla Delivery Specialist) is on it's way in some other Cargo Ship.

My guess is that it's either the Lake Geneva, or the SFL Conductor. Still working to determine which one.
Delivery expected between 10 and 15 of September.

Mine (in Switzerland) is scheduled for delivery in less than 48 hours (Friday morning on the 27th) :)
Impatient.....
Wow I know the feeling ;).

Tesla called this morning and speeded up the delivery to today. Happened almost too fast, going from undecided couple of weeks ago and wanted to evaluate in September whether or not to go for it to have the car in my driveway.

So here is the Northern most Model Y on the planet (at least currently haha ;). Should I call it Winterfell :)!!? My son was almost as happy as myself. This car is amazing to say least.
