How accurate (relative to other batteries) is the stated range when full?

Tesla uses an EPA formula for converting kWh to range. For estimating purposes, I've found that a good rule of thumb is that battery miles equate to driving at 60 mph on a flat, level interstate with no wind and an outside temperature of 70 F. If you haven't discovered it already, check out the...

    Death of a reservation holder

Technically, your wife's grandfather's reservation and the deposit he paid belongs to his estate. The executor of his Will probably will need to be involved, and Tesla may require it.

Inferior Slacker Reception When Using Your Own Slacker Account

I noticed that one of the recent firmware updates eliminated the checkbox which allows high resolution audio when using your own paid Slacker account. (The checkbox used to appear next to the sign-in button at the bottom of the Slacker window.) It seems that this high resolution setting is now...

Brake pedal play / rattle when lifting off pedal...

My (former) Feb 2013 build P85 had a related issue. When slipping my foot off the pedal, allowing it to spring back to its rest position, it made the sound of a plastic hammer striking and bouncing on an anvil. On the 2016 cars, Tesla has eliminated this problem (with a proper rubber bumper) as...

An Update to our Supercharging Program

I think this is a good move for Tesla. The charging revenue will enable them to build many more Supercharger stations. This will be particularly important when the Model 3 hits the road. Another big-picture benefit of this change is that it will encourage other companies to get into the...

Supercharging to become limited for new cars

I think this is generally a good move for Tesla. The charging revenue will enable them to build many more Supercharger stations. This will be particularly important when the Model 3 hits the road. Another big-picture benefit of this change is that it will encourage other companies to get into...

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

I'm no expert. Just passing along the information I received. Where did you find out about the 93% level for auto-balancing?
  10. ToddRLockwood

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

Good question. Charging beyond 80% when needed would certainly make sense, although I try to avoid 100% charges altogether. We have enough Supercharger locations in New England that it's rarely necessary to charge beyond 80%. And as my previous post mentions, it's better for the battery and more...

    Firmware 8.0

I once heard that Tesla gives priority to cars connected via WIFI, because it's a faster data transfer and probably saves Tesla some money versus sending it out via cell data network.

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

I traded up to a 2016 90D this summer, and with a brand new battery I was inspired to dig into the charging question again. There is surprisingly little official information about the "ideal" daily charge level for long battery life. So I consulted an expert I know inside Tesla, as well as an...

Supercharger congestion - a modest proposal

On a technical note, it would make more sense to charge based on energy delivered, not the charging time, since the charging rate is not always the same. This is how ChargePoint operates. Tesla spent a good deal of time studying driving habits of both electric and gasoline car owners before...

Supercharger congestion - a modest proposal

Sounds like somebody messed up, or there's a glitch in the system that identifies possible abusers. As an early Model S owner, I can attest that Tesla understated the Supercharger usage rules when the charging stations first appeared. Perhaps they hadn't recognized the problem yet. Their...

Supercharger congestion - a modest proposal

Last fall, I spoke at length with a member of the supercharger team about this. The warning emails are not generated by an automated system. There are human beings involved, and as I mentioned previously, there is not a specific formula used. Apparently, frequency is a bigger factor than...

Supercharger congestion - a modest proposal

Tesla has stated for some time that Superchargers are intended for long-distance travel, not for daily local charging. While Tesla does not use a specific formula to identify drivers who overuse the Superchargers, they will notify owners who use a Supercharger on a daily basis who could just as...

    Supercharger - Burlington VT

I tried the South Burlington Supercharger today, just to see what sort of speed we're getting out of it. My battery was fully warmed up with a SOC of 60 miles when I plugged in. The Supercharger peaked out at 330mi/hr. Not bad! My car was the only one there.

Glad you're enjoying your weekend in Burlington! It's a fun town. Last night I saw Joe Bonamassa's band perform at the Flynn Theater. New no-parking signs have been added on the restricted side of the Healthy Living Supercharger station. This appears to have reduced the number of ICE vehicles parked on that side, although there are still some. Eli and I have further plans in the works to help educate Healthy Living customers.

Seeking Alpha Jan 4 Tesla analysis - very negative article

There are some perks for the business, such as having their name displayed in the Supercharger listings, not just the address. And it also sends a great message. Supercharger - Burlington VT

Healthy Living is actually a big proponent of electric cars. They were one of the first Burlington businesses to install level 2 chargers and even put in solar to power them. They are also one of the first businesses in the U.S. to pay for the energy used by a Supercharger station. The...

I'm sorry to have been away from this discussion for a while, but I have been working on this. I contacted the owners when I began to see the 4 Tesla-only slots getting ICE'd. Disappointed with range estimate in first long term drive

You did not indicate whether you started your trip with a cold battery. If the battery is cold when you start off, the battery heater will use roughly the same amount of energy as the drive motors do for the first half-hour of your trip. If you add the cabin heater load, you can understand why...

Wonder of wonders - an actual Tesla advertisement!

I believe you totally nailed it here. No different than the video production companies that have produced elaborate spec television commercials "for Tesla," no doubt in hopes of getting some business from them. Tesla even posted one of those commercials on its web site, but more as an enthusiast...

HVAC in cold temps not cutting it

As mentioned in the above post, Range Mode could be the likely the culprit because it will limit the fan speed. I've driven my car at below zero F temps many times. I do find that I have to break out of HVAC Auto mode to get the windows to clear completely. Here's my suggestion: open the HVAC...

Will Lightning Bikes use Tesla's Superchargers and HPWCs?

A key design element in the Supercharger system is the data link between the vehicle and the on-site charger bank. (The Tesla's onboard charger is not used when supercharging.) The Supercharger controls charge rate and battery heating/cooling to keep the pack in a safe temperature range while...

Putting exterior ez-pass onto front of car without drilling

It's due to the UV filtering in the windshield. There is a small area to the right of the mirror mount where there is no UV filtering. Unfortunately, it's not large enough to work reliably with the EZ-Pass.

Winter tires Size and Wheels Questions

I highly recommend going with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 245/45R19 tires. This is by far the best snow tire I've experienced, and it's rated for the weight of the Model S. Tesla's 19-inch wheels (either the standard or turbine version) will work fine and will insure that your car is more marketable...

Audi Commits To Nationwide 150 kW Fast Charge Network In U.S.

I predict that these fast chargers will be located primarily at Audi dealerships—not the ideal location for a highway stop in terms of food and other services. Anyone aware of Powerwall's share of TSLA revenue?

I think it might be a tad early to be asking this question. Is the Gigafactory actually producing cells yet? I know they are assembling complete packs, but currently the cells may still be coming from Panasonic.

    Random Model S sightings

Nope. Close, but no cigar. Wrong logo on the back of the car, and Tesla's optional spoiler does not have a gap under it. Center brake light is not in that location. Similar tail lights, though.

How well does AP work for you?

It's important to remember that this poll is a snapshot of a constantly evolving technology. Even without a firmware update, Tesla's Autopilot is getting smarter every day, and all the cars on the road benefit from that collective learning.

Improvised parking signs for two space parkers

This only tells half of the story. There are also the inconsiderate people who wing their doors into cars parked next to them without a second thought. When parking my Model S, I have always taken the approach of "parking in the next county," well away from other cars. It requires a bit more...
