Tax credits

Have encountered a few Tesla owners who say they've taken tax credits in 2015 for vehicles delivered in 2016/tax credits in 2016 for vehicles delivered in 2017.

Curious if anyone has encountered this situation. Or if anyone out there is being offered, say, January 2018 delivery but with a December 2017 title transfer on the supposition they'll be able to take a 2017 tax credit.

The IRS regs say 'put into service' for when you can take the credit. If you want to pay for the car (in full to Tesla) to get the title 'overlapping' years like that, up to you.

A better course of action is to do it 'the right way' and just decrease withholding for the 'right year' so you get the 7500 over the 12 months with 650 a month in extra cash. Not as satisfying, perhaps, but better to have the car in hand before you pay for it, I think!
