Stuck J1772 Adapter and How Resolved

A friend of mine who owns a M3 (I have a MY) had his J1772 adapter get stuck in his vehicle’s charge port when trying to charge a day or so ago. He released it using the manual release but was confounded by what had taken place.

He experimented and went back to the same charger location (LI NY, ChargePoint). Here’s what he wrote me:

"Went back to the same set of chargers to try again. It was busy there and I managed to get a defective charger again (probably same one as before). The J1772 got locked in the port again. So rather than manually unlocking it, I just moved over to another available charger. Plugged it into the adaptor and it worked perfectly. At completion, I unplugged the charger and the J1772 came out with it. It seems that if you plug the adaptor into the port by itself, the charge port will not unlock; it needs to be attached to a working charger to unlock; at least that's my theory."

Thought the M3 forum might want to know.

I always plug the J-1772 into the adapter and then insert the adapter into the charge port. When removing, I grasp the adapter with one hand, to hold it on the the J-1772 plug, then press the release button on the J-1772 with the other hand and withdraw both from the charge port. Then remove the adapter from the J-1772. Never had a problem in 6 years of use on a 2013 Model S and now a 2021 Model Y. A side note, I used a label maker to put my cell number on my adapter, just in case I forget to remove it from the J-1772. I found one left at a charger once, with no way to contact the owner.

The release button on the J1772 handle probably sends an unlock message through the protocol, the car probably understands that and unlocks its latch that holds on to the adapter in the car. How could the car know when it should release its latch otherwise. It's normal that the adapter stays locked if you don't use that button while the J1772 plug is still connected to the car.
You can use the port unlock command on the car'S screen, or in the mobile application, in other situations. No need to use the little rope in the trunk.

I also ordered this gizmo from Amazon to lock the adapter in place until I want it to separate:

Tesla Model 3/Y Charger Lock for J1772 Adapter (Works with Non Flange Adapter, Not Work with Model S/X) (Black)[2PACK]

$14 bucks for two.

If you have access to a 3D printer, you can print your own. I printed this one and it works great...

Thanks! I was looking for one to print. I use the wallbox pulsar plus with the adapter and was just wondering about this.
