It's pretty wild how variable this seems to be from person to person. I guess it is "only" $100 in the grand scheme of things, but i wouldn't mind having an extra $100 to spend on accessories and what not instead of having to pay an extra $100 into the purchase price.

Huh? This is the model 3 forum and the observation has nothing to do with the truck. It is well known that the $100 order fee (for model 3) is non-refundable. Perhaps you are replying to the wrong thread?

I wonder if this might have to do with state law. In California a non-refundable deposit is illegal. So maybe they got around that by just turning into a fee. In states where a non-refundable deposit is legal then they keep it as a deposit? I don't know about the law in your state, but...
