Finally! Dynamic Power Management for wall connector

Ah. Yes, of course <*slaps forehead*>. Fairly obvious, now that you say it. Thanks for being gentle. 😃 I guess these boxes have a more generic monitor function for non-Tesla applications? With the latency question in mind, what good is the WiFi-only connection? And: does the Tesla version...

Finally! Dynamic Power Management for wall connector

I’m just getting started looking at this, very intrigued. One thing I’m scratching my head about: Why do I need a wired data connection? These Neurio boxes appear to have WiFi capability; and the Wall Connector certainly does. Why require another hardwire? Trivial enough to run a #22 wire...

Re-sizing the factory phone charger (2020 MS)

Has anyone doctored their phone charger to accept a phone in a "thick" case (Otterbox, etc.)? My new phone charges fine on the wireless pad I use on my nightstand with the cover on; and it worked fine in the car before I got the cover; so I assume it would be fine, electrically, with the car's...

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

Wow, you're right. That's a change (not for the better) from what used to be in there. As @zoomer0056 said, the app has the details if you hover on a specific day....

What should my ideal charge percentage be?

You can see the amount you charged in the app, or on your account page on tesla.com....

Quality at home charging, are charge ports really needed to be installed at home?

You realize that the 6-50R is not the same as the 14-50 as has been discussed up to now, yes? Your Tesla doesn't need the neutral wire, so either one will work (assuming you have the correct connector--since it sounds like you're determined to use a Mobile Connector, you'll need to be sure you...

Quality at home charging, are charge ports really needed to be installed at home?

I think the Wall Connector should be the first choice, for all the reasons cited in this thread--but, if (for whatever reason) that's not how the OP decides to go, I agree with having a "permanently" plugged-in connector in the 14-50 outlet. Moreover, I would suggest the "corded" Mobile...

Quality at home charging, are charge ports really needed to be installed at home?

Don't neglect the federal tax credit for installing the EVSE. (The credit for the car itself has sunsetted in Tesla's case.) You'll be doing everything at a 30% discount, so the cost differential isn't as big as it may look at first glance. https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i8911

    Sentry Mode extended use

Super. Thanks for the data point! Ditto! Agreed on the "value" of Sentry (why I'm using it). The electricity costs me nothing (nothing extra, beyond what I'm paying to park), so it's a non-factor in that sense. And, while it's enough to visibly drain the battery to the tune of ~3% / day...

    Sentry Mode extended use

Indeed. But, again, I'm not worried about my car. The primary reason I'm in a paying for the monthly parking (vs the "free" parking my employer provides) is security, and convenience is in the mix, too. With up to 20 trips to the airport monthly, that Uber stops looking economical at all...

    Sentry Mode extended use

Expand, please. I wasn't aware there was a "consumable" finite lifetime re the computers. What form is that? Flash memory, again, or something else? Re the pumps: I'd been under the impression that keeping the charge below approx 77 - 78% kept the pumps off--that's why I charge to 75% in...

    Sentry Mode extended use

Hadn't thought of the flash drive wearing out--good point. That said, those are dirt cheap--and, in my case, it's actually a SD card inside a Raspberry Pi running the teslausb project, with gobs to spare (256GB, I think??). Mild pain to dig it out & swap the card, but no show stopper and...

    Sentry Mode extended use

Not truly a "security" issue (I'm not at all concerned about the garage's security). My thinking is that Sentry may ID the random bit of damage. Uber would be quite expensive to do on any sort of regular basis. I briefly lived in town where I could take the train to the airport--THAT was...

    Sentry Mode extended use

What's the collective wisdom on using Sentry Mode for an extended period of time? When I park at the airport, leaving my car from anywhere from a few hours to a week or more, I have a 20A L1 outlet I plug in to. I don't care at all about the power consumption--understood it's slowing down my...

    What is “normal” vampire drain?

Sentry Mode keeps the whole computer up & running. I see about ~4% / day drain with Sentry running. Still not 25 mi / day, but in the ball park. How about the “overheat protection”? Were you in the sun? If you have that on (“auto,“ maybe?), it will run the climate for up to eight hours (?)...

    Stress crack in rear windshield?

Huh. The part number I was sold (which I was told I needed, as in my previous post), was: CENTER HIGH MOUNTED STOP LIGHT ASSEMBLY (6005917-00-F) I don't have any sort of parts manual to reference. Does that "assembly" include the brackets as separate parts; and can those brackets be ordered...
  18. J

    Stress crack in rear windshield?

Apparently not the case with the Tesla (Model S, at least). The light assembly is glued to the glass. The tech told me that it's very rare to get one off the glass in usable shape (let alone a perfect fit to new glass), and that it's not cost effective to do so anyway (the labor involved...

How to plan a road trip - how long will it take?

What route(s) are you driving? I don’t follow the “why” of your statement….

    Stress crack in rear windshield?

Follow-up question: after being initially quoted ~$770 for replacement of the rear window, I was given a second estimate of ~$930. The difference was explained as $150+tax for a replacement brake light, “which the shop foreman wanted to order just in case it was needed.” There was nothing...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Interesting, thanks. The right (DC) one "almost" looks like CHAdeMO, but not quite; and the left (AC) doesn't look like anything I'm familiar with. Are those some different standards only found in China??

    Stress crack in rear windshield?

Thanks, guys. That's what I thought (initially, at least) about the "star"--but, the bit about "inside" vs "outside" from the previous poster had me wondering. Also, I absolutely have no idea when I could've been hit by something. I assume I would've noticed it if I was driving at the time...

    Stress crack in rear windshield?

Looks like I'm a new member of this club. "Yay"...?? The crack appeared yesterday--so far as I can tell, overnight in my garage. No way to prove that, of course. This question has me wondering: does "inside" or "outside" make a difference in likely cause (thus affecting...

    CCS Adapter for North America

You may have missed the part where I said "as far as I know".... So, we're saying the same thing--this is a distinction without a difference. Sending the "unlatch" from the J-1772 does not (by itself) unlatch the connector. Tesla has programmed the car to follow its own logic. This actually...

    CCS Adapter for North America

Quoting myself (how gauche, right??) to add: Whoops, left out using the mobile app. Also, the OP corrected my interpretation of his issue: the latch will "automatically" open with power off, doors unlocked, & key in range....
  26. J

    CCS Adapter for North America

It "knows" the power has stopped & the communication protocol has been severed when the power is cut, yes. If power stops, the doors are unlocked, AND a key is within range is when the latch releases. Perhaps your issue was with your key being too far away, or blocked, weak battery, etc...?

How to plan a road trip - how long will it take?

Once I got over my range anxiety (only took one leg of the first road trip to do that), I noticed this effect as well: while the overall trip from start to finish may take a bit longer, I arrive MUCH more refreshed having taken multiple short breaks to charge (generally at...

    CCS Adapter for North America

I believe this is the correct, by-design function, no? The J-1772 adapter is a simple pass-through connector, there's no electronic wizardry involved--so there's no way for the EVSE to "talk" to the car beyond the J-1772 standard protocols (which do not, as far as I know, include any sort of...

What would I "lose" if I opt for AP instead of FSD?

I agree that Smart Summon is just a party trick--I've used that exact phrase before, even though I also like to add, "...but it's a pretty darn cool party trick!" :) Summon on the other hand I've actually had to use. Had someone park so $*(^#(@ close to me several weeks ago at the airport...

    map orientation

Closest existing thread I could find for my question: A recent update (I think it corresponds to FSD Beta getting enabled) has moved the orientation button to the upper LEFT part of the screen. No sweat--until I actually have a route entered. When the navigation menu expands to show route...

    Balance without rotate?

Thanks for the replies, but I think you guys are missing my point. I have no problem paying for services received, and I indeed want them to do it properly. If I thought my opinion of what needed doing was better than a professional mechanic employed by Tesla, well, I'd just do it myself. I...

    Balance without rotate?

Just had my car serviced the other day. Nothing specific, just general maintenance, "take care of any recurring or required servicing, inspecting, etc." On the estimate, I was told to expect wheel rotation & balance as part of the work. On the final invoice, it shows in one section, "wheel...

    Direct-wire NEMA 5-20 to J1772?

Nowhere near handy enough to take on this issue (since I clearly don't understand it fully)! Thanks for the info....
  38. J

    Direct-wire NEMA 5-20 to J1772?

Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place--the "very cheap" EVSEs I'm finding are all north of $200. "Cheap" may be subjective, but at that price, I'd just buy the Tesla connector ($215, last I looked?), or use the one I have.
  39. J

    Direct-wire NEMA 5-20 to J1772?

OK, you're saying (I think) the same thing as @BPeter. Is that handshake something difficult to reproduce, i.e., couldn't be built-in to an otherwise simple cable? Yeah, understood on the pigtail being the most vulnerable bit. I'd also just rather have a dedicated cord with no big box hanging...

    Direct-wire NEMA 5-20 to J1772?

So, are you saying then that the magic that's in the Tesla-specific Mobile Connector is also present in the generic L2 public charger to be found around town? That implies to me that it's a standard protocol, no? I assume all such "talking" is really just voltages. How hard would it be to...

    Direct-wire NEMA 5-20 to J1772?

I'm sure I must be missing something, but...: Is there any reason I can't build & use a hard-wired cable with a NEMA 5-20p plug on one end & a J1772 on the other, plugging the 5-20 into a L1 20A source & the J1772 into the Tesla adapter thence the car? AIUI, there's some circuitry involved for...

Dead Battery - How to get into Frunk on 2016+ Model S?

Thanks for the info! A year & a half later, I still haven't found an acceptable solution to this--I've just been accepting the risk. Can you expand on the quoted part, please? I'm not clear on where/how/what it is you removed. What does this metal clip hold, that it has no effect to remove...

Random "Factory Reset" on My Raven S (2020.48.35.5)

"Controls" menu from app partially inop

Just a follow-up from my own issue, in case anyone is just reading this. I finally convinced the local shop to try the remote reset--apparently it has to go to a "higher level," the front-line techs don't have access to this particular item?? In any case, yesterday they performed a remote...

"Controls" menu from app partially inop

Excellent info, thank you! No upgrade to the MCU, I have a 2020. However, I did have the car go into full reboot mode with the bad update that got pushed a while back. I don't recall the sequence of events to know which came first--but, that certainly sounds plausible that the certificates...

Not yet--I had some other unrelated issues I was chasing down with the car, then, since shortly after I posted, I've been away from the car (and it's in an area of spotty/no cell coverage & zero wifi access). I'll re-engage when I get back....

    High Voltage Cables

That potential source of confusion is exactly why there's a distinction between "wire" and "cable." In your example, you have a 3-wire extension cord, which is a cable 25' long.

I'm a dealer and Tesla removed my car's FSD

I would argue that only your last analogy is (somewhat) accurate. In removing the FSD software option, they're not "swapping out" wheels, tires, radios, etc.--they're removing an add-on option altogether. I realize that Tesla does not have a lot of "factory options" on new vehicles, so I'll...
