Tesla needs to refresh the Model S, asap.

M5 is definitely a nice car, but still a very significant 1/2 second behind. A demon is closer in 0-60, but takes an hour to setup to run.

Frustrated finding wheel bearing part (1027170-00-a)

FYI the new version of the rear wheel bearing assembly has a very slightly different inset. Presumably this is within tolerances of the CV, but I needed to replace both left and right to get the thrust angle alignment true.

Memory corruption issues in 18.42.2 on MCU1 cars?

I have seen the missing letters several times - reboot always fixes it for at least a few days if not a full week. I was talking to support about some dead supercharger pedestals last week and mentioned the corrupt font - they were already aware of the firmware glitch in 2018.48.

On android, I get the "almost complete" notification, but never a 100% complete notification.

good to know. Will need 1/3 mile to "walk off" some home made pasta ;-)

In four months I've never received a software update? Anything I can do?

I have had 10 updates in the past 11 months - you definitely have something stuck. Call support, they can read the log for the reason and mayby reset the account to retry again. Worst case, take it in for service and they will bring it up-to-date.

    Idle fee at empty Supercharger?

I got that email too that they were waiving my first idling fee (even though I was the only car in 8 stalls). Not sure if it was a bug in the email notification program. >50% occupancy is very rare here in the east, so was wasnt too worried about it.

    Battery Fire Discussion

I bet they jacked up the car under the battery pack and shorted out the pack. Its going to spark FUD about tesla fire hazards, but just as no one would jack a ICE car up by the gas tank, they should reasonably know not to jack up an E/V by the battery.

Anthony Levandowski beats Tesla's Elon Musk to first Auto Cross country (3k Miles, 0 disengagement)

I dont see how this is much better than my AP1 S that drove 5,415 of the 5730 (>95%) in our summer road trip. I can count on one hand the number of disengagements that were not directly for rests or refuels stops.

    Staged or real?

I commented that exact same thing on the youtube version. No way this is real.
  13. morrisdl

    Catastrophic battery pack failure

The S was designed for rapid battery pack swaps. There are youtube videos where Tesla demonstrated swapping two tesla S with fresh charged battery packs faster than an Audi could refuel. Shouldnt be a big deal.
  14. morrisdl

    Catastrophic battery pack failure

1 year (from time of replacement) warranty on replacement parts. If you had a replacement pack installed in your last year of 8 year warranty, this would extend the warranty.

Public attention in the Model S?

I always get asked the 'wrong question': How long does that thing take to charge up? Fun answer is about 3 seconds to plug it in at home and never go to a gas station again. The real answer is not what they wanted to know anyway: "duration depends on current SOC, charger voltage/amperage...

    Dulles Airport EV Charging

There are plenty of Nema 5-20 outlets in Dulles lot 1. Even with my 5-15 plug I pulled 11amps and added 1 kWh/hour. presumably would be fully charged in 3 days. I can confirm the Airport Marriott also has a 110v outlet near the basketball courts, but I couldnt reach it with my Gen1 UMC...

    Gen 1 NEMA 10-30 & 14-30 adapters - $75 for both, or $40 for 1

AGREED - I try to mention E/V in every online review and anytime I see a hotel manager. Sadly (for Marriott Platinum Members), Hyatt seems to be doing the best job with building out destination chargers of the big three hotel chains.

    Gen 1 NEMA 10-30 & 14-30 adapters - $75 for both, or $40 for 1

I would like a 1st gen 5-20 as well. A few Marriott seem to think 5-20 is "the standard" for E/V charging.

How to confirm Auto Pilot on a Used Car

H/W is the easiest tell. It is always possible that the car has the ability, but the original owner didnt pay to unlock the software option. For AP1, I think it was only $500 to unlock the software. AP2 is much more.

I'm about to join the Tesla family! CPO Unicorn S P100DL?

You have 3 forum posts ever and they are ALL this same sob story that it "might take 6 months"...if you spent 1/2 as much time trying to find the part, you might already be back in your car. Sorry for your accident, but be THANKFUL you are driving one of the safest cars on the road and still...

How reliable is your Model S?

from odo 50k to 70k, I have replaced the motor (under warranty) due to noise, and both left wheel bearings. Still WAY more reliable than the Porsche Cayenne turbo it replaced. There are VAST differences between Tesla service centers. I have been to a few and one blew-me-away and another was...

Door handle squeaky noise when retracting

It wasn't bad to fix my wife's squeak. Didn't have to remove the handle, just loosened it, re-centered it, and re-tightened. Under an hour total and way less time than going to service center. AND the service center doesn't reward you with a beer for fixing the car! That Rich-Rebuilds video...

    Which charges faster

They might just be referring to the miles-per-hour charging rate. At 235V/40A, the M3 gets 34 miles/hr rate, compared to my MX which was getting 24 miles/hr. The 3 is just a lighter more efficient vehicle and gets more miles per kWh.

    Upcoming Cross-Country Trip

We did 5,700 miles this past summer in P85 and never NEEDED the mobile cable, but its good insurance. Actually used the J1772 connector twice just to get premium parking spot. A DC fridge (Dometic CFX-35) is game changer!! Finding hotels with e/v charging is key - we used www.plugshare.com...

    Driver Assist Options Stop Working

I have seen this message twice on my S with same software rev. I figured it was a leaf or something on a sensor, but somewhat glad its just a s/w fix.

Electrify America Fast Chargers - Huh?

WOW This is crappy for future VW/Audi/Porsche EV buyers....really unfortunate. I'll 2nd the notion of Tesla selling CCS & CHAdeMO adapters. Undercut EA rates AND use the revenue to build out more charger and bring back free supercharging for new Teslas. Would be a win/win PR campaign!

    Roanoke VA to Haymarket VA

Thanks! I can get all the way to Ashburn with 5-10% to spare going Rt29. By code in NO.VA, all new construction has a 220v outlet in the garage so now problems destination charging at my Brother's, but its always nice to have more options.

WTB: Roof Rack for Model S

Frustrated finding wheel bearing part (1027170-00-a)

YES - complete integrated hub. Tesla S bearings @ $130 was a good deal, $230 is a bit high. My Land rover and Cayenne wheel bearings cost between: $120-180 in the past. I would agree about shopping around, but it took 13 phone calls and 30+ minutes on hold for me to get this one!

Frustrated finding wheel bearing part (1027170-00-a)

I Called 3 Tesla Parts departments and left over a dozen voicemails asking for a call back (included part number, vin, and phone number) and ZERO call backs. Frustrated, I ordered one on ebay, correct part number but it has the wrong spline shaft diameter. The only way I could get through to...

foolhardy, foolish or just fine.. coast to coast road trip

I would also add that the Tesla service center folks will often jump though hoops if you mention that you are on a cross-county trek. When bought mine used from private party in Dallas, the Tesla service center there took me in as a walk in and sorted out my AP before my 1,300 mile drive home...

Or the 80's... KITT just needed a few more switches!

Disappointing - Car still doesn't "avoid collisions" even with V9.0.

I too would like to see the AP logic consider proximity sensor data and cheat to the other side of the lane.

Has anyone been to a full Supercharging station?

Probably at one point, but I dont think so now. TeslaFi and some other tools could answer this scientifically, but doesn't have a metric/portlet specifically by location. Based on the portlets that do list location, CA is not >50% of the cars listed. Of the 2,800 cars on TeslaFi, CA is approx...

Has anyone been to a full Supercharging station?

60+ SC visited this year (NY, NJ, PA, OH, VA, MD, WV, TN, KS, CO, UT, NV, AZ, OK, TX, AK, MO, and MI)...never more than 50% full. Most were empty. Didnt see a single Tesla over 3 days in Page AZ. I hope you CA folks figure out how to handle the eventual SC congestion - thank you!
  45. morrisdl

Who would give up free supercharging?

Agreed, that FREE supercharging 's real $ value is way over estimated by our human emotions. I also think lifetime (of the car) supercharging helps prop up used car prices. We finally did a 5,700 mile cross country road trip this summer because it was "FREE"! Average stop time was 30min...

Modifications to car made since delivery

I havnt done the Tesla (yet), butI I have baked my Land Rover headlights at least 5 times with no issue. 20 min at 200'f and it peels open. If not, put it and and let it back a few minutes longer and try again. Get a IR thermometer to monitor if you like. Worst case - You can only screw up...
