How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

Incorrect again. Defining the subject of the thread is the opposite of “bickering”. Recall, the OP indicated that among the events that contributed to the creation of this thread was the fact that their PV “stopped” & “reset”. As such, I correctly pointed out that the soc of the PW’s...

How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

use a device like a killawatt meter during outage or flip the breaker & see if the ups start beeping or not...

How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

You didn’t list anything you specifically disagree with.... Also, your belief of the cutoff being “somewhere around 93-97%“ would be incorrect. I have tested with pw soc at 91% and PV was still reset. Unfortunately, Tesla does not allow the user to set the max soc in backup mode—which is...

How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

It sounds like you are in agreement with all my posts. Let me know which part you disagree with, if any.
  5. F

How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

Incorrect. You simply did not comprehend my previous response and now you want to define “blip” to exclude that which I originally referenced. The more relevant question, again, is what is the soc level where the PV will NOT be reset? Anyone? Bueller?
  6. F

How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

Your comprehension of my statement is incorrect. I’ll try to make it easier to comprehend: if house were being fed by PV while PW SOC were relatively low (60-70%) when an outage occurs, the blip would be much less observable because the PV would not have to be reset. Conversely, if the PW SOC...

How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

Incorrect. “Blips” are not seamless in the common definition of the word. Also, the SOC does matter wrt whether the “blip” is observable or not. To wit, if the soc were at 60% and PV producing sufficient power to meet demand from home when the outage occurs, the PV would continue to produce...
  8. F

How come power changeover was not seamless during power outage blip?

Again the word “seamless” is being used incorrectly—that said, if the batteries state of charge is say at 60% & the PV is producing when the outage occurs, the transition SHOULD be “seamless”! The question is what is the % charge that is the cutoff and how does each system determine this “line...

    17kW System = 98.4 kWh Production (5.79kWh/kW of Panels)

15.12kWp system in SoCal installed in 2016, and during the peak periods in June/July we still get 100-107kWh’s per day. Today we just got to 80kWh’s. 4 powerwall 2’s were added last year for full home backup.
  10. F

What's the max generation you've seen for a 16.2kWh system at any given time?

I have a 15.12kWp system and I consistently average 100-107kWh’s per day in June. Located in SoCal. I do have my pool solar heating tubes running behind my solar panels absorbing the heat off the back of them so it appears to make the PV panels run more efficiently during the hot summer months.

New Tesla 15.12kW Solar / 4 Powerwall order in Orlando

~80% of my panels face Southwest; the rest face Southeast. Practically everything is the same as yours except I use LG panels.

New Tesla 15.12kW Solar / 4 Powerwall order in Orlando

interesting! I have an identical size array and I’m averaging mid 80s with clouds and hit 100+ on peak days. Socal location. Weird.

New Tesla 15.12kW Solar / 4 Powerwall order in Orlando

Man that’s ridiculous. I placed my powerwall order in July and was 100% complete a month later.

New Tesla 15.12kW Solar / 4 Powerwall order in Orlando

So far in august I’m averaging 86kWh in SoCal. But I‘ve had better August’s in the past where I had 90-95 on average, with multiple days at 110+. I’d be interested to see if you gain significantly more than you expect with PTO.

New Tesla 15.12kW Solar / 4 Powerwall order in Orlando

FYI my system is practically identical but LG panels were installed in 2016 (paid for themselves over a year ago now) and just added PWs recently. Would be curious to know how many kWs of daily production you are averaging in August.

    New PowerWall install woes

Then why does Tesla default to 65Hz? Also, how can you be 100% certain that when you called in to request the 65Hz be lowered that they didn’t also lower the frequency to 60.5Hz for the outage cycle?

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

2 questions: 1) does your PV production ramp evenly from 100% to 0% as frequency goes from 59.9 to 60.4? Or is the ramp-down uneven? 2) We know that PWs seem to be designed to allow the PV to continue production uninterrupted immediately after an outage provided the PWs are not at 97+%...

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Recall that within your post that I was replying to, you wrote in effect that frequent on/off of the PV is not an issue. My point was that it is not ideal to have the PV continually doing this ON/OFF dance and your response was that it is not something that should happen frequently. In fact, as...

    New PowerWall install woes

I’m not sure that “all modern inverters” cut-off at 60.5Hz. Maybe that’s the discrepancy.

    New PowerWall install woes

perhaps you have previously contacted tesla and asked them to reduce the frequency while others have yet to do so.

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Thanks for admitting being wrong. It helps establish the baseline. I’m curious if the PV production would be REDUCED via the Gateway/PW system immediately following the outage. Perhaps you could throw the breaker during a period when PV is producing closer to peak power (with PWs at 30%) and...

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Just because something is “able” to do something doesn’t mean it is ideal. Well, then you’ll be shocked to know that this was an all day issue as the 8 hour outage caused the PV to go ON & OFF at least 10 Times during the course of the day. Again, it happens. Frequently. Multiple outages in...

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Agreed however we have already had several outages which is why I created this thread. We know the PV is being reset immediately following an outage even with the PWs at low charge—the question is can something be adjusted in the existing system to allow the PVs to run uninterrupted as so many...
  24. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Not sure why you’re focusing on “the first outage” in the video. What about the other outage in the video that clearly shows the PV producing uninterrupted? I’m not an electrical expert either so I think we should refrain from implying that posters like BrettS (and numerous others) are lying...

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

I’m referring to immediately after the outage. scroll up in this thread. Video evidence of outage with PV uninterrupted. Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?
  26. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

There must be a way to eliminate the PV cycling if the energy generated by the PV is able to be 100% absorbed by the PWs + Home Load. I’ve seen videos on this very thread as evidence not to mentioned multiple users’ statements. Based on comments on other threads I may need to adjust the...
  27. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

#1 im not sure it’s ideal to have PV Inverters continually cycling on & off over the duration of a day—I’d guess not. #2 if tesla haven’t adjusted the frequency in the PWs to eliminate the UPS issue, then every time the PV resets the UPS will be BEEPING until the PV resumes production.
  28. F

    New PowerWall install woes

I have 2 SolarEdge 7600s connected to 4 PWs. I notice that when an outage occurs—even with the PWs below 80% charge—the PV resets before resuming production to meet the load from the Home. Typical production is ~12kW and load is ~5kW. Would the frequency adjustment you described above help to...
  29. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Wrt the reduction in frequency, I contacted tesla with the model of my UPS’s a week ago, but there is no way to check to see if they implemented the adjustment. Is it just a matter of trial & error or is there another way to verify? incidentally, what is the likelihood that the reduction in...

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

It appears that the level of charge (loc) in your PowerWalls was below the level considered “high charge” (90%+) when you recorded this. I wonder what would have occurred if the PWs were at 91%+?
  31. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

It seems that the behavior of the Gateway is related to the loc in the PWs relative to the Load from the Home & PV production. Given the above, here’s a scenario: The PV is producing 10kW, the PWs are charged at 50%, and the Home is drawing 5kWs at the moment that an Outage occurs. I would...
  32. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

It appears that your experiences are in direct opposition to each other! BrettS says that in his experience the PV remains in production, whereas Woferry has tested their system and found that the PV “reboots” upon an outage (which is what Tesla is advising). Clearly someone is mistaken, no?
  33. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

So let’s say we amend your scenario slightly so that the House Load were 4kW, and all else equal, would that cause the “go dark” issue you’re describing? Especially given the fact that PWs have a 7kW capability for short periods of time.
  34. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Correction, I believe you meant to write “I believe in all cases, that first swap over with batteries at 100% and PV, would trigger the PV system to shut down.”
  35. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Thank you. That is now Tesla’s official position on the matter. Funny thing is when PW were first introduced, they were described as allowing your PV to continue producing uninterrupted thru an outage. I wonder if most customers realize that their PV systems will ALWAYS Turn Off immediately...
  36. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Thank you, but I think your statements are contradictory. Recall the question is in essence, “is there any scenario in which the PV will remain running immediately after an outage?” Your answers: “this is based entirely on the state of charge of the powerwalls.” “When you are off grid (and...
  37. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Are we talking under 5 seconds? Under 10 seconds? I’m curious why it would take so long to shut off the PV and power back on the PWs alone?

Wow! That is not something anyone on this thread has posted. How long does this last (“go dark”)?
  40. F

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

To be clear, are you 100% certain that IF the demand for Power from the home exceeds that being produced by the PV at time of outage the PV will still shut down in backup mode? This seems completely counterintuitive! Afterall, if the home is demanding power why wouldn’t the solar continue to...

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Thanks so much for the feedback. A couple more questions: A) It sounds like there may be a slightly longer “cutover” when in Backup mode vs Self-powered. If so, and assuming there were a Scheduled Outage by the utility starting in the morning (~8am) and ending in the late afternoon (~5pm)...

Powerwall 2 - Outage “Switchover” Delays?

Due to multiple & frequent outages in my area, I decided to go with powerwall 2’s. Part of this decision vs a gas generator was due to the fact that I was promised that when the power from the utility was cut off (outage) the powerwall 2’s would kick-in within a few milliseconds and maintain my...

Wall Charger what amp for breaker

Thanks for the response. Dumb question: how is it that the supercharger allows for faster and faster charging on the newest models (i.e. model 3 vs older model S) yet posters keep stating that the onboard chargers inside the cars are getting lowered?
  45. F

Wall Charger what amp for breaker

What makes you certain that Tesla will not change? Wasn’t the older High Power Wall charger that was compatible with Model S at up to ~70+Amps made by Tesla?
  46. F

Wall Charger what amp for breaker

Might be OT but given the knowledgeable posters here I thought it’s worth a shot: if designing a circuit from scratch, is it worth using two (2) 100A dedicated circuits for 2 home charging stations (i.e. 100A for each charger, at 80% = 80A continuous)? Does Tesla even have a device that could...

gateway 2 rolling out in US yet?

To be clear, adding a non backup panel and running a feeder cable from gateway to the generation disconnect and taps to the house panels is acceptable by inspectors even though you have the possibility of overloading the gateway?

Yes, and I asked if this setup (ONE gateway) would be problematic passing inspection, and you answered, “nope”. Perhaps inspectors in TX are lax?

Then why are you doing it if it’s not acceptable?
