Private European group wants to send 2 rovers to the moon on a Falcon 9 in 2018

Dave Jones, an EEng who runs EEVBlog on YouTube here in Oz had a few interviews with an engineer on the project last year. Extremely interesting stuff about the electronics, if you're into that, and they even had a prototype rover in his lab. Haven't watched them for a while but I seem to...

    New Toyota EV company launched

I think part of Toyota's (and Honda) push for fuel cell EVs is tied into the upcoming 2020 Olympics. The Japanese government, as I understand it, is throwing bucket loads of money into hydrogen infrastructure and HFCV subsidies for a PR showcase at the Olympics in Japan in 2020 however I think...

Bosch invents new electric car battery to double mileage

Just note, the cell still has an electrolyte. Just not a liquid one. I guess if Bosch acquired them last year then there maybe something more than vaporware here as their team member list looks pretty impressive. Hopefully they can pull something off in the not-too-distant future as my brain...

    18650 Winding Speed

I remember watching a video a few years back (can't remember if it was at a Panasonic factory) which showed the winding of a 18650 cell. There were dozens of machines in a line doing the same task. For each cell, it was all over in a few seconds. The assembly of each cell was very quick however...

    Audi A9 e-tron production confirmed

Interesting piece I found in the article was their choice of motor. Looks like AC induction (like Tesla) for this car - if it indeed arrives at some stage. "Knirsch said: “Some rivals have gone for a synchronous motor with a high power density but at relatively low revs. There are also...

Suddenly, the car is jamming AM radio stations.

I'm not sure if this helps but in my line of work (industrial electrical) AM radio interference certainly occurs when variable speed drive motor cables are not screened, or incorrectly screened. And the term 'screen' is different to 'earthing' and not to be confused with each other. Shielding is...

SpaceX has a new launch option: 4 metric tons of cargo to Mars

I guess if you have the finances to build a Mars probe and lander it may not be a real stretch now to upsize the payload and stick it top of the Facon heavy in a couple years. 12900kgs capacity would get you some nice toys to play with on the planet. SpaceX are now advertising 2900kg to Pluto...

The first electric car I ever experienced

For those interested, I saw a while back on the jay Leno YouTube channel that he is restoring an old Detroit electric of similar vintage to the Baker. I think the Detroit also may have used the Edison nickel iron batteries at some stage in its production life. His Detroit is getting a slight...

Nissan Leaf sales down despite availability of new 30kW battery

To me, those that actively look for a pure EV are a bit more savvy and know what's around now and what is coming around the corner. There's too much info on the web, many EV manufacturer specific enthusiasts forums (like TMC) around for those not to know. As we all know, there's a new 60kWh...

Sorry this is a big step backwards, even for mobile devices, unless I turn my display/monitor 90 degrees to portrait mode. Now my scroll wheel is doing overtime. Hyundai to Launch 2016 Midsize BEV Powered By Next-Gen LG Chem Batteries

You'd think so though I guess it is limited because the car is designed primarily with an ICE in mind so the architecture most likely wouldn't suit a much larger battery. To jam a 28kWh battery into it is somewhat impressive when looking at it this way. I do wonder if they're gauging the...

    Tesla Pickup Truck

Hyundai to Launch 2016 Midsize BEV Powered By Next-Gen LG Chem Batteries

The more I think about it the more the lower range value becomes believable. You really can't have a car designed primarily with an ICE in mind to be able to fit in a 50kWh+ sized battery when needed. So are we looking at closer to a 30kWh capacity perhaps!

    Model 3 Feature Requests

My feature request is have limited features (well at first at least). Bring them in later model years. All these extra features add huge R&D costs, push out the development time-frame, and become a warranty nightmare if and when they fail. Back to basics IMO is the only way the model 3 can...

Hyundai to Launch 2016 Midsize BEV Powered By Next-Gen LG Chem Batteries

I'm (mildly) optimistic of around a true 150 miles. The 'intewebs' is assuming a potential near 10kWh battery for the PHEV (similar to the Sonata PHEV) for which they claim 32miles electric range. If we follow the pattern we are looking at around a possible 50kWh battery for the BEV version so...

    Washington Post reviews autopilot

I thought the article was pretty positive actually. And I've obviously read the 'signature' thing differently to some here. How Clean is Your Electric Vehicle?

I'm lost. I feel this 'Clean' terminology has lost its meaning over the last few years and used inappropriately. I don't remember 'clean' as low CO2 emissions as dictated by that website (and many others). I remember a 'clean' vehicle as having clean emissions (i.e. low NOX) to reduce smog. CO2...

Chevy Bolt - 200 mile range for $30k base price (after incentive)

Chevy Bolt - 200 mile range for $30k base price (after incentive)

It was mentioned by GM in one of their Powerpoint presentations a short while back. I don't think LG were too happy with GM releasing that info for both public and competitor consumption. So I guess the real total cell value within the Bolt's battery is $145 x 60 = $8700. Adding the cost of...

When will 100+ KWh battery become available?

Someone told me ages ago that the last digit (zero) meant it was a cylinder so I've been telling people that ever since. Tesla SpaceX many comparisons

I have wondered that myself but as I think about it - perhaps physical size (not mass) of the payload might come into play more so. At this stage I want the most basic model (safety, a couple of battery options and a AWD option maybe) and wish for Tesla to concentrate on that version - to get the car to the market as soon as they can. Otherwise they'll spend precious time and R&D on high-end features for Founder and...
