    Accelerating when braking?

I hope you’re joking. Driving with both feet is a terrible idea. Activating the wrong side of your body is generally more likely than a positional error in placement of your extremity. Consider wrong-letter typos. How often do you see, say, l/s errors vs. say, h/j errors? Unless you’re a...

    FSD free trial… I’m convinced

Fair enough. I was thinking in terms of formatting and organization, and how often the unchangeable default is something I can’t imagine anyone would want. But yeah the math’s gotta be right! Maybe I should have used PowerPoint as my example. My estimate of MTBC* for some products: Excel: 10...

    FSD free trial… I’m convinced

Car is in my sig. Cameras were fine. 2000 miles of driving is plenty of time for them to calibrate. What kind of problem could there be that would affect EAP but not normal AP? And the merge lane thing was not phantom braking; it never happened when there was a merge lane with no cars entering...

    FSD free trial… I’m convinced

Convinced that it was insane to send it out to everyone in its current state that is. I got my trial just in time for my 2000 mile round-trip to see the eclipse (MD to MO, mostly I-81 and I-40). 1. It’s 99.9% there. And while I would be ecstatic if, say Excel were 99.9% correct, for something...

    Tesla Y Frunk Luggage

Nice! I’ve been using a $15 (non-waterproof) duffel in the frunk, but I like the idea of a slightly larger one in the subtrunk. Haven’t needed it to be waterproof yet, but I’m bookmarking yours in case that changes.

I had no idea the efficient fell off a cliff when it's raining!

Because you lose regen braking (not such a big deal now that you can turn on automatic blended braking, but still), and unless your trip is all on that first charge, or there are only V2 chargers along the route*, it makes almost no difference in the total trip time. On a V3 charger, the time...

Yeah, I stopped reading CleanTechnica a couple years ago when I couldn’t take the sloppiness. It’s bad enough when my local paper doesn’t understand the difference between power and energy, but when a site dedicated to renewables and EVs keeps making that mistake it’s a bad sign for the quality...

Las Vegas to Grand Canyon - ABRP vs Tesla Trip Planner

If your first charge is only 64 miles from the start, you are correct in supposing that there's no reason to start at more than your usual 80%. I really don't understand why ABRP is routing you to Flagstaff, unless it knows what I know: Flagstaff has so much stuff you want to see that you...

    When to Replace 12v?

For safety reasons (and probably regulatory too), the HV battery has to be isolated when the car is "off". Which means you need a power source to run whatever mechanism connects it to the rest of the system (a high-current switch of one type or another). OTOH, it's not like there's no...

Another Tesla Y owner opened mine with his phone

The problem is when GPS fails it can fail pretty badly. Like in much of lower Manhattan (and other skyscrapery cities), there's so much multipath from all the buildings that GPS will regularly put you 100 feet from your actual position. Also, inside parking garages is not good for GPS...

Another Tesla Y owner opened mine with his phone

This! It's important to understand that "Bluetooth range" is not a thing. (To be pedantic, I'm fairly sure Tesla doesn't even use "Bluetooth", it uses "Bluetooth Low Energy", which is different, although it uses the same frequency range.) Bluetooth and BLE operate at ~2.4 GHz, which has a...

    Most efficientbsetting for heat pump?

It almost certainly depends on outdoor temperature and humidity, cabin temperature setting, and probably some other factors. Also, I would be very surprised if you can make any significant difference in efficiency by changing the fan speed. Like, with very careful measurements over the course of...

    Accelerating when braking?

Sorry, I meant a link to a study, not a link to a law firm's "Hire us; we got a jury to award millions to our clients!" page. "We recreated the issue on a dynamometer" is not convincing to me. Which is why I'm quite certain I would not have survived voir dire if I'd been in the pool. There must...

    Accelerating when braking?

You're gonna need to back that up with a citation. The NHTSA/NASA report about Toyota's unintended acceleration rather cleverly proved that the problem could not have been in the engine controller. Meanwhile pedal entrapment by floor mats was a known issue. Which only further amplifies the...

Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA - Bernard Dr. (LIVE, 56 V3 stalls)

Not quite sure what you're asking, but there are two differences here, which are important to keep separate: The difference between power measured at the pedestal and power into the car (which is what I calculated above to be a fraction of a percent) The difference between power into the car...

Supercharger - Kettleman City, CA - Bernard Dr. (LIVE, 56 V3 stalls)

Given that the cables are a known length and diameter, and (for v3) temperature, it's trivial to calculate the losses in the cable. But more to the point, even at 250 kW, assuming 380 V you need 650 A, which in 10 feet of 0AWG cable (I'm guessing, but that's probably about right) is a round trip...

Can you install a wall connector horizontally?

I'm seeing an awful lot of "seems fine" in this thread, with no references to the installation manual. If it relies on natural convection for cooling, it may need to be installed vertically or risk overheating and shortening its life. If that's true I'm sure the manual will specify.

    When to Replace 12v?

If you read the thread, you'll see that the answer is "it doesn't". There were significant numbers of problems in the past, but recently it seems much more rare. You're comparing your experience (a single data point) with everyone who has posted about having a problem with their Tesla. There...

    When to Replace 12v?

I do check the charger pack. I don't bother with the A23; it's alkaline so I expect it to last 10 years. The pack also claims 98% SoC after sitting for a year, although I have my doubts about the accuracy with essentially no drain, so I charge it once a year.

    When to Replace 12v?

I believe the wires in that panel are diode-connected to just the frunk. Apply power, frunk opens. In any case, I've tucked a small A23 12V alkaline in a holder in there and I keep a lithium jump-start pack in the frunk. Never had to use it, and I don't even know if the A23 battery has enough...

Any 16V compatible portable power stations?

A "12V" car electrical system can be nearly 15 V while charging, so anything that plugs into "12V" has to be able to handle a range of voltages to start with. The peak voltage on the 16 V system is probably something like 19 V. Power stations regulate the voltage to their batteries and their own...

Not even to mention, 3 hours? Unless you live in Montana or somewhere like that with high speed limits and no traffic, a MYLR can do a three hour drive without recharging easy, even starting at 90%. But yeah, this type of response is so obviously an excuse for being terrified of anything new...

You do still need to replace the brake fluid on the Tesla every few years. But you're correct about the coolant; EV...

My Two Week Review - Heading towards 300,000 Miles

The watts/mile is not closely related to tire consumption, I think. W/mi is mainly how fast you drive; tread wear is how fast you accelerate and stop, and how fast you go around corners. You can wear out tires fast just by driving around town without raising your average energy use very much...

I would recommend only charging to 95% or even 90% for your long trips. That extra Supercharging is what, an extra dollar and a half? And the extra time is negligible because the charging happens at a low state of charge where it charges really fast. You can use A Better Route Planner to check...

Is this okay to drive on?

I can't actually tell what you're trying to say here, since I'm not evaluating any experts; I'm evaluating safety regs. Truck tires work the same way as car tires, only with higher pressure and more miles per year. And the safety regulations are tighter. So yes, if a car tire is damaged in a way...

You do realize that the same roads you drive on also contain Peterbilt trucks, right? If they're regularly driving around on dangerous tires you're in every bit as much danger as if you are.

Cold Feet: Reassurance or Reality - Tesla MYLR as a Road Warrior Vehicle?

That's only necessary if you need to arrive home below 10% charge and leave again in less than 9 hours. If not, then the 32 A mobile charger is all you need. (Well, and a place to plug it in, which only needs to be a 40 A circuit, although generally people install a 14-50 outlet on a 50 A circuit.)

I think your estimates of how much you'll need to charge are right on. And I suspect you'll enjoy shorter legs with short stops. I find I'm substantially less beat at the end of a long drive than I was in any of my ICE cars. Don't know how much is stopping more often, how much is the...

The original poster didn't say explicitly, but based on their responses, it's safe to say they can charge at home. Given that, most of their charging will take 3 seconds. That's way faster than filling with gas.

I don't drive anywhere near that much, but this is almost certainly fine. For a 300 mile trip, if you charge to 90% before you start (with an L2 charger like in your garage), you can get most of the way to where you're going, and charge at the last Supercharger along your route for just long...

I don't think that's what that chart shows. It's all the ones currently in a given state, not how long each one was in that state, right? I would not be surprised if the soft costs of a typical installation (location acquisition, permits, utility connections, etc.) are large enough that an 8-stall station is less than 50% more than a 4-stall in total cost. So why take the chance you'll have to go through it all again to expand to...
