WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

This squares with what the Service Manager told me. At the time of the event, TACC was functioning correctly. Had my distance been set higher than two, he said I'd likely have avoided the collision (i literally needed an extra foot). Extrapolating from this, it seems obvious that depending...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

New Embarrassing (to me) Information from the logs I received a phone call an hour ago from my Tesla Service manager who told me the following: My car had been traveling at approximately 40 MPH when it engaged the AEB. He told me that the engineers determined that the car in front of must have...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

Sorry, but at this stage i can't even begin to remember how soon before the accident any car (s) swiched lanes in front of me. At this stage it would be fruitless to speculate on anything based on my recollections of the event. I have asked the Service Manager for any data from the logs that...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

i want to reiterate here that i tried my damndest to stop the car. As i've repeated numerous times on this thread (and you can choose to believe me or not) the system had been working flawlessly, and according to TM i didn't disconnect AP or TACC inadvertantly. When i saw a collison was...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

i do want to reiterate how frustating it was to speak to TM service manager. There was no curiosity on his part as to what may have gone wrong. To be honest, he was kind of a prick. He kept referring to "our car," as in "our car" performed like it was supposed to. I reminded him the car belonged...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

the biggest frustration i had with Tesla's service manager, besides his repeating over-and-over that i bore all responsibility for the accident (i never once claimed otherwise and at one point i asked him not to keep saying it), was his unwillingness to speculate why, in theory, the car...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

Log Results The service manager at Tesla informed me that the engineers who analyzed the logs from my car found no anomaly: the TACC performed as designed. The system triggered the emergency alarm when the collision was imminent, and the driver (me) applied the brakes after approximately one...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

Still waiting for the information from Tesla concerning the "accident" (and I do consider it an "accident" because I certainly didn't hit the poor schmuck ahead of me on purpose). But please permit me to add a little color commentary to the unfortunate event: A typical commute to Chicago on...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

I spoke with my local service manager about ten minutes ago who told me, "the engineers" were still analyzing the logs. Sorry if some people think my warning was irresponsible or rash , or an attempt to extort money from Tesla or to "hide a ding" from my geriatric father (ah, if only i were so...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

I appreciate all the kind comments and posts. I don't take personally any critique of my catlike reflexes or of my wanton disregard for caution. And even though I'm certain I overestimate most of my abilities, I'm fairly certain I fall within the norm (or slightly below the norm in terms of...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

i'm embarassed to admit that i largely ignored the AP warnings in the manual as mere legalese. My DS asked me where i wanted to set the distance between cars. I said "2." He gave me no warnings or cautions (i don't blame him). I'm sure my first experiences with AP were similar to everyone else...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

i see your point. I think i was trying to say that i couldn't do anything ONCE i realized the car wouldn't stop. If i had used more caution (and more distance/time), it sounds probable I'd have avoided the accident. Had i had read something like this string (i haven't perused this site since...

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

This is sage advice. It was definitely a bad idea to set my distance at 2 for highway driving. I was too cavalier, too starstruck and trusting of the technology. It simply never ocurred to me that the car would fail to stop. That was foolish.

WARNING: I rear-ended someone today while using Auto Pilot in my brand new P90D!

Thanks. I completely agree. I initially hesitated to even post about my accident, but I felt kind of a moral duty. Hopefully, if there is a legitimate problem, it can be fixed, and I can post only about how much I love my P90D.
