Tesla will bring back free trials of its Autopilot system as soon as next month, CEO Elon Musk said this week at the company’s annual shareholders meeting.
What’s more, Musk said he’s been personally testing an upcoming version of the software that he says is a “significant improvement” of the system.
In particularly, he noted improvement in Autopilot’s ability navigating on-ramps and off-ramps. “I was able to able to drive last night, going from highway on-ramp to highway off-ramp using the simplified version of the control system,” Musk said. “And I think with some further effort, we can get that out in the next couple months.”
Musk was said a range of improvements will be coming to the system over the next 6-12 months.
“What you’ll see is that the reliability and capability of Autopilot will increase exponentially…The improvements are very, very rapid,” he said.
Tesla owners have reported meaningful improvements to the Autopilot system this year, particularly in navigating in poor weather conditions or on unmarked roads. Hopefully, it’s a sign that the company is closer to fulfilling it’s promise of a coast-to-coast autonomous drive, which it originally planned to do by the end of 2017.
When asked in February about the timeline for the coast-to-coast drive, Musk said it might happen in three months, or “six months at the outside.” If Tesla holds to that timeline, it would make sense that some big improvements are coming soon.
