I had a paint protection film installed on my Model S in late 2015. Recently had an accident where instead of rewrapping the new replacement parts I tore off all the film from the car. As expected, not one scratch under the film (58k kms of HK roads/parking lots). For me it's not a show car so I don't mind the obviously yelllowed/dirty colour of the film (the below pic is unwashed, after washing the film is less brown/yellowish but obviously not pure pearl white like the original paint). I've decided to just drive the car without any protection film now and just do a repaint/3M wrap when I want to sell it (or give next buyer a discount).
For impact resistance, it's good enough for minor scrapes:
