The reason SpaceX built the ASDS robot was explained by Elon that during rough seas the booster can slide around the deck. The robot will secure a booster in rough seas.

Elon said they would have lost one booster if the ASDS didn't have a guard rail. The guard rail is easily seen in ecarfan's picture.
