Try this, there are 4 black knob stud looking pieces inside the lift gate trunk jam. Two at the top on each side and two on the bottom. They are adjustable closing stops that control how far the lift gate closes against the weatherstrip. If you have water leaking inside from the top of the lift gate, turn each of the two top studs a half turn to the right as if you are tightening a screw. This will cause the upper part of the lift gate to close more tightly against the upper part of the weatherstrip. The bottom two black studs control the lower part of the lift gate. Try this and if you still notice water leaking inside, turn the same two black studs another 1/2 turn to the right to tighten it more. With the right adjustment, the weatherstrip will seal against the lift gate as it should. BWade, VA 2023 MYLR.
