Selling car from a distance ...

I need to sell my car ... but I am not where it is. And will not be for weeks.

A neighbor is happy to let prospective buyers test drive it but when it comes to actually performing the transaction, I do not (even) know how to go about it BUT how do I do it when not there.

Do I need to be there?

Is there some paperwork I need to fill out in advance for the purchaser?

Like title transfer? There is no loan on the car.

(I did sell a car 10 years ago in a different state but cannot even remember HOW I did it even though it was in person.)
Could I leave it with a Carmax type shop? But what if it didn't sell for months?

Probably also depends on how comfortable the buyer is with dealing with absent owner. At the end of the day, as long as you get the money and they get the car and title it's just like a private party transaction. Check on taxes for the state the sale is being done in. The dmv site also helps with information about how to do a private party sale properly.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
