Nissan Postpones Launch Of 60-kWh LEAF e-Plus

Due to the issues surrounding Carlos Ghosn, Nissan will delay the launch.

The higher-performance, longer-range LEAF was expected soon, but Nissan now says it will delay the launch until this Ghosn issue is cleared up.

According to the latest news, the longer-range Nissan LEAF (with a 60 kWh battery), which was expected to be launched a year after the introduction of the base second-generation LEAF with 40 kWh battery, is postponed.

The reasons behind the postponement are the allegations and arrest of Carlos Ghosn, who led Nissan (for years as CEO and most recently as Chairman of the Board). Ghosn is seen as the father of Nissan LEAF, which was introduced in 2010. This postponement could be an in-your-face move to shun Ghosn one last time.

“While the automakers have stressed that operations and business are proceeding as normal, Nissan has postponed the launch of its high-performance Leaf electric car “to ensure that this important product unveiling could receive the coverage it merits”, a Nissan spokesman said.”

“Nissan called off the launch of a high-performance Leaf electric car, cancelling Nov. 28 events in Yokohama and Amsterdam.”

It’s totally understandable that for Nissan the situation right now is not comfortable to launch a new LEAF version, but we sure hope this postponement doesn’t last long.

The highly anticipated 60-kWh LEAF would surely revive electric car sales for the brand here in the U.S. where it’s struggle of late due to increasingly stiff competition.

Can you imagine how few car owners can name the chairman or CEO of the company that made their car. This is just an excuse to postpone a longer range, faster Nissan Leaf. More than a year ago, Nissan in the U.S. shifted more production to pickups and SUVs to take advantage of low gas prices. Postponing the 60 kWh Leaf, which apparently is already in production, is a bad idea -- not good for consumers or the environment.

I don't know what Ghosn did or whose "sides" all the players are "on", but this whole attack stinks of anti-improvement politics.

I got into thinking about recent politics of this nature, and realize that there's so many secrets that I can't figure it out. Let's see if sunshine can set us free here regardless.

Want to start a poll here how many people know the name of the CEO of the company which made their EV - namely the Roadster, Model S, Model X, or Model 3? ;)

Yeah - EV drivers are especially disinterested in who runs the company. Tesla drivers even more so...

Hmm, something about a high performance LEAF live streamed press conference this afternoon around 5pm Pacific. What could it be? I included a link to the live stream in my article below.

Nissan’s mysterious live PR event today for a “high performance LEAF”

Nissan’s Japanese language twitter account, but none of their other regional twitter accounts, posted a link for a live YouTube stream set for this afternoon to carry a press conference about a “high performance” model of the LEAF.

The time is apparently set for 5pm Pacific, although clicking the link to the video indicates the stream could start a bit earlier.
